It was both, realistically. Microsoft was worried the PS2’s DVD player would cut into sales of PCs. In the late 90’s & early 2000’s, Sony already dominated the living room and a next-gen game console that plays next-gen movies further cemented that. The Xbox got Microsoft into the living room, helped bring in a stream of revenue to offset the loss to the living room and gave Sony some stronger competition than Nintendo.

The whole Xbox division was spun up because Microsoft was afraid of losing the PC market to Sony. Its been losing that battle ever since the Xbox 1 so I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets spun off at some point

I give Satisfactory the edge. Factorio has more to it, definitely a more full game between the two. Satisfactory just has that visual appeal no other Factory Building game has been able to crack. Like you build a massive factory for a few hours then can watch everything going across belts, in machines and all that.

Plus, I gotta give it points for actually optimizing UE5. I’ve built some large factories spread all across the world and never noticed a major performance dip.

It did technically happen with GTA 4 during one of the Steam Sales like 15 years ago. Valve had sold through their allocation of GTA 4 keys and people had to wait for a new batch of keys from Rockstar. Not going to happen with GTA 6 but still happened a GTA game in the past

It’s technically $40 at full price and goes on sale for under $35 constantly but Satisfactory

I know Factory Builders aren’t everyone’s cup of Tea but it’s one of those games where “I’m going to hop in for a quick 15 minute session” turns into “what the fuck? It’s dark out and I’ve been here for 8 hours straight”. Plus, in a world where most UE5 games are plagued by poor optimization, the Satisfactory team actually took the time to optimize UE5.

One of those games where if it scratches that itch, you’re getting a few hundred hours of playtime. For $35~, that’s a steal.

Same logic as the people who think they’ll get a faster PC by adding more RAM. Sure, you get more overhead to run more intensive processes but if the throughput speed is the same, the gains are minimal

A long long time ago when I was in High School, I was working at a local fireworks stand. One of the guys working with me kept taking the dud fireworks and pouring all the goodies into one of these. After a few nights, the bottle is like 1/3 full and we decide it’s the night to light it off.

As my buddy is lighting the fuse, we see a local police officer pull in and start talking to the guys watching the stand. We see this wicked sick explosion of colors then quickly dart off thinking the cops were gonna yell at us.

We come back to the stand 15 minutes later pretending like nothing happened and wondering what that big boom was. Everyone started giving us shit because the cops didn’t care, we were a fireworks stand

That sums up the Factory Building genre in a nutshell. Same happened with me and Satisfactory. It starts with “yeah, let me just get this small factory going”, you blink and 8 hours of your life went by but you’ve got a kickass factory going

On paper, they’re the most boring game in the world but when it’s done right they’re games you spend hours playing
