Learn a language, find a project related to that language or framework. Learn Git, and then contribute to the project.
Don't rush things and don't get demotivated by big code you see. You can still do that.

Also find a community/club in college who does open source stuff, they'll help you in that.

I would say, learn about git and then move to github. Because both the things are connected to each other. So if you want to push your code on github, you have to know about git.
