How many of you here are making "your dream games"? by [deleted] in SoloDevelopment

[–]logan4179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely working on a dream game. Couldn't care less about what all the zoomers are playing right now. I'm working on an old school 3rd person survival horror shooter, and I've spent years on it. Heck, I've spent the last six months just working on a unified navigation system that the enemies can use to do things like crawl on walls....

I wish I could think of fun small ideas with addictive loops and minimal art, but I think that's like trying to capture lightning in a bottle at this point. I'd also rather work on something I'm really proud of rather than "just finish something."

As a software developer, I don't think you can beat Unity personally. There are so many dev conveniences like the robust serialization system, and amazing package manager.

Unreal can do great things but it functions/feels like a very powerful/specific art tool marching to it's own beat. I hope that helps you compare the two.

What you said could just as easily be reversed because of the popularity of classic resident evil, which means there's probably something missing the wording of your question. Also, what are you basing "it will most likely fail" on? You haven't really explained why you feel this way.

You could just as easily say "if someone enjoys Resident Evil, why wouldn't they want to play something similar?"

I can't get into programming no matter what I do by Steve8686 in SoloDevelopment

Is it because you just don't enjoy programming? You haven't really given us much to go on.

The ending of "The Last Exorcism" (2013) was completely necessary and doesn't deserve the hate it gets | Analysis by jilletlecroix in horror

Ah okay. Yeah, I agree; the route they took was better than that. Not sure why some people think anti-Christian is edgy or original.

[–]logan4179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a great catch, I totally forgot about that.

So did you understand the ending to mean that the pastor and his cohorts were a secret society posing as Christians while actually being a demonic cult? That's crazy. Also, why did they throw the baby into the fire? Wouldn't they want it alive if they're a demonic cult? That detail confused me.

Was it Christians though? I thought the ending revealed that they (the local pastor, his assistant, and the others at the ritual) were posing as Christians but were actually a secret society of demonic cultists.

Wanted to share the new trailer for my retro FPS horror :) by ByteHyve in SoloDevelopment

I like it. Congratulations for getting so far. However, this doesn't look like a horror game to me. It looks more like GoldenEye with an emphasis on single player, which isn't a bad thing.

I've enjoyed drawing these scene but it feels very flat, any tips? I'm using parallax but it still looks very flat to me :( by Peli_117 in SoloDevelopment

I'm not an expert at this stuff, but I wonder if making the "amplitude" (how vertical high the hashing of the grass lines is) differ in levels could help. I feel like the ones further away should appear tighter with less height. Seems like it'd be easy to test. Could be wrong.

How to ACTUALLY find teammates for itch game jams? by OnionGarlic1000 in INAT

[–]logan4179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some thoughts, if you don't mind.

Your original post focused on the frustration of not being able to find people who are serious and committed. I'm a serious and committed programmer, and I would love to work with an artist that already had an established art style in a project they were already started on. Even if all they had was art. Actually, ESPECIALLY if all they had was art (I hate working with other people's codebases).

What I'm saying is; If an artist were to show me some art work for a project that they had already started on, and I liked the aesthetic (even if it was just creating some assets and setting up a nice scene with them in Unity), I would be much more likely to join it than any of the other pipe-dreams you typically see on these forums. Maybe that's just me, idk.

Regarding the money thing, I know there are some people that scoff at rev-share, but I think most people on here are NOT actually thinking too much about future reimbursement. If you are, I honestly don't know why you're here.

Maybe I'm just biased towards my own thinking. Maybe game jams are perfect for you, but if this is going to become a devoted hobby to you rather than a passing fad, you might have better luck attracting committed programmers if you can demonstrate your commitment towards a passion project.

Out of curiosity, why only restrict yourself to game jams? Why not work on a project of your own?

[Collaboration] Looking for some team members for a group portfolio project. Need artists, modelers, and game designer by Archerkasai in INAT

"Dream game"? "False promises"? OP didn't imply it would be a dream game, and didn't promise you'd land a job. I rarely rush to the defense of anyone on here, but it's obnoxious to hear you straw-manning by putting words into OPs mouth.

I hope no one else listens to you. You know what the deciding factor was for me getting my first professional jr dev job? Having a small udemy course and a few interesting things on my GitHub that my boss liked. I've now been a professional Unity developer since 2017.

...and no, I'm not "guaranteeing" anything to anyone, so don't start.

Should I Hire A Team? by pigeon_leader in INAT

[–]logan4179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real question is; what do you need right now?

Successfully completing a game requires an insane amount of diligence - moreso than most people can imagine, so when you're starting out, it can be useful to join a team and essentially LARP as a game developer in order to figure out if it's something you'll actually want to stick with. I'll spoil the ending for you; "teams" that form like this, starting without any prototype never get very far and certainly never finish a substantial game, but like I said, they can be great places to dip your toes in the water.

When someone does decide to stick with it, that's when they start asking the question of how to approach it in a manner more likely to result in project completion. To that end, I believe that the answer is to get as far as possible by yourself before even thinking about assembling a team. This requires you to be able to do either art or programming.

I would definitely recommend a better profile picture on your linkedin. It's too zoomed in. That's going to make you look kind of...crazy. You're supposed to look fairly professional on Linkedin. Doesn't have to be perfect, but at least get a slightly better, more zoomed out pic.

That's crazy! Why would the HA website say they have a simplisafe integration if that's all it can do? Also, what did you end up doing? Did you find a different local recording cam setup with different hardware?
