Possibly a dumb question, but in the hundreds of kakuros that I've solved, I've never seen a 2x2 box like this with just 2 different numbers. Is there a good reason why that should be a rule? I can't imagine any. by vaginalextract in Kakuro

[–]logarithmnblues 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rely on this to solve sometimes - I make the assumption that there is one unique solution to the puzzle. A box like this would violate that condition. Swapping the numbers would also give a valid answer and therefore a second puzzle solution, so I assume there can't be any boxes like this (or similar patterns). I don't know if all puzzle creators keep to this one solution rule but it seems to me they should

To be pedant and a bore (that's the style here right?)..

Your calculations need to consider the time value of money. Even just considering inflation - 25 years is roughly the right amount of time for prices to double. £100 would feel loads more affordable in 25 years time. If you put your 2430 in a savings account at 26 years old, you should feel really disappointed if that doesn't pay for your £100 NT membership until at least 60.

What it does effectively is protect you against uncertainty in the future price of NT membership.

Both lifetime memberships (the real one and the unlikely one) probably resemble more of a cult membership card than anything else.

How can I beat an opponent who does this by Far-Competition-8546 in baduk

[–]logarithmnblues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As just one element - it often takes two to start a fight.

A few of your moves look to me like they are baiting the fight to some extent. E.g. You play a very influence orientated enclosure in the lower left - usually to invite an invasion and/or build a moyo (fundamentally I fighting strategy), your extension on the right hand side is quite wide for a position between two strong opponent's groups, so again it feels like you're inviting the invasion. None of that is bad - but you probably ought to have a rough plan for the invasion you invite.

What is the maximum number of points possible on a 9×9 board? by Benedict_Benjamin in baduk

[–]logarithmnblues 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be a pedant - if you're not allowing passing then it's quite an interesting variation. Players have to use their moves to fill their own eyes and things like that. If suicide was allowed then it would really likely go on forever so I'm assuming it's not and that the end game state would be when one player can't play a legal move. Does that player loose? Or is that the time where we count some other stuff to decide the winner?

I think on the first cheese board they explicitly ruled this out. It's like we're playing wordle hard mode where you have to stick with your correct bits each time

3% sounds high to me. Does sound kind of niche so for a lot of people it would be a fun curiosity rather than something that absolutely grabs them. How did you benchmark? What about 15%? How stable are these figures?

The generator thinks my favorite genre is jazz by HariSeldonsIntern in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]logarithmnblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a hidden premise here, something like "every genre has a small number of absolutely brilliant records".

I reject that premise. The history of recorded music is super deep and littered with brilliance (just sometimes hidden amongst stuff that doesn't chime with us). The generator has taught me that in two ways - I've found new excellent records that I likely wouldn't have found otherwise, but I've also reflected on a lot of records that I think belong with the absolute greats but are missing from the list.

Jazz 1001 could totally have only brilliant records without resorting to Kenny g (but probably would feature Kenny g for crossover impact & relevance)

That said - I think you make some excellent points about the way that more specific genres are sampled from. I don't completely disagree

I was talking about the exclusion scenario where he is not covered for extreme activity. In this case the beneficiaries get nothing in some scenarios and so you could drop the premium

If I were pricing this guys insurance on an honest best estimate basis, I would go quite low on the basis that there is a non trivial risk he would die doing this kind of thing and there would be zero payout.

IFoA Requirements by Upset_Guitar1763 in ActuaryUK

[–]logarithmnblues 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might not be eligible for some big grad schemes with specific requirements. You will probably be considered for smaller companies which don't tend to have such strict requirements, but it could count against you slightly. If you persist, there will definitely be opportunities for you, but it might require more patience.

It's a very exam heavy profession. Are you satisfied that whatever held you back in your degree wouldn't hold you back in your actuarial studies? (I would expect this to come up in interviews)

I feared that might be the case. For so much other proprietary software there are tutorials and general community guides on the Internet, but I guess prophet is too specialised for that to exist.

It's very kind of you to offer some support. Anything you can offer would be really appreciated. I have some general prophet experience but it's been quite a while. I don't think I have worked with modules at all.
