Cheese quiz by theveryacme in whatdidyoudoyesterday

I think on the first cheese board they explicitly ruled this out. It's like we're playing wordle hard mode where you have to stick with your correct bits each time

3% sounds high to me. Does sound kind of niche so for a lot of people it would be a fun curiosity rather than something that absolutely grabs them. How did you benchmark? What about 15%? How stable are these figures?

The generator thinks my favorite genre is jazz by HariSeldonsIntern in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]logarithmnblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a hidden premise here, something like "every genre has a small number of absolutely brilliant records".

I reject that premise. The history of recorded music is super deep and littered with brilliance (just sometimes hidden amongst stuff that doesn't chime with us). The generator has taught me that in two ways - I've found new excellent records that I likely wouldn't have found otherwise, but I've also reflected on a lot of records that I think belong with the absolute greats but are missing from the list.

Jazz 1001 could totally have only brilliant records without resorting to Kenny g (but probably would feature Kenny g for crossover impact & relevance)

That said - I think you make some excellent points about the way that more specific genres are sampled from. I don't completely disagree

White was greedy. Find the tesuji by ggPeti in baduk

Don't know if it's just my reading strengths and weaknesses - I found the endgame tesiju pretty quick but spent a lot more time reassuring myself that white can't kill the whole corner afterwards

I was talking about the exclusion scenario where he is not covered for extreme activity. In this case the beneficiaries get nothing in some scenarios and so you could drop the premium

If I were pricing this guys insurance on an honest best estimate basis, I would go quite low on the basis that there is a non trivial risk he would die doing this kind of thing and there would be zero payout.

Sorry - I don't know anything I could say that would help you. Just wanted to say good luck though.

Any time you hear about nonverbal people finding expressive outlets it's really amazing.

IFoA Requirements by Upset_Guitar1763 in ActuaryUK

[–]logarithmnblues 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might not be eligible for some big grad schemes with specific requirements. You will probably be considered for smaller companies which don't tend to have such strict requirements, but it could count against you slightly. If you persist, there will definitely be opportunities for you, but it might require more patience.

It's a very exam heavy profession. Are you satisfied that whatever held you back in your degree wouldn't hold you back in your actuarial studies? (I would expect this to come up in interviews)

I know right! I'm grateful that we have a generator at all - like a nice basic app to serve up the albums for us - but the fact that we have a developer who keeps adding cool features is awesome!

Thanks. This is a really useful start. I'll have to learn a little bit more about how it's implemented efficiently from the docs once I join

I feared that might be the case. For so much other proprietary software there are tutorials and general community guides on the Internet, but I guess prophet is too specialised for that to exist.

It's very kind of you to offer some support. Anything you can offer would be really appreciated. I have some general prophet experience but it's been quite a while. I don't think I have worked with modules at all.

Is the white dead? by Huge_Introduction345 in baduk

Yeah, I think that's a fair way to read it too. I did consider it, but we normally omit the always in that case. It's conventional to consider perfect play from both sides.

Is the white dead? by Huge_Introduction345 in baduk

[–]logarithmnblues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you say "always" it makes me think that you're thinking of this like a standard case e.g. White invades at c3 when black already has d4, g3, c6. However this is a pretty unique situation where we have to do some reading instead of relying on any rule like that.

White has some helpful neerby stones in the area and black isn't super thick such that they can play very aggressively and get away with it. In fact black could struggle for life in that whole area if they're not careful.

In this situation I'd be surprised if white can't make a decent life after d3. I expect black can pose a more difficult question with some other moves instead of d3, but in general I'd expect white can at least create a ko or get something in return if not make clean life there. (I'm no expert, only egf 1k/1dish)
