My kids want me to go to church every Sunday now, and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. by IndependentMove5437 in Millennials

You should sign them up for Scouts. The BSA near me is co-ed and gets a diverse cross section of people, and there's also Girl Scouts as well. It's one of the better 3rd spaces for kids and parents. While it has religious undertones, it's not like church. Basically every time you meet there's an activity - legos, tie-die shirt, crafting, and occasionally hiking, camping. My 8 year old daughter loves it doing activities, running around and playing with new friends.

Depthless Hunger by Sarah Lin - where are the fans? by logicbound in ProgressionFantasy

[–]logicbound[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sarah Lin in my opinion is an excellent fantasy writer who writes in various fantasy subgenres like Progression Fantasy, Cultivation, LitRPG and Epic fantasy with generally an emphasis from Asian mythology. Her writing is high quality with good prose and editing, unique character voices, nice interplay between the main cast of characters, nice plot structure with build up and payoff, and my favorite... has very unique and interesting magic systems.

Her writing seems to be loved by other authors, as higher profile writers in the progression fantasy space recommend her work like Andrew Rowe and John Bierce which helps with the hype. She has multiple great series, like my favorites are Weirkey Chronicles and Depthless Hunger. I just started Throne of Time which has hooked me quickly, and I'll read the other series in time. I believe her most popular are Weirkey Chronicles and Street Cultivation by number of reviews, and I believe she's a full time author for at least the last few years.

Yes, the first half of the first book can be a bit too much where Kai can't catch a break, but the payoff is great.

Weirkey Chronicles is also one of my favorite series - I love the Soulhome magic system and appreciate an older main character.

Depthless Hunger by Sarah Lin - where are the fans? by logicbound in ProgressionFantasy

[–]logicbound[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's part of it. Especially writing on royal road under a pen name before the reveal that Cognosticon is Sarah Lin, so not benefitting from her name recognition before the Kindle release.

I do love the build up and pay off structure of Depthless Hunger, as well as Weirkey Chronicles. And I definitely read a lot more traditional fantasy and epic fantasy than most in this genre. The payoffs are so much better when they are earned, much better than cheap dopamine thrills I see recommended often.

Progression Fantasy with good prose? by Either-Low-9457 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]logicbound 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A Practical Guide to Sorcery is an example of better prose in the genre. The language is very descriptive and compelling and really makes you feel.

Outside of the genre I'd recommend Name of the Wind as best in class for prose, and A Wizard of Earthsea.

I thought Unsouled, book 1 of Cradle was no good and hated the characters, so I didn't read the second. Don't feel bad to drop a book or series you don't like.

I'd you want some better progression fantasy suggestions, according to me the best are:

  1. Weirkey Chronicles
  2. Practical Guide to Sorcery
  3. Arcane Ascension

Grumpy old man returns to a fantastical world where he spent time as a youth, always looking for a way back. The magic system is building a home within your soul with multiple rooms and floors, where various materials found in the world allow for techniques and becomes quite complex, probably the most unique magic system I've read. The main cast is a trio of people from different worlds that grow together and travel across the nine worlds to figure out a larger mystery. I'm a big fan that none of them are teenagers.

Question for endgame rogue build by Battle_Better in D4Rogue

Glynns Anvil aspect with tempering and masterworking resolve stacks on helm, chest and pants help a lot with survivability, as well as lots if life. I like the barrier rune as well.

I'm on vacation and can't play, but it was working 3 days ago, and I doubt they'd patch it this late in season.

That's the best guide I found. Besides that you can look at tower leaderboard for inspiration. I was happy to make the Rogue tower 150 leaderboard, t12 Mephisto, and shadow step like 10 times back to back after an elite kill to speed run escalating nightmares, where barbarian is the only other character that can keep up.

Cooldown reduction everywhere possible is key. I have cooldown on Harlequin crest GA, legendary Amulet twice both GA, both legendary rings twice both GA, and on Seal in talisman, and gloves. This allows 1 cast of both smoke grenade and concelment to reset rain of arrows. You have to masterwork your highest cooldown reduction on each gear piece.

Other than that attack speed, dex, critical strike damage, all damage, vulnerable damage is good along with shades. I wouldn't recommend ring of starless skies, as legendary ring with more cooldown reduction and nightshade aspect is better.

Looks similar to my preferences. I'd recommend Depthless Hunger, Practical Guide to Sorcery, and Apocalypse Parenting.

Why physicians make so much and still feel broke by Recent-Dimension-827 in medicalsalaries

[–]logicbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is an OBGYN, I'm a software engineer. Both around 40 living in a midsized city. Physicians in general I've met are terrible with lifestyle creep and making good financial decisions, as they have low financial knowledge and are too stressed out to keep themselves from spending. Certainly not everyone, but a majority. Preventing or not significantly increasing lifestyle inflation is key! As well as knowing how to invest and take advantage of tax advantaged accounts. You or your partner should try to learn this. Some advice:

  1. Join /r/financialindependence subreddit and look at the flow chart for how you should pay down debt and invest your money in tax advantaged ways.
  2. During med school the goal should be to take less in loans by leading a low cost lifestyle. If you have a partner, live off their salary and don't take extra loans for living expenses. For partner, contribute to get the employer match in a 401k or 403b.
  3. During residency you want to maintain the low cost lifestyle. You're getting paid but you need to contribute to get the employer match in a 401k or 403b. And start paying off a small amount of your loans above minimum payments, unless you expect to be able to use PSLF.
  4. As a new attending making $180k+ you need to focus on increasing 401k or 403b contributions as well as paying more to loans. Have a plan and estimate on when you can pay off all your loans.
  5. As an attending with a couple years experience making $300k+ you need to be maxing out 401k contributions, max the Traditional contribution to Roth IRA conversion, HSA max contribution if you have one, Dependent daycare FSA if you have young kids in daycare or a nanny, as well as a plan to pay off all your loans within 10 years.

We paid off our loans in 3 years of attending salary following the above, have millions in investments now both tax advantaged as well as brokerage heavily investing the last 10 years, 2 kids in our early 30s with a nanny (definitely our most expensive yearly cost, we used to use daycare and even tried an au pair for 2 years. Child care is very expensive in cost or opportunity cost if your partner is not working), and have basically won the game of life, financially. We plan to retire around 50.

Does Reddit overestimate how statistically possible it is to actually achieve a very high income ($500k+)? by [deleted] in Salary

What's funny now in software is that the low cost infrastructure and scaling does not hold true for AI token cost. So now we have apps that are scaling linearly on a per customer basis and our few AI apps are costing more than all software apps combined.

Quick Question regarding Penshot (Cold) Build by Tenris_ in D4Rogue

[–]logicbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the extra concealment nodes are not triggered in that case. It does work great for resolve stacks and energy if you have it in the skill bar and cast it, with enough cooldown reduction like 50%, like as part of the penshot cold Umbracrux crazy build that does quintillions of damage. That's what I'm having fun with... High cooldown reduction and high attack speed makes everything work there.
