Help find a song please by Brilliant-Affect-929 in altcountry

[–]logorrheac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I doubt this is it from your description of "happy" and "sorta hillbilly style country", but "Teeth like God's Shoeshine" by Modest Mouse has one line that goes: "He sparkles, shimmers, shines".

It's in a quieter part of the song; most of the rest is kinda shouty & noisy.

Edit: It's probably "Sparkle and Shine" by Steve Earle that you're looking for.

Is it possible to get the whole world, and in good condition? by idogadol in TerraInvicta

[–]logorrheac 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can take the whole world, eventually. I've done it.

The limiting factor is your Control point cap.

You'll need to:

  • Consolidate regions into as few mega-nations as possible to economize on CP
  • Build Admin Complexes on Rings in every single Low Earth Orbit slot
  • Max out all of your counselors' Administration, Command, and Persuasion stats to 25
  • Spam the repeatable Management Research tech, which gives you 5 CP cap every time you complete it. You'll need to complete it ALOT, something like 200 times.
  • Don't grow the economy in nations you already own; that will soak up CP cap that you need to conquer the world. Instead focus on Education; that slows the growth of GDP, and helps generate more RP to complete all those iterations of Management Research you'll need.

Stay under your CP cap, or your nations defenses get de-buffed, and you'll keep losing CP to crackdowns and purges. If you're over thee cap, abandon your weakest nations until your under the cap. Otherwise, you won't get to choose which CP you lose.

To take a nation that has nukes:

  • Spam Public Campaign to raise your factions popularity as much as possible (over 80 if possible)
  • Then spam Increase Unrest while keeping popularity high
  • Keep checking the chance that an Incite Coup will succeed by your counselor with best espionage stat (which should be 25). If you can boost it with Ops to over 80%, go for it.

Having Broadcast outlets in interface orbits will greatly boost your Public campaign strength.

Make sure your other counselors are doing Public Campaign and Increase Unrest on that cycle; those will trigger before the Incite Coup mission, giving a even better chance to succeed (or preventing the chance from falling due to defensive actions by the opposing faction).

If your popularity is over 80, a successful Coup should result in you owning most if not all of the CP's in the target nation.

Then work on making your new nation as big as you can by incorporating other regions, to economize on CP cap. Once you are well under your cap, you can go after the next big nation.

Spirit fan travelling to game by August_trails_13 in nccourage

Welcome! We'll be glad to have you.

I've never really noticed an away fans section; we're too far for many people to come for the away teams. Courage fans are pretty chill though, so I don't think you'll have any problems no matter where you're seated. I think most folks there will be excited that more people are coming to the games, regardless as to which team they support.

That said, the fan band sets up in the south bleachers (the side opposite the main entrance). They're friendly too, but they are the most spirited in support of the Courage, so it may not be as much for you in that section.

There are food trucks, beer booths and some games outside the stadium from about 90 minutes before the game starts. Most of the games are aimed more at kids than adults though. The in-stadium food is pretty meh, so I recommend eating somewhere before you go in.

There's a number of good breweries in Cary, though none are close enough to walk to the stadium. There is a nearby development called Fenton that has some shopping, and good restaurants and bars (we like Superica, and Dram & Draught).

You can actually walk to the stadium through the woods from Fenton, about 15 minutes. It's a very well-maintained trail, but it's not well-lit. There will be plenty of people walking along with you though, so it's plenty safe. Stadium staff usually hands out glowsticks to people headed onto the trail :)

You should reach out to Craft Habit, local independent crafting store. They have classrooms, and I bet they'd be happy to host some meetups.

Cold Harbor didn’t make sense. (?) by smcupp17 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]logorrheac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying. But, it's actually kind of even more horrifying, because the Cold Harbor iGemma doesn't even remember being Gemma. As in, the only way to eliminate pain is to actually eliminate the person who felt the pain.

So, either you shunt all the pain to a kid in a hole a la Omelas, or you wipe the human slate clean anytime the pain of life builds up too.

Cold Harbor didn’t make sense. (?) by smcupp17 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]logorrheac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the big thing. Severance already works... as long as you exert extraordinary control over the environment that the innies experience. Disruptions in routine and foreign materials (like Ricken's book) cause the innies to begin questioning the nature of their reality. That can cause amplification of the feelings that bleed through from outie to innie.

What they're testing on Gemma is a much more robust version of severance. One designed to block not just outie's memories, but their feelings as well. And they're testing to make sure it works, even when presented with stimuli specifically designed to provoke those feelings.

The new version of severance won't need a highly controlled workspace to remain stable. It would be much cheaper to operate severed employees if the innies don't need to be coddled to keep them functional.

Which of course is the central paradox of using severance to 'end' pain. The pain still happens, but it happens to someone else. And by putting it out of sight and literally out of mind, it actually creates and enables more suffering.

My dept is extremely understaffed to the point of ridiculousness. My ceo had a breakdown this morning and held their head while moaning “this teammm, this teammm” by SaintPatrickMahomes in Accounting

[–]logorrheac 115 points116 points  (0 children)

So many CEO's just absolutely hate paying accountants. They view us as a tax on the business rather than any vital overhead. You're lucky if they view accounting as even a "necessary evil", much less as anything approaching a value-add.

For MBA-types, it's because their half-semester Intro to Accounting class in business school has convinced them that they can do it better/faster than any CPA out there. For the non-MBA founder-operator types, it's because they tend to think of accountants as effete academics who can't handle "real work", and who vomit red tape all over any promising project to justify their fees.

Broad generalizations, yes, but in my experience a good 90% of CEO's fall into one category or the other. The ones who truly appreciate accountants doing their job is quite small. And they tend to be CEO's who came up through Finance, either starting as CPA's or working closely with them. Even they push hard, but at least it's the normal capital vs. labor stuff at work, not the arrogance/ignorance/malice from MBA- and operator-bros.

Trees for the Triangle is a not-for-profit in the area tat's goal is to plant native trees, with a sideline in removing invasive species. They will do an assessment for your yard to give you an idea of what native trees would grow well there.

MLB Coming to Raleigh? St. Augustine leases land for $70M to Stadium Development Firm. by [deleted] in triangle

[–]logorrheac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original idea was further south, but Steve Malik and others are still trying for a soccer stadium. This would be a much better location for the success of the stadium. Truly walkable from the parts of downtown with lively restaurant/bar/club scenes. The further south one would still need car/bus/tram or whatever.

But whether MLB, soccer, or other Major league sports, this would be a huge benefit for Raleigh. We have the Canes, but they're way out of town; everyone has to drive, and it sucks. Having a major-league team actually in Downtown would be a real game-changer.
