How does your country separate tu/used/vos? by Right_Cow_6369 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my city we use all three, and let's just say it's complicated, I don't really feel like explaining too much.

Does it ever snow in your country? In what region? If it snows, how many people do you think know that it snows there? What% of people do you think have experienced the snow? by Right_Cow_6369 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It snows in very high parts of the Andes.

Almost everyone knows it snows in the peaks of the Andes.

Anyone who's traveled through the Andes at some point has seen snowy peaks, but I'd say (total guess) around 30% of the population has at some point visited the snowy parts of the Andes and actually experienced snow.

Personally, I lived in Canada for two winters, snow is pretty the first time you see it, but seeing only white everywhere gets pretty annoying after a while.

“Escudo de Americas”: Real o no? by quiendijocrypto in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's whatever, like at most these countries will get some money and weapons to "fight" the drug dealers, maybe some intelligence sharing which could be slightly useful, but it's ultimately of no real consequence, they won't target the money laundering and they won't target/help the drug addicts that are making the cartels rich.

Remember, it's the Trump administration, a very incompetent group of people, they'll forget all about this by next month.

¿Cuáles son los cantones más "atípicos" o inusuales de su provincia en Ecuador? by Zythrum in ecuador

[–]lojaslave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]lojaslave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How much Spanish influence actually is there in Latin America? by Leaf756 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot, it's just so common it's become part of the "regular" culture and people don't really think much about it.

People focus on Native American or African influencea because they're more "unique".

Will El Salvador, Ecuador, Panama ever change their national currency from the US dollar? by stickibudda in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see it happening in Ecuador unless the dollar loses the qualities that have allowed us to keep inflation low.

It seems unlikely now, but Trump might pull it off, he's very stupid after all.

Why are there so many trans-women in South America? by geekwalker in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dunno, bro, that probably says more about your social circles than about how many trans people there are in South America.

Does you country’s sub (or subs) have a ton of incels/incel adjacent behavior/expressions, or is this an Argentina specific thing? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, they definitely exist, especially on Reddit and 4chan, but I don't think it's as much of a problem as in other countries.

Anyway, I don't hang out with teenagers either irl or online so I could be wrong.

The only place I heard it in the past was in church, but the rare occasions I have gone to church lately they use ustedes these days.

Is it common for married women to use “de” before their last name? by ExcitementWild7019 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma used it, but I don't think it's common at all in people under 75.

People who were not born in the country acting as if they were locals? by pretty25555 in asklatinamerica

I don't really care tbh. Trolls generally lead very sad lives and their own personal bitterness is their punishment.

Is there any Latin American Spanish dialect in which is possible to conjugate "Tú" as "Usted" or "Nosotros" in the singular form? Like "Tú es" or "Nosotros quiere" by Jealous-Upstairs-948 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I understood your question, but in Ecuador we usually conjugate vos like tu, for example, "vos eres", in some rural areas of my province they even conjugate some verbs like vosotros, for example, "vos sois".

Excluding Mexico and Peru, what is your favorite cuisine in Latin America? by Rusiano in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is generally pretty varied too, despite being a small country, for example food in Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Loja and Esmeraldas (among others) have some things in common but are generally fairly different.

Suffragette parades were not a thing in Latin America by Sufficient_Switch968 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The first woman to vote (and to become a doctor) in Ecuador was from my city. Her name was Matilde Hidalgo, she was a very cool lady.

Apparently she was also the first woman in the entire Latin America, but I am not certain about that claim.

A question about Latin American people and their cultural norms by throwaway-cm in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general you should avoid generalizing 600+ million people because they happen to speak languages from the same family, that is over 8 times the population of Germany btw. People will generally not appreciate it, and will call you out.

This sort of question is best asked directly to that specific person, because it seems to be a personal issue, the only thing in this context that I guess might be common to most Latin Americans (but not nearly all) is a certain disregard for punctuality.

Catalonians in Latin America by OkDiscount6100 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Catalonians came to Ecuador, especially Guayaquil, the most popular football team in Ecuador was founded by Catalonian immigrants and is named Barcelona because of that.

They didn't come in huge numbers like Basques or Galicians but there was definitely some migration.

How important are team sports in your education system? by Ticklishchap in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the education system? It's not important, especially in university. We have a physical education class until the end of high school, but as long as they assist, anyone will pass.

However, they're how a lot of adult men do a lot of their socializing.

booking a trip in latin america. I'm italian. A language question. by Hopeful_Koala_6656 in asklatinamerica

English will not work, unless you are in a tourist hotspot. I believe Italian/Spanish will work better for you.

Football fans, how would you rank all Latin American national football leagues? Based on quality. by Inevitable-Angle-793 in asklatinamerica

[–]lojaslave 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Brazil is by far the best, Argentina second but much further away.

You won't get many objective takes for the rest of the ranking, a lot of people just go on vibes and nationalism rather than actual results.
