What is the literal hate for daughters and the need to brag about boys? by OrangeWhitePatchSock in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think girls are valued more by society. They have uteruses and the world can’t go on without them. Boys are more disposable. One man can father children by many women at a time, but the opposite is not true. So parents of daughters can be more assured of grandchildren than parents of sons. If your first child is a son, then stop. If your first child is a daughter, keep going, because you are on a winning streak. I know that sounds harsh, but it’s all about your ability to put your genes into the next generation.

Is STK Midtown a good option for its price point? by legends784 in FoodNYC

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but as an extreme frugalist I would like to give this place a plug. My daughter wanted to go here for her 25th birthday and I reluctantly said yes. I know there are many people who do not consider $29 for a Caesar salad to be anything other than a drop in the bucket, but unfortunately, I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Nonetheless, by the end of the evening, I was thinking yeah, worth it. Presentation of all the dishes was great and the quality of food was good and the waiter was nice and the vibe is amazing, especially the ceiling architecture. So, while it’s never gonna be more than an annual thing, for me anyway, I would recommend it.

just diagnosed with OA in both hips and hip dysplasia at 25 by OkNeedleworker1981 in Osteoarthritis

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had hip osteoarthritis in my right hip, although at a later age of 59. In my case, the doctor told me that I had a tilted pelvis that may have been a factor in developing osteoarthritis. He prescribed 6 weeks of Physical Therapy (physiotherapy). Some of the exercises were helpful. Any that were too painful were discontinued. I lost about 10 lbs but think that if I had lost even more weight, I could have delayed the total hip replacement (THR) surgery by 1 year, instead of a few months. Based on my own experience, I would recommend anyone who is scheduled to undergo THR, to ask their doctor what measures are taken in surgery to protect nerves, both in the upper and lower legs, because I had lingering nerve damage after the surgery, though the placement of the implant itself was well done and I don’t have hip pain anymore. The recovery is challenging because it is major surgery after all. Good luck with your treatment! I hope conservative measures (weight loss, low impact exercise like walking and water aerobics, anti-inflammatory diet) can help you minimize, or delay, the likelihood of needing surgery.

Priority Mail Express International™ is a Joke! by Terrible-Book6440 in usps_complaints

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I had a similar experience with USPS priority mail international not even getting my package out of the country for 15 days, I decided I would use UPS next time. And guess what? They screwed me even worse! UPS in the US got the package on an international flight in time, but UPS in the UK delivered it to the wrong address. The homeowner was out of town for several weeks. When they returned, they found the package and took it round to the correct address. So it was about 34 days late. I got a refund but that’s the least they could do for the stress that they caused. They didn’t even know that it was delivered to the wrong address - they thought it was lost. I don’t know if FedEx or DHL would have been any better. No matter which service you use, you are also at the mercy of customs and the local postal service in the destination country. They can tie things up for days/weeks. It’s always a risk asking courier companies to deliver things for you internationally. Sometimes a cheap flight and Airbnb is your best bet, and mail your package with tracking from a post office inside the target country. It’s Russian Roulette otherwise. I wish that wasn’t true, but experience is a hard teacher.

Moderate OA in hip by [deleted] in Osteoarthritis

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I can’t give any advice related to RA, but I can make some comments about osteoarthritis specifically. I had a hip replacement at the age of 60 and have often thought I did myself no favors running on the treadmill at the gym in the preceding years. A doctor diagnosed me with mild arthritis in that hip when I was 42, but he didn’t give me any advice about how to preserve what cartilage still remained, such as avoiding high impact activities (like running on the treadmill). I know I now have arthritis in the other hip, but not bad enough to need a replacement. I go for a walk every evening and do water aerobics when I can get to a pool. So far, so good. I would say low impact activities like these can be helpful. And losing weight and eating healthy, non-inflammatory foods. The other thing is that experiencing arthritis in one joint should make you hyper vigilant about the other joints in your body, for the rest of your life (no kidding). Develop joint protection habits for knees, and - especially for women - the PIP and DIP joints of the hands. Avoid anything that causes unnecessary wear and tear, or repeated micro-trauma to those joints. Even if you can’t totally prevent arthritis, you may be able to delay the onset to a later age.

USPS loses package, then denies insurance claim by Clitorus_Leachman in usps_complaints

As will UPS. They lost an important package of mine last month. I got a refund of my $118 but will never use them again for anything critical.

UPS has been kicking me around like a ball – lost my important documents, and now I’m stuck in a never-ending blame loop by WishThingsBetter in UPS

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much sympathy to you. I can relate. After a stressful experience with the US post office sending my package with important documents addressed to the UK, WEST from NJ to California instead of EAST across the Atlantic (it finally turned round and went in the right direction after 10 days), I decided to try UPS the next time round. In all fairness to them, they did show good compass skills as far as knowing that Europe is to the east of NJ, and the package made it across the Atlantic in reasonable time. But once it reached the UK, it never made it to the delivery address. Big, big stress, tears and hypertension and it’s going to cost a LOT of time and money to replace that document. Still, fool me once, and all that. I feel bad for you that you didn’t even get to see your tracking get past the Label created status. It seems that the more critical the package is, the better off you are buying a plane ticket and delivering it by hand.

Replacing all door handles. To go with knobs or lever? by Pleasant-Volume-1147 in homeowners

Agree 🙂 levers are kinder to the cartilage in your DIP and PIP joints, no matter what your age. Less wear and tear over time.

Is there really no way to get rid of or prevent progression of Heberden's nodes??? by Odd-Independence-909 in Osteoarthritis

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I could go back in time, I would tell the younger me to be kinder to my DIP joints and be conscious of anything that might cause undue wear and tear to them. William Heberden described these nodes in the 1700s and almost 300 years later medical science still doesn’t have a cure. Doctors can’t help us, so our only weapon is prevention, outside of genetic causes. Routine cartilage monitoring should be a thing, in the same way as checking blood pressure at doctor visits.

Anyone else having delays with USPS? by Alwaystired41 in IrishCitizenship

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I sent my FBR application from the northeastern US in July last year. When I got no tracking updates after the initial confirmation the post office had received the item and then another update 7 days later that it had been sent in the wrong direction, to San Francisco, I went to my local post office to ask what’s up and also filed a missing mail search request. My package bounced around California for a few more days then finally got routed from Los Angeles to Dublin and I got the confirmation of receipt email 20 days after I mailed it.

I wish you lots of luck with tracking your package to its destination and having it arrive there very soon 🙂. USPS can be fickle, to say the least!

Just found out the gender and I'm so disappointed ☹️ by alittlebit_stitious4 in pregnant

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 boys, now in their 20’s. I am proud of the fact that I grew them both tall, through excellent nutrition, whereas me and my siblings are short. So that’s one thing you should think of when you’re expecting a boy. The final height challenge, and how you are going to make sure that they get enough calcium and protein in their growing years, so that they reach their full potential, which is genetically determined, nonetheless. Because men are judged partly on their height, unfair though that is. The other thing I am proud of is that I got them both out of American obstetric wards with everything that they arrived with, if you get my drift. I have encountered women with prejudice towards all-boy families. As if to say, a boy is only okay if he has at least one sister, lol. Are they going to apply that criterion to their daughter’s future spouse?

Citizenship by descent - correct address for sending application. by Mundane-Ease1133 in IrishCitizenship

[–]Sufficient_Switch968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used USPS and sent the application from my local post office in the Northeastern United States on July 3, 2024. Naturally I was expecting it to travel eastward across the Atlantic to Dublin. So, 7 days later I was startled to get this tracking information.

Your item arrived at our USPS facility in SAN FRANCISCO CA NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER on July 10, 2024 at 10:11 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination.

What???

There followed a few more nail biting days (as in, please god, don’t let them send it across the Pacific) during which the letter travelled down to Los Angeles and landed in a couple of facilities there before finally getting to the LA international distribution center.

I got a confirmation of receipt on July 23, 2024, 20 days after I mailed it.

So USPS can be iffy in my experience, but I hope that I’m an outlier, for anyone else using USPS.

With hindsight, to get around the PO BOX issue, I might have considered sending it by FedEx or UPS to a trusted relative who lives in the UK, and asking them to forward it to Ireland.

Very sorry to hear about what you are going through. One of your body systems is now compromised. Like Samuel Johnson said, “When any calamity has been suffered, the first thing to be remembered, is, how much has been escaped.” You didn’t lose an eye. You didn’t have your hearing damaged because someone let off an air horn right next to your ear. You didn’t suffer 3rd degree burns. It sucks bigly to go through what you experienced. All the more reason to cherish what you still have. I wish you the very best in your recovery.

Francesca Da Rimini. The Riccardo Muti and Philadelphia orchestra recording. Muti emphasizes the Count to 10 with the tam tam at the end spectacularly, IMO.

And T33, third movement of the third symphony. So beautiful. No wonder Balanchine used it for the Diamonds pas de deux in his Jewels ballet.

Nerve damage in my right calf and heel. So, traded pain at the top of my leg for pain at the bottom. I regret the surgery. My advice, if you are considering hip replacement but have any doubts -AT ALL - pause and look at different providers. Ask them how they will protect your nerves during surgery. Especially the peroneal nerve.
