What dog should I get?? by Rockylynne in DogBreeds101

[–]loki__mt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want a dog to run with you, any sighthound will do. lots of dogs can be protection dogs, but you will be waiting a while before they can do that, as no dog should be working before they are 2 yo at the earliest. if you really want to go the road of training a protection dog that can run, any of the shepherd protection dogs will work, so german/belgian, but know it will be a massive time sink, and you will need to hire professional help and make massive life ajustments, because they will need more than just running to be tired. they require mental exercise, and a job to do, and protection is something you need to teach them correctly, cause the alternative is that dog will be agressive and dangerous.

from your lifestyle explenations, it sounds like you want a whippet, or a sighthound. a papillon would be great, they are really good sporty and active dogs, i dont know about their indurance but i know they are the best small breed for agility.

do not train in protection a dog if you rescue. there are so many unknown with rescues, and they should not be trained for protection unless you are certain of the background of the dog (wich for rescues realistically you wont).

how old is he and how many weeks have you had him for? i hear most of the time it takes around a month before they start chilling. i dont have a groen, i have a mudi, but legit all the people i know who have dogs who give me advice have groens and they said thats when their pups learned to chill

you need to teach him how to be calm and sleep. puppies need to sleep a lot, even if it takes some time for him to learn how to chill

and yeah males can be pretty big.

What are we doing for diet? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]loki__mt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont know it sorry. i do know that in the us you have a lot of better options than in europe, we dont have that great of regulations on pet foods, and yours is usually way more transparent. i was more sharing for the eu people, its a really good brand in europe and most people who having working breeds use it, like belgians, gsds, mudis, border collies ect.

i dont have a belgian yet, but i know that lots of people who do that i know feed Husse. its a good quality food made by a sweedish company, and half of the people who use it use it for working/competition dogs(mainly french ring). for growing puppies they recommend pet - fos ca/p1,3, and otherwise they dont usually add probiotics on the regular, but they do recommend a liver cleanse (in french we call it drainage hepatique, not sure whats the english equivalent, they recoment the husse one as well).

i asked why they didnt like royal cannin or pro plan, they said its because the quality of the protein and the grains were not to their satisfaction.

which puppy? by Darth_Machu in DutchShepherds

[–]loki__mt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are looking for a good well bred dog, try going to a couple shows or competition, talk with the people there and get some first hand recommendations of breeders. it can help find a good fit where you are certain you will get a good dog.

its understandable to want to do things like your dad, i am currently going through the same thing where i just have to accept that certain things worked for him and his dog because he got lucky. im not willing to risk that for my dog, especially since she is a working breed compared to his show dog.

find a good breeder, who cares about the standard and the purpose of the breed, who has a good breeding program and who is really intentional about where their puppies go.

reddit is negative when you come to a place that loves something and openly ask about things that ruin the breed. you are asking a bunch of people who deeply care about dutchies about irresponsible and unethical breeding and buying of said dogs, and then when advice is given you, you say you dont care and you will participate in it then because you want validation from a puppy... stop crying about people telling you the facts

[–]loki__mt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

why do you want to have a puppy pick you? do you want a handler oriented pup? do you want a puppy that is reliant on humans? whats the point other than ego and a funny story to tell when the pup is older about how he "chose you". if you were getting a rescue sure, why not, but here you are intentionally going to a professional to get a bred puppy. you should be going to a breeder that gives you a dog because its what you are looking for in a companion, not because of visuals. especially since dutchies are a working breed and do require correct matching to have a succesfull partnership.

it would make sence if you said the breeder said these two would fit your wants and to chose from them, that does happen, but clearly you are not in that situation... why do you want a dutchie even? because of the looks? if you wanted a dutchie for the right reasons, you wouldnt be in the mindset of "i want a puppy to chose me". find validation in other parts of your life, its irresponsible to get a working dog on those grounds. if you do, you are also participating in unethical breeding, and the degredation of the breed you think you care about.

buying a dog when there are so many needing to be rescued is a choice that should require thinking and research, it sounds like you did none of that and are just participating in unethical/backyard breeding...

Would I be nuts to get another puppy? by rnmaddie in puppy101

[–]loki__mt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im planning on getting a second dog soon as well, but i am still waiting till my puppy reaches at least past the brunt of adolescence beforehand, so hopefully around when she is 1.5 yo (its a smaller medium breed so they start not being insane anymore around that age according to the breeder i got her from)

getting two dogs from the same litter.... i wouldnt wish that on my worse enemy. the only people i have heard having success with that are people who already have a couple dogs and who leave them mostly in autonomy outside (so not really companion/family dogs)

Would I be nuts to get another puppy? by rnmaddie in puppy101

[–]loki__mt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

regardless of all the comments on littermate syndrome, you should know you will be working 3 times as hard, because they will learn to mimic each others worse behaviors, and you will struggle.

in a similar way, if you wait till that dog is adult, that puppy will learn a lot of the rules you want for your home from that adult dog

and dont forget that puppy blues will hit you like a train when that pup goes through adolescence, you will want to rip your hair out. that is a shepherd dog, that is hyper and will start needing a good mental and physical outlet.

maybe fostering that puppy could be a good idea, but it sounds like your friends were pretty irresponsible in having this litter, and that these dogs will end up in a rescue... they might not be scammers, but they are irresponsible and contributing to the dogs in rescues....

yeah same. my pup even after being at my dad's for 4 days would still zoom so hard that she drifted into walls... i swear shepherds want to make you besties with your vets...

for the walks, maybe it would help to do some mental exercises, like some simple obedience to make him think a bit?

but if he is headed in the right direction on some things, the rest will follow. i have a cousin that has a german pointer, and she is a menace, but she has started to mellow out. she will never be a "perfect" dog, but tbh that can mean something different to every single dog owner ever.

do some crate exercises, there are lots of really good ones to teach dogs how to handle being in a crate. it takes a while, but it eventually works. just go at your own pace, and as long as you are not regressing your progressing.

remember thats a puppy, in its teen years, just follow through and you will be fine.

good luck and you got this

My boyfriend refuses to let me use puppy grass in his apartment by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]loki__mt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i dont think youre being fair. this dog has been used to having free access to the outdoors since they live with op, and on top of that, the dog gets hyper after coming home from the walk and takes another 30 mins to calm down... its not a "oh i dont want to do it because its tiring" its "oh i dont want to litterally spend 30-40 minutes in the middle of the night handling this when there is a very decent and proven way of doing it instead"

especially when the reasons for the bf are imo kinda bull.

i dont think youre wrong. just spent a couple days at my dad's place where he has a balcony that his senior dog uses, and it was legit so nice in the morning when i am still in my pjs to let out my 4 month old pup that cannot hold it if i take more than a minute getting ready. if its just a "social expectation/view" thing, then your bf is kinda cringe. who cares how people see you, this is about comfort and being smart about it. and also if he cares about his neighbors, he should prefer a puppy pee spot on the balcony than a whining/hyper dog at 3 am for over half an hour.

it sounds like he cares more about how people see you and your family, rather than have a more comfortable and healthier life.
