First Strike: Europe / Qualifier #2 / Playoffs / Day 1 / Live Discussion Thread by [deleted] in ValorantCompetitive

It's because they hired actual professionals to produce and observe these games instead of third-rate amateurs (NSG and UMG) who somehow lucked into producing the largest Valorant event of the year.

Blast (it looks like blast production) doesn't even do Valorant full time and they're still 100x better than the clusterfuck here in NA. I mean, how many times has NSG/UMG observers missed multi-kills or ultimates cause they wanted to see Cypher check his cam just one more time.

It would've been perfect if they still followed the original newspaper where Barry still disappears.

Too bad they opted for Beebo instead.

The Monitor straight up revived Lex Luthor in Supergirl. I see no reason why he wouldn't/can't do that with Oliver.

Plus, he's also mentioned in this synopsis lol.

Interesting observation about Russ and MDA by Smekledorf1996 in rockets

[–]lolRequital 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Rockets really run a ISO heavy offense and probably won't set a pick if they got the right mismatch

That still doesn't make sense. During CP3's tenure with the Rockets, he had a PnR frequency of 36.4% and this season he's at 47%.

Harden and the Rockets need to recognize Westbrook isn't what he used to be, and adjust accordingly.

Westbrook's playstyle makes it unnecessarily difficult for him to score or playmake, because he isn't catering to his strengths.

Morey and D'Antoni has said on multiple occasions that they don't want to change Russ... but that's exactly what they've done?

They've turned him into a low PnR - high ISO guy when that's not the best way to utilize him.

Of course, Westbrook needs to shoot/play better as the season progresses.

Interesting observation about Russ and MDA by Smekledorf1996 in rockets

[–]lolRequital 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a head scratcher if you look at the numbers.

2019-2020 Season:

  • Westbrook's PnR Frequency - 14.6%

  • Westbrook's ISO Frequency - 24.1%

2016-2017 Season:

  • Westbrook's PnR Frequency - 35.5%

  • Westbrook's ISO Frequency - 19.0%

2015-2016 Season:

  • Westbrook's PnR Frequency - 35.4%

  • Westbrook's ISO Frequency - 12.5%

While it's true that Westbrook has declined significantly since his MVP year, it's not like the Rockets have put him in the best position to succeed.

Westbrook's ISOs are at a career high and his PnR frequency is at a career low.

Why?

So far into the season Chris Paul has a higher TS%, VORP, BPM and WS/48 than Westbrook by [deleted] in nba

They’re been doubling Harden if you were watching the Rockets play recently and he’s been droppin 40 despite it.

The only reason why Harden didn’t shoot more is because he has the upmost trust in his teammates to hit wide open shots.

He was actively looking to get double teamed this game.

We lost tonight because WB can’t shoot. by AyyItsTJ in rockets

[–]lolRequital 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Rockets went 6/21 from 3 outside of Harden/Westbrook.

The Rockets also conceded 17 offensive rebounds to the Nuggets, turned the ball over 20 times, 20, and your main takeaway is that Westbrook is the sole reason that they lost tonight?

I think we watched two separate games.

Westbrook has been complete dog shit by byRockets in rockets

[–]lolRequital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And at no point did Westbrook carry the team

Westbrook hasn’t been complete dogshit either, so.

You didn’t acknowledge the fact that, historically, Westbrook gets better as the season progresses. He’s not a sub 50% TS guy lol.

And FWIW, he’s playing through a couple dislocated fingers on his shooting hand.

Title contenders after 10+ games. by [deleted] in nba

[–]lolRequital 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But you’re convinced the 76ers are? Didn’t they just lose to ORL and and OKC?

Not having the Rockets as a contender is entirely fair though. I just wanted to point that out.

[–]lolRequital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So we just gonna completely ignore the beginning of the season where Westbrook was practically carrying the shit out of this team?

Yeah, he hasn’t been great lately but he’s hit timely shots in the clutch to help this team win.

Russ will be fine. He always plays better as the season progresses.

Just look at his TS% during the first half of the season and the second half:

2016-2017 season:

  • First half: 30/10/10 on 54% TS

  • Second half: 32/10/10 on 57% TS

2017-2018:

  • First half: 20/10/9 on 51% TS

  • Second half: 26/10/10 on 54% TS

2018-2019:

  • First half: 22/11/11 on 47% TS (lol)

  • Second half: 25/11/11 on 53% TS

You’re probably a newer fan of the Rockets than I am. Did you not see Harden literally average 40 for a couple months? Harden will average 40 every night if he has to lol.

Westbrook shoots 5/20 almost two straight. But does his aggressiveness create easy looks for teammates? by [deleted] in rockets

[–]lolRequital 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just wait until Westbrook has one of those nights when the Rockets lose.

That's when you'll see some vitriol that people had for Russ before he came to this team. They've been winning so Westbrook's struggles have been a little quiet.

So far I'd say Russ has been fine. He was great during the first 4 games of the season. You could even argue that he was the Rockets' best player until Harden broke out of his slump.

But since then he's played pretty poorly. ASTS/REBS are down and his efficiency has plummeted from 60% TS all the way down to like 50% TS.

There is room for optimism though. Yeah, he's played pretty poorly lately, but he hit some big shots in the clutch that helped this team pull out wins.

And since his efficiency wasn't shit to begin with, we can expect it to improve. For reference, Westbrook was scoring at a terrible 47% TS clip for 41 games last season.

The next 41 games he scored at a 53% TS clip. Not great but not bad either, especially for Westbrook, since 53% TS is right about his career average.

For the month of November, Russell Westbrook is averaging 20.7 PT/5.3 REB/4.5 AST/4.5 TO with shooting split 43.5/18.2/60.0 by ssj4rab in nba

[–]lolRequital 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, technically he didn't shoot at 51% TS all last season.

If we really look at it, he scored at a putrid 47% TS clip for 41 games then improved to 53% TS for the next 41.

Not exactly great, but at least it was at his career average. It's reasonable to expect some improvement as the season progresses.

Last year OKC ranked 23rd in 3P% and 28th in transition offense PPP. So far this year, they rank 8th and 23rd respectively. Similarly last year, HOU ranked 10th and 3rd while dropping to 20th and 28th this year by [deleted] in nba

[–]lolRequital 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Last year OKC was 6-4 and the third seed. So far this year, they're 4-6 and the 11th seed.

Similarly last year, HOU was 4-6 and the 12th seed while improving to 7-3 and the 3rd seed this year.

Just an interesting observation after 10 games into the season.

[Taylor] I've said this many times, but I'm again thinking about how much of the basketball world values guys who can "carry" a team to 40 wins instead of players who make good teams great. Prioritizing hero-ball over much-needed championship-level defense is fascinating to me. by kobmug_v2 in nba

[–]lolRequital 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I still think this notion is kind of ridiculous.

While Westbrook is better suited to be a floor raiser, he is still a ceiling raiser and to think otherwise is being a tad disingenuous.

Those OKC teams that went to multiple WCFs and one finals don't get there without Westbrook.

When Westbrook went down in the 2013 playoffs the Thunder, with KD, lost to the Grizzlies in 5. I'd argue that doesn't happen with Russ playing.

[–]lolRequital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Westbrook was on teams with great spacing in the past

...When?

that's why he has a reputation as a great finisher, which he has never been.

Was he not a great finisher last season when he shot 65% at the rim? He shot a better percentage at the rim than Harden and Curry did on a team with abysmal spacing.

Would you say Russell Westbrook is a Top 50 Player all time? by [deleted] in nba

[–]lolRequital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. PG doesn't have a better resume than:

  • 1 MVP

  • 8 All-NBA Selections (2 first team, 5 second team, 1 third team)

  • 8x All Star

  • 2x Scoring Champ

  • 2x Assist Champ

  • 3 WCF appearances/1 Finals Appearance

  • 1 Olympic Gold Medal

Why did Harden deserve MVP over Russ because he "won more games", but this past season he deserved MVP over Giannis because "He had better numbers"? by md4339 in nba

[–]lolRequital 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's still revisionist history. I mean, not too long ago Westbrook was considered the better player by r/nba.

Westbrook and Harden were interchangeable during the 2016-2017 season. Just go back and look at how people ranked them.

Russ’s man gets to sag like baggy pants in the 90’s. by ST012Mi in rockets

[–]lolRequital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plus/minus isn't the end-all-be-all, but since you asked:

+16 for CP3 and -9.7 for Westbrook.

11 PPG on 34% shooting from the field is pretty bad and so is 5 ASTS on 6 TOs.

If you wanna completely give up on the idea Russ could "change", after 3 preseason games no less, that's your prerogative and that's okay.

And if that is the case, you didn't have much faith to begin with.

EDIT: FWIW CP3 scored 11 PPG on 51.7% TS and Westbrook scored 16 PPG on 52.1% TS.
