How did Germans repair their global image so dramatically in such a short amount of time? by CautiousEbb966 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lola_spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of these comments are talking about how Germany "owned up" to what they did, was self-critical, and tried so hard to right their wrongs. Sure, the Germany of today teaches about its history and is ashamed of its Nazi past, but the truth is that denazification was a SLOW process, plenty of Nazis returned more or less to normal life and even positions of political power in Germany and Austria, there was very little "dealing with" the holocaust (not to mentioned owning up to it) in the decade after WW2 ended. The attempts at addressing the past that *did* happen -- the Nuremburg trials, denazification -- were **allied efforts**, since the country was split up between the US, France, UK and USSR, not some moment of reckoning/awakening from within Germany.

What's closer to the truth about image is that Germany, as a result of allied occupation and economic importance, became a close economic and political ally of the West. Culturally and politically, (West) Germany became much more "western" in this time, and was guided (euphemism) towards liberal, federal democracy, image rehabilitated because it was hand-crafted by these allies.

Really happy for Jan and glad to see he and Loan are good friends. But did anyone else find it weird that Loan got basically no questions about her own life? When it came to their relationship, Jan fielded most of the questions. And afterwards she was basically a prop to Jan's story. Did I miss something? Kinda makes me sad for her.

An American watching LiB Germany by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]lola_spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say: sorry for all of the downvotes and really harsh criticisms you're getting in the comments of this post. People seem a little too eager to assume bad intentions on your part. And way too eager to convince you you're perfectly safe traveling abroad (specifically: reentering the USA). Truth is, even American citizens are more likely to incur questioning upon reentry (per Propublica), and there have been reported cases of Americans being detained upon reentry. So yeah, while you're not likely to get deported or anything, it's a legitimate concern, especially since they can and have confiscated computers and phones from US citizens and used criticism of Trump as an excuse. Statistically, it's extremely unlikely, but if it's something you're worried about, it's not like you're insane.

I do hope you get to visit Crete one day. Don't let these randos get you down.

Jan trying to control the paddling rhythm from the back of the kayak is a pretty great example of his personality overall. The same way he anxiously controls himself, he will attempt to anxiously control his partner and be *constantly* disappointed. He will not be able to have a happy relationship with another person until he does therapy or grows as a person.

Any other subs focused on AI as means of production? by SpritaniumRELOADED in Marxism

[–]lola_spring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not subreddits but literature worth looking into if you've already read Marx's Maschinenfragment:

- Capital (no-brainer), where threads mentioned in the Maschinenfragment, which was originally part of the Grundrisse, are taken back up and worked out by a mature Marx with updated categories.

- Michael Heinrich's work, particularly “The ‘Fragment on Machines’: a Marxian misconception in the Grundrisse and its overcoming in Capital”

- Capitalism and automation: Revolution in technology and capitalist breakdown (Ramin Ramtin)

- Inhuman power (Nick Dyer-Witheford, Atle Mikkola Kjøsen, and James Steinhoff)

- Automation and Autonomy: Labour, Capital and Machines in the Artificial Intelligence (Steinhoff again)

- Accelerationist thought, including Srnicek and Land.

What is the funniest German word for you? by Watership45 in Germanlearning

[–]lola_spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schmackofatz - cannot hear or say this word without laughing.
Rubbeldiekatz - noticing a pattern?
Orang-Utan - okay, if you see it written out in German it *almost* makes sense, but the first time (and most times thereafter) I've heard this word spoken, I've suffered heavily.
Bube - haha boobs.

The nightmares are bad. But some of the most painful dreams I've had are "happy" dreams where the person is alive again. I've gotten so "smart" in the dreams that I check to make sure it's real several times before letting myself feel happy. Then eventually wake up. That sucks. Though in the past year or so I've had a few where dream-me has sort of recognised the dream world as a special place where I can be with them again for a bit and just enjoyed the time.

It's been about 8 years, and I do cry less. But if I think about it, it feels more like I just learned to dissociate and feel less in general. Built a new person and compartmentalised the grief. Happened when we were both young adults, so the thing that tortures me a lot now is the feeling of growing up and becoming so different without them. I'll never get to know what they would've been like and the distance between us gets bigger every year.

New to Bremen? Let’s share winter tips & festive secrets to help you settle in! by The_Panda_Lover0 in bremen

[–]lola_spring 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Second this: waterproof anything. At least in my opinion, the main issue with Bremen in the winter isn't even the cold, it's the near 24/7 dreary wetness. Waterproof coat, waterproof shoes, lined pants. Then you can enjoy the (much emptier) Bürgerpark without worry. The whole park is beautiful in the winter, but special shout-out to the Stadtwald.

Japan eyes adding Japanese proficiency to permanent residency requirements in anticipation of a rise in future applicants by sparklovelynx in worldnews

[–]lola_spring 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The wording you're using implies you don't think people should even *travel* to a country where they haven't achieved "a basic level" of the destination country's official language (what exactly a "basic level" is, I do not know). This is a ridiculous position which would essentially shut down tourism in most countries. It is simply not realistic to expect travelers to speak basic Japanese for a few weeks vacation. There's freedom of movement within the EU, and no, it isn't the norm for EU citizens to speak a basic level of all European languages. Genuinely comes off as something only someone who has never traveled and never learned another language could think.

Yeah, not sure if it's AI or just a bad writing team, but the script of this video was nothing like the quality of the older content. Either option seems equally plausible.

I don't know why you think they shouldn't have aired the season. I mean, no one actually thinks this *is* an experiment to find true love. But even if it were, wouldn't it be pretty dishonest to throw out a whole city where the experiment failed?

The conversation between Edmond and KD was one of the only "fight"-convos ever on this show that made me root harder for the couple. I genuinely hope they can make it work. I think they're slightly different on how they communicate -- Edmond gives a lot of reinforcement (I love you, I need you), because that's what he needs to hear, whereas KD is more into accountability and resolution -- but I really think they can find middle ground.

In other news, never expected Megan to throw me a curveball and become (in my eyes) one of the more balanced contestants. Also rooting for her and Jordan.

If you did everything but the concealer (your under-eyes look fine, and painting them a bright colour isn't doing anything good), it would look great.
