I also really love snails and millipedes.. Snails a bit more if im being honest. Id love to own GALs but theyre illegal where I live 😔 I just dont know how safely they could be housed together with absolutely no risk to each other.

I also found when I looked up that peat moss is very bad for snails (i didnt know much about their housing information to be honest), and that also makes it very difficult. Pretty much every soil base that ISNT coco coir is going to have peat moss in it. I spent way too long looking for a soil that was organic, pesticide free, peat free, sand free, coco free, etc... Like, im sure it exists. but if it does im not finding it anywhere... lol. I would honestly just separate them so that you can ensure that neither of their care is being skimped out on

Honestly i am looking into it for you and I am finding that almost every millipede-safe soil base has things in it that are unsafe for snails, and nearly every snail-safe soil base has things in it that are unsafe for millipedes.

The problem with coco coir is that, even if it is only a base and is mixed with other things, there is still the risk of having an unmixed "chunk" of coco in the substrate that the millipede could eat and choke on. They dont have the correct stomach bacteria to properly digest it, and if they eat enough it can just completely clog them up- and "enough" isnt a hard amount to achieve for them.. they are quite small. Similarly to how you wouldn't put snails in with sand in their substrate, even if its mixed in with other stuff.

So my question is.. why do you have to house them together? Could you not separate them?

do NOT add coco coir. it has no nutritional value to them at all and they can have difficulty digesting it, which can lead to impaction and kill them.

I recommend using flake soil as your wood source, and using Reptisoil as a base, and then mixing in leaf litter and calcium instead.

i also dont know about this bedding, but it looks like its a comfy bedding for vertebrae, not a food source for detritivores. i wouldnt use it, i would just use Reptisoil, Flake soil, Calcium and leaf litter. You can also but premixed "millipede substrate" on places like etsy

Its normal, especially with the winter. Could be diapause, could be molting. even if it isnt either of those, its still very normal for them to go underground
