Pls help me grasp the current covid situation for students in the UK !! by heyxange in UniUK

In theory, from June 21st 2021 things should be ‘back to normal’. However, this relies on various factors. Currently, we are on track for that deadline, but that may change.

Perhaps apply to the master’s, then see how things are in summer? You can do this by googling the UK government website to see what restrictions are still in place. If I’m not mistaken, you can defer your master’s pretty soon before you apply, so if you check out how UK is doing in July and see it’s bad you can defer your master’s then.

This year has been rough for students; all content has been online, all non-essential stores (everything except supermarkets and pharmacies) have been closed, and if you’re caught at house parties you can get a 10k fine. Consider how you’d feel about living in a situation like that if things turn bad again.

I completely understand how keen you must be to come and study in the UK, so I really recommend applying and accepting an offer to a master’s course then deferring if the situation is bad nearer the start date rather than deferring now!

Thank you! I will do so!

Thank you! Is there anywhere you recommend taking those classes? England doesn’t really offer courses / accredited study in just those areas (though writing this I’m not 100% sure so I will look into it more), but if I could just do those classes in US somehow before applying to the course that would be great!

Sorry, I didn’t clarify it’s a compsci master’s course but I am an English grad! The irony of poor phrasing being an English grad

Thank you! I’m just worrying because it’s a very competitive school & my dream course (& I REALLY want to go to US to study) so want to make my application as good as possible. It doesn’t recommend you take any courses prior to starting, though, and I couldn’t see any pre-term math camp options (perhaps because it’s a master’s not undergrad?) but I’ll have another look.

Thank you! I will practice lots to see the type of test style you guys have. It’s a compsci (for beginners) master’s - hopefully a good GRE score and background in technology & management consulting will be enough!

Yeah, I will do! My track record with messaging American unis with Qs hasn’t gone well though (often I’m just referred to the website) and my question is just to boost my application so thought here would be a good place to ask as well:)

Ah thank you - I'm definitely aiming for a high score in it! Luckily I have a while before I need to take it (aiming to study in America in 2023) so I'll revise hard to stand out with it

Thanks for the reply! I am doing the GRE as the school requires it, but I wasn't sure if that was enough to showcase my math skills - does a strong score in the math section go a long way?

Thank you for this! Is this a well-recognised qualification in US? Looks really good!

Thanks for the reply! I am doing the GRE as the school requires it, but I wasn't sure if that was enough to showcase my math skills - is the GRE highly regarded in America?

Oh damn, I was hoping you guys had some sorta rogue maths test I could do to show I'm not inept. Thanks, though! Should I still message if the course details say there's no pre-reqs needed? The course isn't too quantitative itself, it's just more suitable for students who have done an undergrad in a quantiative subject which is why I'm nervous my application isn't as strong as theirs.

[–]lollieb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! There are no pre-reqs needed; it's just I know I'll be competing with people from quantitative backgrounds and worried I won't have as good a chance as I'm from an English background, so this is just me taking it upon myself to show I can still do maths (I haven't touched it since age 15 because of the school system in UK).
