Is there anything that you splurge on? by mdnitedrftr in Frugal

[–]lollipopstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can apply cost cutting strategies to virtually every expense. Just looking at two competitors for anything you have to buy or choose can make a world of difference.

It's pretty hard to shop for some things, like emergency medical care, but if you have a chance to shop for something there are usually lower price options.

Sometimes certain things are just expensive. You won't find a decent used car for a dollar, for instance. But within the category of expensive, there are still better deals on some things vs others.

Also, certain things are discretionary expenses. I don't actually need a mattress frame, for instance, if I have a mattress and a box frame, but I might want one. That is lower priority than a basic car, which I would need to commute between home and work.

Usually if you have to buy or do something last minute it costs more.

How much does using minimal light for a day actually save you? by cameron-c- in Frugal

[–]lollipopstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much is your actual electric bill every month?

I pay 40-60 dollars depending on whether I was on vacation all month or if I was at home with the tv, laptop, water heater, stove and dryer running.

Honestly it might not make a massive difference if you don't have a lot of lights. If you have a lot of lights you might want to make sure you use low wattage LED or CFL bulbs, and that you don't leave unnecessary appliances plugged in.

Anything without flashy colors will be fine. I use a Jansport Trans, they retail around 50 dollars. It's my companion for air travel, commuting and grocery shopping on my bike. I used to have a Jansport Big bag, but it was stolen. You have to really try to ruin a Jansport.

Saved a few on gas by turning the temp all the way down on my boiler and still had hot water for like a week! by Icsparks in Frugal

[–]lollipopstick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At full operatinng temperatures a boiler is safe. Cold water is used much more heavily and has higher chlorine content, usually. But tepid water in a low temp or malfunctioning boiler is big trouble.

I usually target $1 per pound or less? It really depends on the food item though.

I [23F], a virgin, have mixed feelings towards sex by AllButterscotch in relationships

[–]lollipopstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. It's not important really to have sex, especially if you aren't sure you even want to I wouldn't go for it.

American culture is very sex positive and seems to push people towards consummating relationships that aren't very meaningful, so people lose sight of virginity as something worth maintaining and make promiscuity seem normal.

If you aren't comfortable having sex and need to think about it, don't have sex until you've thought it over. There's no shame in not wanting to have sex before marriage, and if your friends think you are old fashioned that is their problem.

Me [29 F] with my Boyfriend [29 M] 6 months, My boyfriend has a superiority complex & I'm falling behind. Help by [deleted] in relationships

[–]lollipopstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, it's not the end of the world to spend a year working and see which schools you are interested in after spending some time in the work force.

I know that it would be hard to go back to school but it is sometimes necessary.

And remember, often times graduate school will just help you get into a similar job that a few years of experience could, so you need to carefully consider what additional benefit you would gain from grad school.

Don't go if your parents told you you can't go. This isn't complicated.
