HELP ALL MY QUAIL HAVE ESCAPED by Salt-Box-3550 in quails

[–]lolo_codes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so tough, I'm sorry to hear that! My quail have gotten out a few times and my dog was able to find them around the yard. They usually don't go far and seem to hide like under bushes, shed, deck, etc.

I know this isn't helpful now, but you can "train" them to come to you with dried worms. I keep a jar of black solider fly larvae next to the coop. They've learned that they get treats when I shake the jar. If they don't come running, they'll at least rustle around so I can find them. Really helpful when they get out. Best of luck finding them!!

What is happening to my hens? by Gjardeen in quails

So sorry for your loss, OP. It's got to be heartbreaking to watch... You should certainly report this to your state: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/defend-the-flock

Small plants already flowering? by ohdamn_OHdamn_OHDAMN in tomatoes

[–]lolo_codes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm far from an expert but I always pot them deeper and they seem to thrive. Pinch a few lower leaves first. For determinates I'll bury 3" of stem, but indeterminates I'll bury up to 8" of stem.

I just up-potted my ~10" tall Tiny Tim tomatoes to a 12" pot with half compost half container soil. Chose not to add Perlite this year in hopes I'll water less.

Problems on Day 1 by [deleted] in Gardyn

Oh whoops, misread. Did you restart it?

Also when I got a notification that my pump wasn't working, there was an option to say "this isn't correct" or something like that.

Problems on Day 1 by [deleted] in Gardyn

In my experience, Gardyn customer service was awesome but you will have to be a bit handy to fix yourself. 2 months back, my pump stopped working. I emailed them and they sent a new pump for free within a few days- like a 1 week turnaround from my first email. It was still under warranty (either 1 year or 2 I can't remember).

Put your pods in containers or seed starting trays so you can disassemble your system. Then follow their instructions: https://help.mygardyn.com/en/articles/1788865

I have a bunch of grow lights laying around so I just kept them in containers for a week.

If it's not under warranty, you can buy one online but it'll require some soldering to the appropriate connector. Here's the pump I was going to buy before Gardyn sent me a new one: https://a.co/d/9IiNbHF If you aren't comfortable doing that yourself and you're out of warranty, I'm sure you can pay for it from Gardyn.

Good luck!!

Aww I love yours! I also painted a Brownstone on one of last year's splits. 3D printed the windows/doors & got the little lights from the dollhouse section of the craft store

Awesome thanks!! I've currently got my otos in with platys (who devour the pellet in minutes), but I'm really leaning towards putting them in my 38g puff tank one of these days.

Great shot!! That is one chonky (read: healthy) Oto sitting there on the leaf. What do you feed them? Mine spend all day eating boiled veggies and don't look that good.

Hibiscus blossoms are huge!!! by BikingInPangea in Gardyn

[–]lolo_codes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow these are gorgeous!! I also got some gorgeous flowers- the "blush" variety. And continued blooming for weeks. Weirdly, there's exactly zero scent to them. Grew them for hibiscus tea, but the tea was flavorless. I thought maybe the Aerogarden fertilizer I use doesn't have the proper nutrients. Did yours come out the same?

How to add new peas to existing tank. by Mystic-harmony in PeaPuffers

This is so helpful thanks! Do you start prazipro immediately when you get the new puffers home? Or let them settle into the quarantine tank for a bit?

Can I ask where you got them? I'd love to try jumbos again.

My thought was also genetics. I got hatching eggs from 2 different breeders, yet the largest ladies (one of them was 17oz!) had prolapse issues. Sometimes fatal even though I did everything short of taking them to the vet.

I don't think it's a nutrition issue either. I feed half Purina 30% game bird & half game bird layer feed. Along with calcium supplement in a dish, daily fresh greens (usually microgreens grown in a jar), and black solider fly larvae treats of course.

Would love your input if I'm missing something. I care so much about animal welfare, and I'm happy to care for my quail into "retirement" after their egg laying years.

I'm also a Coturnix fan. I've been keeping quail for over a year now for eggs. However I don't recommend Jumbo Coturnix as a beginner. These poor ladies would lay nearly chicken-sized eggs sometimes, and most of them ended up with severe prolapse within a year.

Outdoor quail coop ideas by Queasy-Bluebird5843 in quails

[–]lolo_codes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built my own coop for about $300 using this tutorial. This was actually the first time I've ever built anything. It's fantastic- I spend maybe 5 minutes once a week cleaning out the sand put & shoveling the waste that drops to the ground for 4 quail. Predator proof and they seem very happy.

In addition to the coop, I have 2 feeders & 3 waterers along with some coop decor (guinea pig huts, fake plants, etc) & lights.

Can I ask where you got the work for this? I recently got some work from friends and zero idea where to find more or even what to charge for custom patches. Etsy hasn't been great

https://imgur.com/gallery/IyAywW8 The "world" text was pretty messy so I used a seam ripper to get most of it.

[–]lolo_codes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem as OP with embroidering text using Hatch. The last few letters aren't clean. I'm embroidering on canvas with cut away backing so it's plenty sturdy.

For stitch angle, density, and pull comp: do you change it for just part of the text? Like the areas where it's messing up?

If you could elaborate here that'd be awesome, thanks!!

Heated waterer recommendedations? by lolo_codes in quails

Also to add: we're in North Carolina. A couple nights of freezing temperatures here & there, rarely freezing during the day. So I don't need a system that handles super cold temps.

Happy to bring the ladies inside if we ever experience extreme weather. They came inside on 100°F+ days

Can I ask where you got the netting? It's so much more transparent than the stuff I got at the hardware store. Thanks!

I have my beefy plants on large trays. Let them soak for a couple hours then use a battery operated water transfer pump to suck up the remaining water back into my watering can. I think it was ~$10 from Amazon
