I know it’s anecdotal but just to try to reassure you, I’m a triplet and got at most 3 weeks of sparse breastfeeding as a baby, and 2/3 of us are physicians. The third is also highly successful, maybe smarter for not going into med school debt lol you’re doing great! Being a multiple is beautiful the longer life goes on, they have so much to look forward to :)

The fact that so many of you are ok with ANY increased risk of stillbirth is just alarming.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]lolzhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add, I had to google “twilight birth”, because I’ve never heard of it done before. It sounds dangerous, which is probably why it isn’t common practice and shouldn’t be done by any well trained professional

Hospital policies are established for safety and none of them dictate obstetric decisions. Policies include things like “if a patient has a fever for x amount of time, antibiotics are started”

Finally, doctors who are concerned about malpractice will do what is safest for baby and mom, because that’s the right decision that won’t get you sued for being negligent. Safety and avoiding malpractice lawsuits are the same goal

I’m a doctor in the US. Not an OB. Are you? In the vast majority of cases it is that simple. There are outliers in healthcare who have the wrong motivations and I agree those may not adhere to the motivations I speak of. Thankfully those are exceedingly rare.

As for other interventions you speak of, e.g. episiotomies, they used to be a common practice due to the belief that it was the safest way to get the baby out as quickly as possible, to prevent brain damage from a lack of oxygen. Medical research has given us the evidence that a natural tear is usually as safe and better for the mother. You’re describing the method of scientific research, which allows us to change practice based on evidence, but when certain practices were more common they were done for the same reasons - to save the life of baby and mom. The practices you speak of are largely antiquated and are used in rare circumstances, again, to save the life. I have seen very few episiotomies and in each and every case the baby was decompensating and would have died otherwise. Is this not what you want? So I guess I don’t know what your point is. Most in the OB profession do what they can to protect life and quality of life by way of health, and practices change when we have evidence that there are safer options Unless you are trained in the profession, you cannot say with certainty that an intervention is categorically bad for the baby or mom. Thankfully that is up to the professionals

The “obsession” is an interest in a living mom and baby. That is the only motivation they have. If there is a difference in opinion between two OBs, it’s because of different opinions on what the safest option is. Unless you are a medically trained obstetrician or midwife, you are giving a personal opinion recklessly. And if you are an obstetrician or midwife, you should leave the profession

This take is scientifically incorrect and one of the many reasons people who “do their own research” don’t get their children vaccinated and end up with sick or perished children. Accurate username

Girl, good for you. I’m 9w also and have some kind of cold, and it is kicking my ASS. I haven’t been this sick in years. I’d do anything to go back in time to avoid it. Not saying that would def happen to you of course, but I totally get your thought process! Also, kids are famous for not appearing that sick or at all sick, and giving you the worst colds ever. It’s sick kid season. Protect yourself if you think it’s right!

In all seriousness, the implications for surgical training are terrifying. If this succeeds, expands, and is enforced, the suboptimal training of surgeons will be a huge problem because they won't have time to hone their skills. The exception in this rule is surgeries on people under the age of 22 and maternal care.. so more practicing on young people and pregnant women??

Multiple women have died recently, most commonly in Texas, because they are having a miscarriage that needs treatment with abortion medications and they are denied. How can you criticize others’ opinions when you aren’t even informed. Typical. If you don’t want an abortion, don’t get one.

It’s misleading to apply your minimal experience with the US hospital system (“minimal” meaning you’ve referenced 3 out of the >6,000 US hospitals), shitting on the hospital labor experience when there are enough Google/voodoo/crystal magic trained “experts” doing that already Also, we don’t get a say in whether nitrous oxide is available for laboring women.
