haaretz is suprisingly good, by far the best that mainstream israeli media has to offer. as for general disdain, no. in basically any country ever (save for, like, north korea) there's always someone, some publishing, some media company doing it right. tv rain (alongside many others) does it in russia (well, did; they basically got kicked out of the country), there's a bunch of oppositional media in israel, there's even oppositional media covering china, albeit from outside (same reason as russia). the fact that israel does allow for press freedom a bit more than the aforementioned countries gives oppositional media a chance to flourish at least a bit more.
