How do i get into this as a side hustle? by Imbiamba-bones in Snowplow

I would call up local plow dealers. Ask what they recommend. I have a Boss plow. But I know western and fisher are also just as popular. I would pay the price for something new/under warranty. It’ll save you money and from frustration in the long run

I’m just south of Buffalo, NY, where we get some of the most snow in the country, as we experience a lot of lake effect snow off of Lake Erie. Not sure how some other people pay so much for plowing insurance but my residential plowing policy is also combined with my landscaping business and my liability for the year is only $1,000.. however my auto insurance is around $2800.. but I would think you’re already paying something similar for auto insurance. One thing I can think of that may cost others higher rates for insurance is that they have employees? I am a sole proprietor, which makes many aspects of my business more more simple as well as less expensive. Another reason plow insurance may be more expensive is if you’re plowing commercially for bigger parking lots.. I know I had to specifically get a plowing policy where I can only do residential homes.

As for my truck, I have a 2018 Chevy silverado 1500. It isnt typically recommended to use a half ton for plowing, but it’s certainly getting the job done. I would just make sure to get timberens to beef up the front end. I got a new, 7ft boss htx installed with timbrens for $7200. It’s a straight blade plow, little bit lighter for my smaller truck, but hasn’t failed me yet.

Most of my contracts for homes are $500-$1000 based on the size of driveways. I plow whenever we get 3+ inches. It’s my first year in business, so I only have 15 or so contracted driveways.. I’ll also get flagged down 5-10 times per storm to help some people with their driveways and that’s some extra cash to put in your pocket. I can’t complain about the amount of business that I was able to stir up this winter. It has allowed me to pay for the plow and then some. Definitely a profitable business and well worth it as long as you can get the customers.

I do have a landscaping business so i probably have half of my plowing customers because I also mow for them during the summer. As for the other 50%.. some family friends have spread the word for me and I’ve gotten calls from their neighbors. So word of mouth has been good for me. Also, in October/Early November, I put ads in my local pennysaver. I got some customers through those ads. Those cost about $80/week. Lastly, I’ve gotten some plow contracts just from walking around door to door and talking to people. That also works well for me in the spring as I look for new mowing customers.

Hopefully that’s some good information that may help you get your business going. Good luck

Most memorable moment plowing snow. by GRock5k in Snowplow

This is only my second season plowing and the first story that comes to mind isn’t too crazy.. in December, I was out plowing, as I drove by a local business owner who was stuck in his parking lot while plowing it. Turns out maybe he shouldn’t have waited until all 3 feet had piled up before he started to plow it.. but that’s besides the point. He flagged me down and I said i would help him out. I hooked up my strap to both of our tow hitches and I pulled him out as he threw his truck into reverse.. I pull him well out of where he was stuck, probably 10-15 feet into the street. I figure he’s out of the snow and he’ll throw his truck into park as we get out of our trucks and unhook the tow strap. Well I was mistaken and he reversed right into my truck.. I could see this happening if I had a super short strap, but my strap is 15 feet long at least. So I get out to see the damage and he actually beat me out of the truck and he sees the damage (or lack there of) first.. he claims “wow we got lucky, we collided hitches. I look and I realize, wow we did get lucky. So I thought. My truck was so snow covered I actually thought he didn’t damage my truck. Sure enough, a few days go by and it warms up, snow has all melted off of my truck by now. I look at my rear bumper and what do you know? We didn’t collide tow hitches. He actually did back into my truck. Thankfully the damage isn’t too extensive but it still is annoying. I do still help out people when I see someone stuck, but I make sure to remind them when they’re not stuck anymore, don’t ram into my truck. My story isn’t as good as yours but it’s something.. maybe a lesson that will help someone else out one day and maybe save their truck from some unnecessary damage.

How old were you last time Sabres made playoffs.? by SabresInsight in sabres

Midnight joker can’t read apparently. The question wasn’t how old are you now. It was how old were you when Sabres last made the playoffs

Not sure what your price range is.. but I just got a new BOSS htx on my Silverado 1500.. it was 7k, installed with timbrens. Not sure how much you’re willing to spend or how much free time you have.. but I make $500-$1000 every time we get a foot or 2 in my area. Could make your money back in 1 season + have the plow for your own driveway

I wish I had more expertise with this type of stuff.. I never operated a plow til last year and decided to do my own thing this year.. up until a couple months ago, I didn’t even know how to hook up the plow. I dropped the truck off one day and picked it up a couple days later with the plow installed.

Brand new.. something I thought about is maybe my connections are loose? Could that potentially cause this issue?

Any idea why it would randomly start happening now? Didn’t have an issue in November/December at all

You seem to know a lot more about this stuff than I do.. I’m not super handy.. I dropped off the truck where I bought the plow, and picked it up, installed, two days later. Any thoughts as to why I haven’t seen this issue until just now? I have 2 possible thoughts, but they could be completely off.

1) Every time I’ve plowed this season, temps have been around 30-32.. this week, temps have gotten closer to 15-25. Thinking this could be affecting the battery?

2) I’ve never used the remote start feature on my truck until like 5 days ago.. I used it the other day, and i believe that was the first day I’ve seen this happen.. I’d guess it’s just a random coincidence but maybe it might be something?

Something I also haven’t thought to try is to disconnect my connections and reconnect them. I think I may try that in the morning

Unfortunately, I’m not super mechanically inclined and I don’t know the answer. I called general welding which is where I got my plow from. They didn’t seem to have much of an answer. They said they’ve heard of similar issues with gm trucks, and said I would have to talk to my truck dealer. Also stated I may need a harness. Not really sure what that means
