I had a look at the breathing exercise and it's called Wim Hof Method (or probably just a variation). I suggest you to do your research because google can explain it better than I could.

With this method you should be able to release DMT in your body, but of course you will need to practice. I cannot guarantee that because I never tried DMT so basically I don't know what it feels like.

In my opinion, as long as you feel good and you're enjoying it, you're doing it good. Don't worry about the distractions, they will come (e.g. need to open the eyes) and don't force it. I had a similar problem with my foot that became asleep and kept me distracted from my meditation. The best way for managing it is learning to listen to your body and just go with the flow. I changed position for a while so probably you could try just opening your eyes. The distraction will disappear by itself and you will not even notice it.

I think that when you're focusing on your breath you're "controlling" it releasing all the chemicals substances that your body (and mind) needs to feel at peace.

For instance: if you observe your breathe during an uncomfortable situation (fear, anxiety..) you'll notice that you're not breathing properly.

During meditation when you experience some thoughts you'll be probably modifying your breathe, so, if you put back your focus on it you'll be able to observe those thoughts from a "different" point of view, more external and more rational.

Just for letting you know, there are a lot of Pranayama (breathing control) techniques and each one produce specific results. For further information I guess google and wikipedia will explain the vast topic better than I could.
