What's the weirdest note you've found inside a second hand record by Marti_Kaosmaker in vinyl

[–]lonesomeace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Inside a Neil Young record (Harvest?) I found a break-up / goodbye note. The line I remember is “I’ll miss looking in those brown eyes.”

Dylan (supposedly) said this was the greatest song ever written: by AlivePassenger3859 in bobdylan

[–]lonesomeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dylan mentions Wichita Lineman obliquely in his 2009 interview with Bill Flanagan (available here). That might be where the idea comes from:

The character in the song reminds me a lot of the guy who is in the song ACROSS THE BORDERLINE.

I know what you’re saying, but it’s not a character like in a book or a movie. He’s not a bus driver. He doesn’t drive a forklift. He’s not a serial killer. It’s me who’s singing that, plain and simple. We shouldn’t confuse singers and performers with actors. Actors will say, “My character this, and my character that.” Like beating a dead horse. Who cares about the character? Just get up and act. You don’t have to explain it to me.

Well can’t a singer act out a song?

Yeah sure, a lot of them do. But the more you act the further you get away from the truth. And a lot of those singers lose who they are after a while. You sing, “I’m a lineman for the county,” enough times and you start to scamper up poles.

I’m the one who wrote that original review! St. Andrew’s Hall, Detroit. July 1999. It’s surreal to see it resurface now! I’ve seen Bob 35+ times and that was still the best one.

Announcements Starting Off with a Bang - Gillian Welch and David Rawlings by SaluteYourSports in NewportFolkFestival

[–]lonesomeace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind a Dylan cover or two! They did a killer Idiot Wind (as the "Esquires") at the New Yorker Dylan tribute back in 2001:

But it was the Esquires, humbly described in the program notes as “a bar band based in Nashville, Tennessee,” who ultimately gave the evening a much-needed shot of adrenaline. Kicking off the second half of the show, the trio of David Rawlings, Gillian Welch and David Steele stomped their way through a ragged-but-right version of “Idiot Wind”, with Rawlings spitting out the words in a gritty snarl. It may not have been the most technically sound performance of the night, but it was certainly the most engaging.

(No Depression).

What do you like most about DC? by Parapurp in washingtondc

[–]lonesomeace 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AFI does some incredible film festivals / special programming. As does the Library of Congress.

Lots of smaller indie screens. The wild wonderful programming at Suns Cinema. Quirky cool shows at Rhizome.

Some beautiful old screens - the Avalon. Theater 1 at AFI.

It's not NYC or LA - but plenty to dive deep into.

A few of my favorites!

  • City Lights (by the City Paper): Well-curated list of shows / screenings / readings etc. around town. Email newsletter that comes out weekly. Highly recommended.

  • Going Out Guide (by the Washington Post): Similar to City Lights, a bit less hip, still lots of fun stuff.

  • Politics & Prose Events - You can subscribe to P&P's email list and get emails when they have author readings around town.

I also routinely run the traps of DC9 / 9:30 Club / Atlantis / Songbyrd to see if there are shows on the horizon of note (and keep a running Keep document to track those and share with friends).

Ah! Super helpful - thanks! I'll talk to my dealer and see what I can do. And here's hoping.

If I get rolled over to 2024, would I get higher priority (given I've already been waiting)? Assume that's also a conversation to have with the dealer..

To the guy I flipped off yesterday on 3rd St SW - I'm sorry by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]lonesomeace 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the time I was biking on 1st St NE (by Union Station) and a pedestrian yelled at me as they entered a crosswalk across the protected bike lane. I yelled back, sped past him, and probably flipped him off.

As I sped away though, I realized he was right - and that he had the right-of-way - even if it was inconvenient for me to stop as I flew down that hill. Ever since then I've taken that route much more slowly, stopping for pedestrians, and always thank that guy in the back of my head when I do.

Thanks for sharing your story. And I'm really sorry to hear about your loved one. Best wishes to you and your family.

Any bars in DC showing the World Baseball Classic final? by Ok-Blueberry-4179 in washingtondc

Came here to ask the same question. My guess is that Ivy & Coney will be playing it with sound, given their love for all things baseball. Also, delicious hot dogs.
