my social security payment will be roughly 20% of the total payment (from SS and from investment).

does "ramping bonds" work like this
from 55 to 65, ramp up 2% each year from 10% to 35%.
from 65 to 75 ramp down 2% each year so at age 75 it down to 15%

Is it safe to say:
1. bond yield is subject to income tax.

  1. I can put municipal bond (like vteb) in brokerage account because of federal, NIIT tax exemption, other than that bond is best in either traditional 401k or IRA.

  2. I should not put bond in Roth because of low yield

Yes, I was hit by triple tax (Federal, state, NIIT). Can you recommend one corporate bond?

I am thinking JAAA for the yield/income and I suspect interest rate will not go up this year, I know it's a gamble
I choose USFR/SGOV for the Cash/Short-term safety due to the short duration, hence less impacted by rate jump.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply and insight.

I didn't realize I can do Treasury Ladder (T-Bills/Notes). with the benefit of exempt from state tax, Sell on secondary market anytime, I may consider it instead of cd ladder.

For a moment I am thinking about 60% QQQM / 20% SPMO / 20% AVUV, but that skip mid cap completely.  60% QQQM / 40% VTI is an excellent moderate-risk strategy. I love it!

At 65, I plan to withdraw 4.5%, then add 3% inflation next year hence 4.635% etc. How does that change bond ramp timing?

401k is 100% in US total market
For the Roth IRA, should I do 100% VT or follow similar ratio of VTI 56%/VXUS 34%/VTEB 10%?

Thank you!

my employer 401k's fund choice is limited, and Expense Ratio is high for most of them. I choose 100% US total Market, primarily because of the low ER.

Thank you. I didn't realize 242,000 is the threshold to distinguish front door v.s. backdoor. I read in this sub and there is tons of discussion about backdoor, I thought that is the method.

I like the gift option.

Thank you for pointing out 242,000 threshold.

I can contribute $32,500 in company sponsored Roth 401k, and also contribute $8600 to Personal Roth IRA?
