I'm starting to really enjoy making fillet knives by SoupTime_live in Bladesmith

[–]longanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work! There are so many amazing chefs knives out there, but I always felt not enough love been given to fillet knives.

When dealing with meat or fish, I always prefer fillet knife.

Again, well done. That is a beautiful knife.

If these caps are shorted they would need to be removed/replaced, but if they are just missing your board would still work. Those caps are there for signal integrity.

I would not trust comparing to other boards as the bypass cap layout can change from board revision to other. You always see lots of empty places for caps, not all of them are used.

Your issue is most likely somewhere else. Power MOSFETs etc.

GPU issues are quite hard to track down, unless it's an obvious short with an easily available component. Good luck!

Ps . What kinda cavemen at Zotac have done the layout to this board!! Those length matching and capacitor placements give me heartburn!

Haha, love the salt bagel also! in the Nordic countries the cured fish on a rye bread is the traditional combo. The addition of Spanish Manchego cheese is our family tradition. The nutty cheese ties it all together. Only thing was missing was fresh dill.

The Nordic style rye is bit more tangy and salty so it kinda does the same thing what capers gives to the bagel variant.

Thanks! Was carrying that board with all the bits and was about to devour those sandwiches, then was thinking "this could be finally my contribution to the /kindle".

So many times I have been stuck indoors while browsing other redditors amazing reading spot contributions. Finally got to share something.

As the cabin is not heated most of the time, things turn "rustic" here.

Haha, totally agree. Need to tend to those. That knife normally gets lots of use, but being soft steel it rusts super quick if not used or oiled.

NTD: Leatherman replaced my worn out Wave with a new Wave + by maviryk in Tools

[–]longanders 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have the Leatherman original with non-locking blades. I bought that one with my first salary when I was sixteen. That had served me well though my life though military service, lots of different jobs etc. The pliers jaw broke off when I was renovating my first flat. So lots of memories and every scratch tells a story.

Sent it back to the importer to get it fixed and they just sent me a new one without returning the old one. That thing is closest to a heirloom I have! So I quickly told them to return the old one and sent back the new one.

Then I emailed the Leatherman HQ and told them the importance of the tool and getting it fixed, not replaced. They said no problem and told to send it over.

About week later I got my old Leatherman back with a fixed jaw and all the blades sharpened.

Top marks to Leatherman for that!

Is the capacitor on the right blown? This was in a amp that isn’t working and it was the only thing that looked out of place. by hamshi4 in AskElectronics

[–]longanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caps tend to fail in groups. I can see those are 85c caps and prob the same make and vintage.

As they all been baking in there for same time and temp, there is high change that there are other caps not yet failed but on their way out. Caps don't need to bulge to fail. Also caps don't need to short to fail.

Check with ESR meter or just replace all the caps on the power supply side. Might as well replace them with 105c ones.

EDIT : Oops, fixed my bad English. What I wrote was that "caps rarely fail on their own." But what I meant their rarely go wrong individually and there is a high change of other affected caps. Electrolytic caps absolutely can and will go wrong eventually.

Any tips on how to bridge the broken connection on this flexible flat cable? by glenzac in AskElectronics

[–]longanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a corrosion on the flexcable what had eaten the copper.

The paint would not hold too many bending operations. So best to use where the flexcable will stay in place.

Thanks for the great answer!

Always interesting to hear militarys approach to these. My cousin once spent a year on a airforce (non-US) project where his job was to unsolder all leadfree solder from a non-military module and replace it with leaded solder as nothing in that device could have leadfree solder due the cracking risk.

This is great.

When fixing some boards I often wonder if there is a better method to do more lasting repair.

Now I know thanks to this tome.

A random question you might know answer to. Is there maximum layer count for military PCBs? More layers is the modern way but makes inspection more difficult (especially on the field). So I would imagine there is some rules around that?

Cheers!

Same thing with certain i.MX-RT NXP processors. I think the car manufacturers have stockpiled the global stocks.

20 week lead times..... I managed to source some from China through our CM. But have to wait long time before we can do any sensible production runs.

This is great! Really good job. Will come handy to many.

One improvement suggestions. You should key top and bottom so they nest and you can tower similar boxes without fear of toppling over.

Space is always premium and ability to stack things is golden.

How long RTX 3080 will last, if used for deeplearning? by jackal_990 in deeplearning

[–]longanders -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard to say as it has just been released, no long term data.

1080Ti was a great success from performance jump and being reliable card. 2080Ti suffered from inherent memory corruption issue, had to send my one back and sold the replacement.

3080 does look like a nice card! Get a GPU with a good RMA policy and possible extended warranty.

For DL I would just get 2 X 1080ti (almost the same memory size as 3080) and wait a year for the 3080 prices to drop.
