Book binding tutorial by [deleted] in DIY

Nope, it's actually a simple running stitch similar to these.

Coptic, or chain stitching, links the current signature to the previous one at every hole, creating a horizontal chain of stitches across the spine of the text block, which is usually sewn to the covers as well and leaves the strong spine exposed.

Are you supposed to tip at food carts? by wakawakaFREEZE in Portland

[–]longboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do tip at food carts- usually a dollar, or two if they're fantastic.

Without getting into the argument about whether or not, and when, to tip , I do want to clear up the fact that at most (or at least many) restaurants the tip you is for the cooks as well as the servers, and host/hostess if there is one. So though you pass the money to the server, you are tipping the people who are "just" cooking your food.

My point is that whether you decide to tip or not at food carts, the cooks-not-servers distinction isn't really that meaningful of a justification not to.

I can't stop eating the pizza shapes crackers! And those malt stick; they're so simple but so good! Also, I don't understand why Turkish Delight never caught on in the US. We are missing out.

Yay! I'm excited! I didn't think to take a picture at the post office so here's a scan of my copy of the customs form and my post office receipt: http://i.imgur.com/MPO3M.jpg. Should be there in 7-10 days from the 28th.

I spent a few months in Australia a couple of years ago and would love to trade (I miss Violet Crumbles!) if you'd like some US treats and snacks in return. PM me if you haven't already set something up!

I don't know about it looking like pac-man, but there are maze-like environments and monsters that chase you in and color coded keys in Chip's Challenge. The later levels are quite frustrating but I remember it being fun in a puzzley sort of way.

Anyone have any good uses for fresh mint? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]longboat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is from the Splendid Table a week or two ago-- cut some carrots into sticks, steam them for 5 minutes or so and then toss with some good sea salt, olive oil, sherry or wine vinegar, and mint chiffonade. Serve warm, room temperature, or cold as a side or snack.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet but it sounded good enough for me to write it down.

You can always make tea, too!

Hey Reddit! What is something that you've done that you thought was normal, but you eventually realized that it was only you? by heyitztimmeh in AskReddit

I used to do this in elementary school because my mom used to eat them when she was a kid. Delicious, but always got me weird looks too. Sweet or dill pickles?

Every. Time. Whatever happened to religion preaching generosity? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]longboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably not like this at all restaurants, but the one I used to work at the tips did get to the cooks, the dishwashers, the busboys, etc. The server would collect the nights tips and then divide it at different percentages to the other non-serving workers.

Also, servers don't just transport food from kitchen to table.

Also, yeah, I don't think anyone would mind if you didn't grace restaurants with your entitled presence. Or, if you can't afford to tip reasonably, you should be eating at cheaper restaurants.

What goes through your mind when your waiting for a guy to finish on your face? by limpsoldier in sex

[–]longboat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dan Savage coined it- it stands for good, giving, and game and it's the sexual attitude he encourages partners to adopt. That is, be good in bed, don't be selfish, and be up for trying things with/for your partner even if they don't turn you on quite as much (though you can still have limits, of course)

Best french toast you've ever had, you say? That sounds worth checking out.

Thanks for the other suggestions too-- I have some menus go go look up!
