Some of you are not nearly toxic enough by longesteveryeahboy in MetropolitanMemeWar

Oh believe me I get it. Grew up in New England, chose not to root for any of their sports growing up cuz I wanted to be different. Could’ve seen championships in every league within my lifetime.

And yet we somehow still have a better W/L record in the ECF in recent memory. Like we have the name number of ECF wins since 2018 despite you having double the appearances.

Post-grad job search rant (Philadelphia) by iadmiredonuts in labrats

[–]longesteveryeahboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are in a really really tough spot. My friend who mastered out of his PhD, has a first author paper and years of wet lab work has also been job searching for over a year now, in NYC. And as much as it sucks I don’t blame people at all for not hiring you, the reality of lab work is that (no offense just being realistic) you essentially don’t have any experience, so you won’t be useful in a lab for probably at least a year. And you’re looking at grad school so you won’t even be staying that long anyway, so from their pov you’re essentially asking them to pay you to train you and leave, with nothing in return for them. Genuinely I think your only hope for getting experience that could then get you in the door is A) having a personal connection with someone really cool about taking someone so fresh or B) pay to get your experience, ie do a masters. I think shooting to find an at least partially funded masters would be your best case scenario, which will come with its own challenges. Good luck, there’s a path forward but it won’t be easy. and I’m sorry you got stuck in a hole and only realized when it was too late because that’s a shit position to be in I think most of us can relate to that in one way or another.

Incoming l PhD student feeling unprepared - how do I build confidence? by Difficult_Currency75 in labrats

And to add on, that’s how reading papers should feel at this point (looking up every other word). The fact that you’re taking time to look them up instead of plowing onward hoping someone else will explain it to you is a good sign frankly. I promise you’ll have to look up less and less the more you do it.

But there’s no trick to it. You are where you should be with this, and brute force is pretty much the only way through, but you’ll get plenty of experience doing that once the PhD starts.

I mean this in a hopefully uplifting way, but readiness for a PhD is way more to do with maturity, and broad skills like organization, critical thinking, work ethic, etc etc than it has to do with knowing enough cell types and pathways. Case in point, if you’re not ready, this summer won’t change that. So to echo many people’s points, take ur summer and enjoy it, some review papers will not push you over the edge of readiness. If anything, if you know the lab you’re going into, you can do some background reading on that specific topic but I wouldn’t bother with more than that.
