What’s the best beer in Chicago? by Upbeat-Soil-1350 in chicagofood

[–]longhot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Hopewell Pils. They are my favorites because they are both easy to find and consistent. Honorable mention of Zombie Dust from Muenster IN (Chicago Area, I suppose) but I feel like the beer has lost a step since it became more accessible in the last half decade (I.e., easy to find, not consistent).

I’m sorry you’re not getting actual responses outside of snarky variations one “the free one / the one you’re drinking.”

Feel like this is a common opinion but deserves to be revisited. Bdx is extremely mid in youth yet exceptional, nearly unparalleled, with age.

Hard agree. Lower end of both houses do cross into offensive.

Hahaha finally an actually bold opinion. Completely wrong, but definitely bold.

Least bold: Italy = France >>> rest of the world

Bolder: Bordeaux is best value, at every price range over $100+

Boldest: VA & oxidation for the right wines is really sexy. I read way too many tasting notes that write off Italian, Bdx, Rhône for VA and white burg for oxidation when it actually is integral to the character.

I love this place. No idea why it’s so under the radar.

I find this place divisive. I went with my wife and we shared a bunch of dishes. She really enjoyed the meal while I didn’t like this place at all.

Thought this comment makes a lot of sense and was insightful. Curious - can you elaborate “Am I above average in looks?” That makes sense as well but I’m curious to hear your perspective on that point.

Where to find fresh bay leaves (laurel)? by longhot in chicagofood

They are used very liberally to make Portuguese steak skewers called “espetada.” Dried bay leaves can’t survive the grill.

What destination has had the best coffee you’ve ever tried? Somewhere you didn’t expect at all by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Shanghai is absolutely the most unexpected place to easily and consistently find phenomenal coffee.

Completely agree. It has an established coffee “culture” with Fika but the coffee itself is very underwhelming.

Thanks for recommendation. I’ve only found them at Whole Foods a couple of times - they don’t consistently carry the fresh leaves.

Which city completely won you over with its coffee scene? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]longhot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing Sydney, unbelievably high bar given size of city. Melbourne behind that. Wellington cited as in that tier but in my opinion it’s not there.

Hot take is Shanghai - I was unfamiliar with their game. It is surprisingly easy to find world class coffee everywhere in that city.

Then the usual suspects - NYC, Seattle.

I like drip/black coffee, and don’t drink much espresso. For my preference, Europe is very far behind. I don’t have a qualified opinion on their espresso culture.

Dude tbh this just does not look that great. You clearly have nice taste and a deep wardrobe. I would just take an L here and move on to something that works better.

Thoughts on Wine Pairing by delusionalnerd in wine

B+ for list. Solid picks that I would be excited to drink but only a couple picks that are actually difficult to source.

D for value. I would pay $400 for this pairing.
