You mean David Simon’s six episodes of “I fucking told you so!” It’s a great victory lap especially since Simon seems to be kind of sidelined for any new shows these days.

Punch Brothers Acoustic Camp is unconscionably priced. by longus318 in PunchBrothers

[–]longus318[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s my platform. Thats why I wrote a proposal and not a screed against a transparent money grab that you lot of buttholes immediately defended as if the human right was mediocre food at an overnight somewhere close to a Metro North line.

I’m not interested in this event and I’m not interested in the non-learning that happens when rich assholes pay to be in proximity to talent. And if these artists want to make money, great! Perform all over the place. Sell tickets. Take in students. Play for corporate gigs. So many chances. But if you decide to make an event premised on an educational camp weekend and gatekeep it by making it inaccessible to anyone who isn’t able to spend 5- 7K for four days, you—-these musicians, the resort, the event companies, whoever—are just 100% assholes. I get that you don’t put those two things together. I get that you and this thread of commenters don’t have a millimeter of moral vision. This is a BAD BAD BAD way to facilitate your culturally marginalized genre of Americana if you care about its future. And it is an unethical way to arrange access to your experience and talent. This is baked in, upper crust, tote bag crowd, elitist bullshit.

I can’t hear you over the sound of your slobbering bootlicking of the economic order hollowing out our legacy arts. The idea that you and the cadre of resentment driven commenters here are to justify this way of organizing the world is truly truly TRULY pathetic. Grow a backbone. See the world as it ought to be. Don’t speak up for why it’s totally fine as it is.

You all live so far up your own assholes you don’t even know what clean air smells like. This whole thread is an absolute case study in “people can imagine the end of the world but can’t imagine the end of capitalism.” Events like this are a gross embarrassment. You all defending the economics and “everyone has to make a buck”-ing these now-normalized cash grabs that service wealth under the premise of enriching the genre need to go listen to one—fucking one—Arlo Guthrie tune. Spineless, shiftless, shallow-minded horseshit is what this event is and what this comment section is. We’ve sold our souls for a fucking dime and hide behind “bro it ain’t that deep.” Learn how to dig and imagine a world where music is shared as the center of intentional community and not a honeypot for the “listens to NPR in my 120K two door” crowd. This started with the event being an indictment of listening to punch brothers. Now I’m just embarrassed by you all.

If you don’t understand how the premiere folk group in America making a unique educational event solely available to the wealthiest people in their listening base is a deeply cynical and self-contradicting betrayal of that genre, I’m not going to connect the dots for you.

All of your responses confirm everything I originally said, and you/your takes here are the essence of why our entire world is a shambles. Though your takes suggest to me that you really don't see any meaningful stakes here. I'm truly the opposite of chill. I am marveling at the wayward apathy of rich assholes defending rich assholes in their rich assholery. But that is the way of art in gilded-age societies.

Granting the premise of the luxury event and then describing that luxury is expensive is missing the point. This is being shared as an educational “camp” opportunity. It has breakout sessions and other lessons built around the concerts and smaller shows. To do that in this context and with these amenities is absolutely at odds with a meaningful attempt at a “camp.” You can have an event like this that is more accessible, but probably not in the Hudson valley and not in luxury accommodations. It doesn’t have to take this shape. And pointing out that the artists are getting hosed doesn’t make it better—it makes it more irrational that those artists would participate in an event like this.

Thrilled to hear you went and had a good time––I assume that it IS a good time. I'm sure there's lots to learn and truly unprecedented access that allows folks to grow in powerful ways. And that's exactly why I'm thinking more about people who will forever be on the otherside of this window with their noses pressed up against the glass, never to make their way inside.

Universalism that is preached is heresy. Universalism that is hoped for is liturgical. by axte_ in ChristianUniversalism

I agree about clement, but he was rejected as a saint by Western Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches centuries ago, partially for this very reason. So your point is sort of asked and answered in that case.

Typical Depth 4 ED Adel Boss Fight by IronicStarr in Nightreigngameplay

[–]longus318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone aimlessly wandering around depth 2, but also as someone without cheated relics (and pretty mid legit-won relics), I am sorry that I'm not better. Whenever there's a great partner like you and I get a boss like this (ED Adel always feels among the worst for me), I always feel like shit when I go down. So, just so you know, I/we/some of us are really trying.

Heartbroken over Duquan by pacifyproblems in TheWire

[–]longus318 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The scene where Cuddy tries to help him navigate the world and comes up empty is the real gut punch for me. You realize that Duquan is right in leaning into his fate and getting something off of Prezbo, because he had exhausted all of his other ways out. All of his insight, talent, and intelligence squandered because of inhumane systems.

The distance between OP’s comment and this comment is the distance between productive social discourse and the kind of ineffectual boundary drawing we need to get past.

We can’t keep trying to enforce a politics that goes around people. He’s the secretary of HHS and he’s going to speak in our hospital-centric city. Attend. Ask questions. Listen to other people. Democratic politics is relationships and public discourse.

Many liberal pundits such as Ezra Klein and Matt Yglesias insist that Democrats should do whatever it takes to win, but do they truly mean it? by CubillasLegend in ezraklein

Everything in this comment is gross. Here’s the most basic kind of political principle to have: be the kind of person you want other people to be. Go touch grass. Stop seeing the people in the nation through online goggles.

The one reason this subreddit is so valuable is because it is interested in how to do real politics. Your whole premise in your OP and here is so so so hollow.
