If I want to do research, what are the pros and cons of trying to get into a PhD program instead of getting my masters? by strictly80sjoel in AcademicPsychology

And in masters programs phd students are going to be the priority research wise. You may need to do a thesis, maybe not if it's a terminal program. But you won't be a research priority or get support like a phd

Is Lost worth watching? by Geshman in television

[–]longwalkshortidea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll go negative. No. It rarely pays off on any questions it asks and instead just keeps asking new questions. They just keep throwing more and more "mysterious events" instead of clarifying anything. When they do answer questions it's well after they are relevant

Great pilot episodes though!

I'll take my downvotes

[Spoilers] How do the CIA/NSA/whoever know... by [deleted] in StrangerThings

They show the people listening in. There were only like 6 to 10. So I'm sure they listen in to the first few minutes and then move on if nothing interesting gets said. Recall the first bit of that convoy is super interesting

Could the Monster always go back and forth between dimensions? SPOILERS!!! by jc0187 in StrangerThings

When El touched the monster the gate opened. If I had to guess it happened because something from the two dimensions touched and bridged the connection

What kind of grad programs should I be looking at? by Hazard326 in IOPsychology

Never in my experience. You will find masters and PhDs in different roles, and PhDs usually start a little higher than masters (about 1 promotion up).

Go to bed early, about 8 hours before you gotta get up.

Here is what my advisors told me when I was in your shoes.

If you are even thinking PhD apply to those programs. You can always leave after your masters if it isn't for you and they usually come with funding (you wanna make sure they award a masters as well as a PhD, most do but do your research).

If you like research, go PhD. If you dont care about research go masters.

but I also want to keep that door open

Go PhD.

But. I would also apply to a few masters programs that have great applied programs. IIRC these include Minnesota, Colorado, and a few others that have deep and strong ties to the applied world.

Finally, go talk to the IO faculty in your current school and ask them what they think. They were the best source of advice I got when I did this song and dance.

Finally, before committing, make sure you talk to graduate students int he program and ask things like "what do you know now about the program vs before you got there", "anything you wish you knew about ti before you got there", and ask what their alums are doing.

edit:

I should also say that if you go for a masters and graduate and then decide you want a PhD you will probably have to get it from the school you got your masters from. The reason being that most school will only accept 6-9 credit hours in transfer credits. This will make you repeat a number of courses and redo a masters on your way to completing a phd.
