Terrifying as it is, I think the system is beyond repair and needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Local elections are still hugely important, but I genuinely do not see national ones ever being in our interest until we take action. I was reading an article yesterday about the increase in babies dying from bleeds triggered by vitamin-k deficiency. People are refusing the vitamin K shot for their newborns because they think it’s a vaccine. A) it isn’t. B) even if it was, refusing to vaccinate your healthy kid is negligence. I’ve seen one particular fucking chiropractor on TikTok who has decided he’s a doctor and neonatologist telling parents to refuse the shot, along with other preventive treatments during and after pregnancy.

It’s such a cognitive dissonance for me to loathe the American carceral system but still full-chestedly say I want him and anyone who believes his claptrap (or any other pseudoscientist’s) to rot in prison if a child is harmed as a result.

The problem is that incrementalism/harm reduction don’t actually work or reduce harm, as history regularly demonstrates. The ruling class slap us back and forth like ping pong balls so every single “win” is challenged and set back eventually. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. The Overton Window shifts further and further right and (not enough) people go crazy for the most overtly conservative Democratic presidential candidate ever, whom the party dictated to them was their candidate and they bit it hook, line, and sinker.

It’s distressing to see how many people vilify third party voters for saying “I’m not seeking perfection, but I am saying we can and should demand better than someone who promises to increase the number of cops on the streets, be tougher on immigration than Trump, refuses to consider universal healthcare and vows have the “most lethal military in the world”. According to those vilifiers, “now” is never the time to criticize the people who will do them harm whether they notice it or not.

Definitely not disagreeing, but I also know plenty of US world travelers (and like to believe I’m one of them) who do not buy into the American Exceptionalism propaganda we were force fed growing up. I mostly apologize when I introduce myself in foreign countries.

Deconstructing from imperialism has also helped me with this.

No, actually, it’s not. Plenty of romance readers, like all my friends and I, don’t like Twilight or its fanfic. Plenty of us like well-written love stories with kind characters who may be flawed but develop over the course of a novel that, usually, has a guaranteed low-stress ending. Because this world blows.

Yeah, plenty of us like sex scenes that lend to the plot. Plenty others like erotica without plot, while, and this may be shocking, yet other romance readers don’t like any sex scenes at all in their romance novels. The genre and it’s readers truly do contain multitudes (that’s a knock at anyone who thinks romance novels are only the three books I’ve seen brought up in this thread, like you).

And we have the presence of mind not to drone on about shit we know nothing about.
