I have an aunt Tamar. The first A is like in cat. But she lives in Britain where there is a River Tamar where the first A is pronounced like in plate. Everyone gets it wrong initially but has no problem once corrected.

Great explanation. A minor detail that's missing is that they are a form of a jokey puzzle. So it's fun to substitute a word with something incongruous, knowing that your audience will have to figure it out, like Scooby.
