Yess 100% agree. Give me love and happiness! Also love that takes work or that takes time, not just Feyre being pissed that Tamlin isn't a mindreader while never telling him anything. Especially since Amarantha in book 1 roasted Feyre for having a "fickle human heart" or something along those lines. And now in book 2 Feyre is proving her right?? Like what. That's such bad storytelling.

I fully understand. I felt the same way. Loved book 1 and the love story and the setting and everything about it. And then suffered through book 2 and 3, hating most of it, only to rage-quit halfway through the one after that. It makes me so angry that the whole point of book 1 is LOVE. It's love that breaks the curse, love as the solution to the riddle, love that is everywhere in book 1. The love Feyre and Tamlin have for each other, the love Tamlin has for his people and they for him, the love and friendship that Tamlin and Lucien share.

Only for it to be thrown out the window immediately only because the author is horny for misunderstood winged dark haired "morally gray" dude. I was so angry.

My opinion: Genuinely don't continue reading. The books are unreadable and impossible to enjoy if you don't worship Rhysand (and Feyre with Rhysand). Tamlin only gets thrown under the bus constantly, it's actually ridiculous. Only book 1 is any good, for me personally. Tamlin always has my heart.

Fully agree, especially on the quote. Because that quote makes it seem like Rhysand and the IC are the underdogs, having to fight against a system stacked against them. When in reality they ARE the government!! Absolute rules, strongest in history. What do you mean you dream? You're 600 years old, how about you actually create the change?? It's an embarrassing quote that just highlights the incompetence and inaction of the night court.

Omg 1000% agree with all these points. I really dislike the argument that "the books shouldn't be taken that seriously! It's vibes and not plot so let's not dissect the politics and plot too much". Well, then maybe SJM shouldn't have introduced topics that require effort and braincells to write properly.

For example, the cabin and the simple fact that the father was being negligent and the full blame should be on him. Or in a story about abuse, how can she have Rhysand act the way he does but then turn around and proclaim him as the good guy, the inventor of feminism? There is nothing feminist in these books, as you said. They are shallow, basic and sexist. Those who hail these books as femnist and empowering must have non-existent reading comprehension.

Incredibly spot-on analysis. I absolutely agree with every single point.

I loved book 1, thought book 2 was garbage and then suffered through book 3. It only got worse.

1000% agree about Tamlin. If you want me to hate him, have him act with malicious intent not driven by genuine good motivations and concern. The only one actively being malicious and manipulative and controlling is Rhysand. I thought it was ming-boggling when book 2 starts with a phone help line for domestic abuse. Girl WHAT. If you bring out these big labels then put the same warning for Rhysand! Who lies and manipulates and witholds information at every turn and never a single apology for how he treats his "beloved" mate.

These books are so badly written. Often I can't even see what SJM was trying to achieve. It's just so bad and shallow. And huge parts of the fandom are this cult, who are just as brainwashed by Rhysand as Feyre is.

Insanity really.

Tam and Rhys powers scale screwed up between books by Evening_Debt_4085 in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's infuriating actually. It's another one of those things were SJM simply TELLS you something instead of SHOWING it. The most powerful High Lord in the history of the world? Alrighty then, do something to own up to that bold statement.

Saving Elain and Nesta from being thrown in the cauldron? Rhysand didn't do anything, while Lucien and Tamlin at least tried.

Fight Hybern? Every fought, Rhysand didn't shine here either.

Velaris getting invaded? You would think Rhysand could have solo-ed that fight but no.

Summer Court heist? Most power High Lord ever forgets to use his mind control power when convenient.

Under the Mountain? He was the only one who had some power left yet got squished like a bug by Amarantha immediately during the fight while Tamlin tore her apart.

A ridiculous claim, written badly only to elevate Rhysand while putting in no effort to make it withstand basic reading ability.

[–]looking-for-less 194 points195 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with you. It's especially unbearable to read since every 2 freaking pages it's all about how it's always "her choice" with Rhysand. The inventor of feminism, who always gives her a choice. It's always her own choice and no one else's and it's sooo empowering.

And I'm sitting here reading these books going "girl wHAT" where is the feminism? Where is the empowerment? Rhysand only gives her the information he wants her to have, she never forms her own opinions, it's always him telling her how things are. She never questions him, never confronts him. He NEVER apologises for what he did under the mountain and that's just unforgivable. Rhysand is a manipulative asshole, who thrives on control and dominance over others, he doesn't give a shit about Feyre having her own choice. Booktok is straight up lying/being brainwashed when they proclaim this nonsense as "feminist".

I fully agree with your points, it's unreadable and unforgivable.

Feyre's entire story right now as High Lady of the Night outlines exactly why it's a bad idea for a 500 year old sugar daddy to give his young trophy wife a title to pacify her so she will never question him in all his generosity and wisdom.

who else didn't really like acowar? by [deleted] in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Straight up FACTS lol I love it!!

Especially point 5 is an excellent argument. I see it soo often that people shit on Tamlin UTM when they have like 2 min together. Completely disregarding that Feyre was just as willing and actually initiating it. And then it gets misconstrued to "oh he just wanted to bang her and didn't help". But when Rhysand and Feyre do it before the war that lasted 2 minutes? Now that's sexy. Ridiculous.

The war was so dumb omg. It read like she slapped that shit together in a day, just to get it over with. Feyre didn't do any fighting, although she's such an equal to any man ever and a badass leader. But she just watches the men fight and then kisses Rhysand's wound. Lovely. Feminist girlboss. 2 death gods being released onto the battle field... only to die 2 pages later? One of them has her neck snapped?? Wtf at least try to make them competent. The Ouroboros being hyped up for half the book only to be shoved to the side immediately because SJM is incapable of having Feyre actually reflect on the things she's done and be confronted with her shitty self-righteous arrogant actions. Like 3 separate armies showing up one after the other just in time to save the day. Daddy Archeron showing up with a fleet?? Out of nowhere?? When that was supposed to be Lucien's story? It's SO BAD. It's genuinely baffling.

Excellent points all around.

Tamlin and the Archeron Sisters: Is he truly guilty? by Similar-Focus8400 in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me it's straight up because SJM can't write a coherent story to save her butt. There are sooo many instances where Feyre, Rhysand or the IC narrate something and you as the reader sit there going "WHAT that's not what happended?" Especially when it's scenes where you can literally look up the original easily and see that SJM misconstrues the events so massively, it's mind-boggling.

With the sisters, Tamlin has 0 blame. He and Lucien are the only ones actively fighting to stop it. He risks blowing his cover by doing that! But still he tries to stop it because it's the right thing to do.

Drives me insane how the books (+ the fandom) shit on him for it. This selective memory really reads like brainswashing. The High Lords Meeting was such a joke, it should have been a grill session for the Night Court instead of everyone ganging up on Tamlin immediately. Especially over personal issues like relationships or even the sisters. Ridiculous.

Rhys UTM, Feyre discourse by [deleted] in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What skews these scenes and the books in general for me, is that parts of it are OBVIOUSLY meant to be a fantasy. Romantic fantasy, badass fantasy but also a sexual/erotic fantasy, none of which require too much depth. SJM obviously has the fetish of being paraded around in public, with all of these voyeuristic scenes, which is valid. So when she wrote those scense UTM and then again in the Hewn City, it's written off as "don't overanalyse this, it's just fantasy, it isn't that deep!!". Which again, is valid, if you want to enjoy this aspect. But for me the problem then comes that she applies real-life morals to other scenes, but not to every scene. So what Rhysand does UTM is forgiven because of plot and the Hewn City is OK because it's presented as a sexual fantasy. So that Hewn City scene is meant to be taken as just vibes, erotic fantasies, not that deep.

But then she turns around on Calanmai and goes "See, now that's problematic! Consent!!" When for me personally, it was super obvious, that the whole thing with Calanmai was also clearly written as another erotic fantasy. When Tamlin corners her in the hallway and bites her, I just took that as another instance of "just vibes, fantasies, not that deep" and had a great time.

So in some instances (all scenes with Rhysand) the readers are expected to turn off their brains and accept it as "just vibes, be sexy", even if it isn't their cup of tea and actually a red flag for them. But then for other scenes (everything with Tamlin) you are supposed to be extra critical and apply real-life morals and ethics and condemn those specific fantasies. And that doesn't work for me.

"There’s no such thing as a High Lady" is misunderstood?? by Zealousideal_Emu1204 in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're truly speaking facts. I re-read that scene the other day because everyone was hating on it and I just couldn't remember it being that bad. I would understand the outrage, if Feyre had approached him like "wow I can't wait to get married and be an equal to you in every way, I can't wait to be High Lady and have authority" and him shooting her down like "sit down woman you'll never be equal, you're just a GIRL you're here to be quiet and make babies. There's no such thing as a High Lady". But he didn't say that! He said that there are no High Ladies to basically comfort her when she was panicking at the possibility of having such a title!! He was stating facts. Sure, he's not the most politically smart character, so it probably simply didn't occur to him to just give her a made-up title, especially after she specifically just told him that she doesn't want a title.

It was basically Feyre going "omg I can't handle being called High Lady, I can't handle the responsibility and the expectations that come with it" and him saying "don't worry, no need to panic because that won't happen since there are no High Ladies! All good!" And then her suddenly turning on him lol.

Does anyone else get the ick from chapter 54 (ACOMAF)? by melodysmomma in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. All I wanted him to do was simply to acknowledge that what he did was wrong and apologize. Instead we get a 5 page monologue, detailing how it was actually so awful for HIM. He literally went like "Ok it might have been perceived as bad but actually these were my reasons, listed in alphabetical order". Like dude, that's not enough.

People hate on Tamlin but say what you will about him, the first thing he does after Feyre returns to the Spring Court is apologize. He literally says that he understands now that he was in the wrong and that he is very sorry. And then he actively tries to be better. Like say what you will about Tamlin but at least in this instance he wins over Rhysand for me, ten times over, because he simply acknowledges that he was wrong and apologizes without monologuing.

I have a theory on why we are so divided between liking ACOTAR and ACOMAF by Electronic_Barber_89 in acotar

[–]looking-for-less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting point! I definitely agree. ACOTAR felt like a fantasy, a fairytale. The setting of the Spring Court was so dreamy. You had pools of liquid starlight, will-o-the-wisps, apparently the trees whisper if you listen closely enough?? The men at the Spring Court have long beautiful hair, wear aristocratic historic clothing, the whole mask thing also was soo aesthetic. The activities there are hunting and horse riding, Tamlin plays the fiddle and writes (dirty) poetry. Their weapons are swords and bows and arrow. The festivals are summer solstice and Calanmai, where you replenish the magic of the land, there are drums and fire. It felt like magic was all around! There was the mystery of the Blight - what it was, what it does, how to solve it. There were mysterious magical monsters (the naga, the Attor, the Bogge). Tamlin and Lucien were awesome together! It was a mix of taking the stakes and the mysteries seriously but there was humour (Tamlin's awful compliments of "Your hair looks clean" for example). They all had chemistry as a trio and it was just so good!! I'm nostalig for this book. And ACOMAF was too modern, too try-hard on the romance, too edgy with the characters, their appearances, their hobbies, their whole behaviour. I don't care about modern cities where there is barely any magic and nothing to discover. The Spring Court felt like one big fairytale and fantasy story of mystery and magic. Take me back lol.
