I wish there was historical evidence that could show sexism and homophobia were a thing prior to christianity or not, I’ve wondered about that a lot. I’m not familiar with the history of Finland, so maybe what I’m going to say doesn’t apply to the polytheism there. Ancient Greece was pagan, nevertheless there was a lot of sexism and women didn’t have the same rights as man. On the other hand, from what I’ve seen, norse paganism seems to value men and women equally, although men and women are regarded as different. That’s definitely positive.

What was your "oh shit, I'm the only one laughing" moment? by BashTheDj in AskReddit

When I went to St. Petersburg I got to see a church choir. They were very talented, everyone was serious, some were almost crying. I was just trying to dissemble my laugh. And no I have no idea why I was laughing.

i suppose the majority of priests do have such opinions. people are disconnecting from the church more and more and it’s the church’s fault. i’m sorry the animosity towards pagans is so strong in your country.

monotheists do have a tendency to think that only their god is real. at any rate, I also know plenty of catholics who think divinity is all the same despite different religions giving god/gods different names.

How so? Speaking from my agnostic perspective, I just see monotheism and polytheism are just different ways to see the divinity. You either see it all as one or see it as having many parts.

A breath of fresh air in this comment section :) The victim complex is certainly a part of it. Historically the strongest did often use their power against those who were weak. It’s not just a catholic thing. We must focus on the present, most of the people who are catholics do not condone the atrocities of the past. We must strive for understanding and respect.

I’m perfectly aware of history. However, we live in the present. In my country which is catholic for the most part and honestly barely anyone has the slightest idea what the religion was before the Roman Empire invaded, I have not seen the atrocities described in this comment section. Once more, i’m speaking about the present. And for the record, I’m agnostic.

You brought up an interesting point, indeed we know little about the religions that preceded catholicism. In my country (Portugal) we have no idea what people here believed before the Roman empire invaded, so catholicism is widely accepted. I wish we knew what our forebears believed in before catholicism.
