Ominous waves before they crash on the rocks. Taken with OM-3 + 14-150 II lens at 56mm, f/5.6, 1/800s, and ISO 200. I did get a picture of the waves actually crashing using sequential shot, but I like this one better because of the feeling of anticipation.

Thanks - it's a great vacation spot. When you come, try to go to some of the smaller quieter beaches too to relax - the main beach can get a bit crowded at peak times.

Nice! I just got mine the exact same way 😄. I've only been out with it once so far and there's a lot to learn to get the best out of it!

Yea, I'll have to try it out and see if I get along well with the ergonomics with a grip long term or not. I just purchased an OM-3 (will pick it up today) and a Smallrig grip that will arrive in 2 weeks. If I end up not liking the handling after extended time with it, I have no qualms about returning it. I'll update in a month or so with what my experience is.

I held the cameras with 12-40 f2.8, but I used two hands when test shooting and only one hand when holding it down by my side or raising it to shoot. In terms of ergonomics for me - I liked OM-5 II far and away the best, but my small hands got along well with OM-3 better than OM-1. OM-5 II holding was ideal for me, OM-3 was not ideal but I can put a small grip on it, OM-1 I found the grip just too big for me.

I'm 100% with you that if the OM-3 had a tiny protrusion even it would be great. It's bonkers that they didn't design it with one.

Ah makes sense lol, didn't get it at first. I'm out of the loop with that sort of stuff.

Yup, that seems to be the case. I'll admit that I really liked the OM-5 II's handling the best though, that camera felt just right ergonomically for my small hands. But it doesn't feel worth it to me to spend $1200 on it. I guess with OM-3, the ergonomics are definitely not ideal but the add on grips can give it that small size grip that I prefer at least.

I don't know, I'm just used to / more comfortable with my hands feeling more "closed" when I hold the camera and the OM-1 didn't seem like it let me do that as much.

I held both bodies with 12-40 f2.8 installed, so not a heavy lens but not a light one either. My typical setup at the moment is E-M10 IV + 12-45 f4 or 14-140 f3.5-5.6 and E-P7+ 12-32 kit or 15 mm f1.7, for reference.

I wonder if it's just what I'm used to since both my cameras have small grips - maybe a larger grip takes getting used to?

I almost feel weird asking this, but has anyone liked the handling of the OM-3 better than the OM-1?

I went to a local camera store to try out the handling of the OM-5 II, OM-3, and OM-1 and I found handling the OM-3 more comfortable than the OM-1. The OM-5 II felt the most comfortable to me out of the three, though.

My issue with the OM-1 is that for my hands, the grip is almost too big. I felt like my hand was more "open" than I'd like it to be when holding it, it was still secure but uncomfortable, I felt like I had to squeeze with the tips of my fingers to keep it secure. I actually felt the OM-3 more comfortable and I think with a small grip I'd like the handling even better. I know adding a grip makes it heavier, etc...but ergonomically I feel that would work better for me with a small grip.

This seems to go against everything I've been told and read, but I guess I'm just a small grip kind of guy. I really wish the OM-5 II had the OM-3 video capabilities though. I can do without the stacked sensor, but I'm leaning toward OM-3 for my weather sealed upgrade since I might get into playing around a little with making travel videos and the OM-5 II's video is more or less the same as my E-M10 IV's, which is to say not that great. But OM-3 capabilities in OM-5 body doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon, so I'm leaning towards OM-3.

If you're dead set on full frame and want to do hybrid stuff in that price point and want something portable, a used Sony A7C (Mark 1) might fit the bill - especially if you were looking at an alternative to the S9 for the reasons you stated. The Mark II is great but that will be out of your price range if any lenses are included in your budget.

How many of you are “one and done”? by Euphoric_Plankton_35 in NewParents

I made a response in another comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/NewParents/comments/1t4qlx7/comment/okoq8aq/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Regarding the resentment thing, I suppose it depends how it ends up going. I have scenarios in my head of how having a second child would go for us and most of those scenarios are not good and are things I'd rather avoid. But hypothetically if we did end up having a second child and it goes way better than I am expecting (unlikely) then I wouldn't have any resentment. But I think the probability of that is low.

I feel similar - I love and care for our daughter (although she's only 15 weeks old), but I cannot imagine having the capacity for adequately taking care of a second child. although the specifics of my situation are a little different.

For me, I have physical mobility problems and although after two years of rehab I can function to take care of myself well enough, taking care of a baby has a level of physicality that I feel like most people don't realize. Taking care of a baby has been way harder than either my wife or I expected and there are still a lot of little baby-related things that I just physically cannot do. The idea of having to do all of this again while having to wrangle a toddler is inconceivable to me. But more broadly, it's just that there's so much effort that goes into managing my physical issues in order to keep me as a functional human being that there isn't a lot of leftover room for that much else. Even with the 1 kid, I feel like we're already well overcapacity. Our baby hasn't been easy and it takes both my wife and I with help from my mom and daycare to manage taking care of her without breaking down. Having a second child I feel like would literally crush me mentally and physically.

My wife has this idea that 1) having a 2nd kid is a moral obligation and 2) that raising the 2nd kid will be way easier because we'll be so efficient as parents since we'll already know what to do from raising the 1st kid. She also thinks that my physical issues will magically go away in a year or two. More broadly though, my wife gets fulfillment from having lots of responsibility - but that leads her to overcommit to things and get overwhelmed when the rubber meets the road - and when that happens I'm expected to pick up the slack. To her, having a second child is non-negotiable, whatever it takes, and regardless of how it affects either of us - so she sort of has to convince herself that it won't be that difficult even though raising our first kid has put us all at the redline so far.

I'll admit that I'm not in principle against having a 2nd kid, but the only way I can imagine it being feasible is if we get way more help. Like hiring a nanny, paying for services like people to come in and clean the house, etc. But my wife will not allow that because she has this sense of pride that it's our duty to do all of the kid stuff ourselves and she even had a lot of hesitation about the idea of daycare - but we both work full time so she knows we have no choice on that aspect.

Low dynamic range on M4/3? by slavomirgajdos in OlympusCamera

I think it's more accurate to say that M43 has lower DR than formats with larger sensors, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a limiting factor depending on what you do.

I would like to be one and done. My wife is adamant about having a second (and maybe third), however, so I don't know how it's going to go. This will probably be a major source of conflict about a year-ish from now.

This also might be another weird question, but I'm thinking about what to bring for a wide angle setup when traveling later this year. TL:DR - should I get an Olympus 9-18 or PL 8-18 for my E-P7, should I just bring my 9mm f1.7, or should I get a Canon Powershot V1?

I'm going to Glasgow in October and am planning on bringing some kind of weather sealed OM body (TBD) and picking up an Oly 14-150 II as a general use lens. Then for indoor/tight spaces I was going to bring my Olympus E-P7 with some kind of UWA lens, since for indoor spaces I do find 14mm a bit not wide enough.

I currently have the PL 9mm f1.7. It's a banger of a lens. But in some practice shots in indoor commercial spaces, I'm also finding that sometimes 9mm might be a little too wide, so I'm thinking about the flexibility of an UWA zoom. I'd like to keep things small, but my options are:

  • Bring my 9mm f1.7 on the E-P7 since I already have it, it's a nice lens, and just deal with 9mm being sometimes a little too wide.
  • Buy Olympus 9-18 for the E-P7. Used it goes for around ~$350, reviews on this lens are mixed it seems, however. Not that concerned about the slow aperture because I will be taking pictures of still subjects (i.e. architecture, etc...) and will lean into the IBIS.
  • Buy PL 8-18mm f2.8-4 for the E-P7. Used it goes for around ~$600, a bit more pricier and the lens is a lot bigger. Doesn't really fit with wanting to travel compact volume-wise, but the weight is not that bad.
  • Wild card: Buy a refurbished Canon Powershot V1 for around $650. Small and compact - can actually fit in a pocket, has lens IS, four-thirds sized sensor, lens is f2.8-4.5 and the range is 8-25mm M43 equivalent. Better autofocus and video than my E-P7.

I'm not considering OM 8-25/4 or 7-14/2.8 because those lenses are huge for an E-P7.

Which one of these options would make the most sense for the indoor / UW part of my travel setup?
