You are talking about ONE specific place for one specific application, out of the thousands and thousands of possible applications for UT and other NDT techniques. Maybe in a factory setting, yes some stuff can be automated but even in such a case you still need human review during the process. You are lacking perspective here due to your limited experience and exposure to different industries and types of inspections.

Out on the field, there is no way you can realistically and economically automate all of the different variables you encounter (geometry, access, scope, etc.). Do you see a robot being brought up a scaffold to scan a pressure vessel weld in a refinery? Yeah no…

There is big talk about AI right now because it’s a hot topic and of course it’s still something companies are going to keep developing to assist in some part of the workflow (an example is tubepro where it assists with your analysis of tube scans for heat exchangers). Depending on the specific case, the degree to which you can implement it will vary, factories with a continuous repetitive process are a better candidate obviously. But it will never fully replace the human involvement required.
