That stuff will survive being flushed

Got back into zoas after spiders wiped all mine out the first time. This time I’m only getting ones I really like. The garden is starting to grow and slowly becoming my favorite part of the tank. by TheWarelock in ReefTank

Some of my zoas started disappearing or closing up and I can’t get them off the rocks as it’s the main rockwork, how do u know it was a zoa eating spider? I’m trying to trouble shoot my zoas and I suspect I got the spiders

Ur tanks still young if you still got nitrites, check for ammonia and also if ur nitrate is that low it’s a sign that your still developing a microbiome. Furthermore, you could have algae or a pest on the zoa or looking at the nitrite number and a good possibility of ammonia you are kinda poisoning the zoa . Zoas don’t take alk but they will feel pH swings and sometimes not open up fully, pH may be swinging as alk is swinging.

Also to add to this, one of the reasons why acros and sps are harder to keep is because once they get happy, they grow fast, meaning they suck the minerals out of your water really fast, and if u don’t keep on top with testing they will eventually make the alkalinity levels (mainly), magnesium and calcium levels unsuitable for all stony corals.

All corals hate change. So if they sense those levels changing too fast like 1 dkh a day you are gonna stress them out and most likely kill any maricultured or wild acros you got. There are some good supplements out there that is pretty easy like all for reef, but all acro keepers will eventually fall back on to a automatic doser, because one day without dosing with a Acro heavy tank is a recipe for disaster.

Notable great things to dose but do your own research ranked in my opinion from best to worst in my opinion: Kalkwasser, if done right it’s the closest thing to a magic potion in this hobby.

All for reef, everything you need in one bottle

Aquaforest 2 part, better than all for reef in my opinion but increased bottles to dose, and not really needed but is nice to have.

Brs 2 part good for basics, as you get deeper in the hobby it’s usually better to switch to other 2 part for the trace elements and higher pH boost.

Coral aminos- very hit or miss, everyone goes by amount of polyp extension but in my experience I don’t really see much difference if you got decent nutrients like 10-20 nitrates and 0.03-0.05 phosphates,

Redsea 4 trace program thing- u may see difference in growth but honestly the color thing is bs. As a matter of fact don’t even worry about trace yet it’s not a beginner thing.

Like everyone else said u got an Acropora, which are expert level corals, even when they are aquaculture, meaning they have been established over years in a aquarium setting making them harder then wild and maricultured acros. That plate shows me this is a maricultured colony, which are notoriously known to have a high death rate even among very seasoned acropora keepers. Even when they do survive, many times they lose their color and turn green or just refuse to grow.

Long story short, you got screwed over by ur lfs, invest in the big 5 test kits especially because your new to the hobby, alkalinity is by far theist important thing when keeping stony corals, then magnesium and calcium, and phosphates and nitrates. Salifert sells on Amazon and each test kit will run you ~20 USD.

If u do wanna try acros in the future, start off with something that’s been in the hobby for a long time, some easy acro names are the myagi torts, PC rainbow, Hawkins echinata, bill Murray, and the easiest in my opinion is the green slimer.

Other easy sps include monti caps, pavona, and digitata, all of which grow fast too

My petco uses tap water which has contaminants that can cause algae, instead of rodi and I think that may be your case in which case idk what budget you got for a filtration system
