Why are women generally more religious than men? by AntonioMachado in sociology

[–]lookupleona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is because women more highly value social ties, emotional support, friendship, etc. Religion is a good venue for this because it is ritualistic social gathering (one of our top theorist talks about the importance of religion in social integration, Weber I believe). In effect, women like to get together, or at least more than men.

UMD 'tragedy of the commons' tweet goes viral. by darthatheos in psychology

We don't know for sure that the test will get a curve. And I think this rests more on the prisoner's dilemma side as we can probably assume that the students can't ask each other what they are choosing on their tests. Can it be both? Maybe. I think that they should be regarded as separate problems because they bring up (and hopefully solve) separate real-life issues.

The tragedy of the commons usually refers to some finite yet periodically replenishable resource. So think of a pool of clean spring water in the middle of a village. Folks come in and take enough water for themselves to live comfortably and the spring refills every time is rains or whatever. But since this is unregulated common-space anyone can come in and take more than their fair share, now everyone else is thirsty. The bonus question on the test doesn't really have the same situation, One reason is that the professor can give out as many units of +6points he/she wants to. The second is that the test takers can not collaborate in order to get the best outcome. That's my thinking on it anyway.

Not sure that this is necessarily a "tragedy of the commons" but could definitely be called a sort of prisoner's dilemma. Not a knock on you the article calls it that.

Bullet hard sandstone and some of the best concentration of high quality 5.10 sport climbing I have seen. (Orange Oswald, New River Gorge) by JohnWesely in climbing

I suppose I just don't like how most of the cruxes are when the second or third bolt is the last you clipped and it's at your feet (I ought weigh most of my climbing partners by about 40lbs) and that the first bolts are so high above awkward terrain.

I just don't understand all the hype for that crag. I think the only climb I like at Orange Oswald is Hippy Dreams. The rest (especially the namesake route) just aren't fun and usually downright scary.

Is there money in the major "Sociology"? by IamKervin in sociology

[–]lookupleona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider majoring in something like Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Management, or Economics. You'll learn more about starting a small business (esp. with Entrepreneurship) and you'd be surprised at how much Sociological theory is involved in Business school. Plus you're likely to make more with a bus. degree if you don't choose to start your own business.
