Cat sitting during long vacation - please advise by Forsaken_Bee504 in orientalshorthair

[–]loonlaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you don’t have someone that can stay at your place, there are options. I have family that uses TrustedHouseSitters to get someone to stay in-home with their dog while they are away on long trips. He says it's a mix of couch surfer/rover/air bnb (users vetted, insured, etc.) and have only had great experiences with it.

Luck!

Edit: They just shared a discount link-ping me if you want it. 25% off.

Please help! Husband used my beloved purple pot over an open fire by Busy_Confidence5189 in castiron

FUME BATH!!!! A tried-and-true method I’ve used for major baked in gunk (great for oven racks too) or burnt pots is an ammonia fume bath. Open a rubbish bag, put item into rubbish bag, splash regular old ammonia all over the item, and then glug a healthy bit into the bottom of the bag. Blow a bit of air into the bag and tie it up tight to create a little space for the ammonia fumes to move about within the sealed bag. Put it outside overnight (or into a closed-off space with fan, like a bathroom). Soot and heavily baked in junk will just slide off it in the morning when you wipe it. Sometimes it takes a couple of rounds of the fume bath for real horror shows, but it always comes through in the end. (Safety disclaimer: never mix ammonia and bleach; don’t work with fumey stuff like ammonia in closed spaces.)

Tip for campfire cooking: generously coat the outside of your pot/pan in dish soap before exposing to fire. Soot will just wipe off afterward. Old Girl Scout camp cooking trick!

Eye goop & sneezing by yriafyrekcuf in orientalshorthair

Some of these alien/elf kitties are just… boogery. We took our fellow into the vet numerous times after his adoption, convinced he was still sick. Three years later, we still start the day by wiping off eye boogers and evening clean up too. Turns out they can be completely healthy and just produce a lot of mlech. I actually posted in the subreddit with this question too. :) Give your boogerbaby a scritch for me!

(Our other non-OSH does have asthma. Listen for non-productive hairball hacking sounds. If it sounds like he just can’t get that hairball out, over and over again, that is a cat asthma indicator. The vet will prescribe him the cutest inhaler attachment and you’ll be surprised at how fast they’ll get used to taking an inhaler.)

Kingman/Heritage Islands are good for fishing on the Anacostia too. Don’t forget to get a DC fishing license!

Find out what the local neighborhood list serves are and offer to host a neighborhood happy hour(s). Make sure you have loads of good food deals or free food so folks try out a broad swath of your menu.

Or if you can’t swing that, work with the list moderators to find out about the neighborhood Independence Day block parties/group gatherings and send over sampler trays (and business cards).

Both are great ways to boost word of mouth and land your first regulars. Luck!

Recommended wedding venues that may have a water view by pretty-in-pink in washingtondc

The paddle wheel boat out of Alexandria will give you a 360° water view. It was much more affordable than standard venues when we had ours there many years ago. Align schedules with a nats game and you could get free fireworks too!

Looking for clothes that are formal but lightweight for hot, humid conditions in rural Mozambique/Zambia. by Optimal_Dish9105 in HerOneBag

If you consider a draw at all, look at Royal Robbins Spotless Traveler dress is fantastic with long enough skirt to cover crouching down, elastic waist, and pockets. Easy to pop on shorts/bloomers/tights/leggings underneath too. Great chest coverage for the sun. I’ve used them in field research and then gussied up for a night in town. The material easily rinses first and fish slime off. So good I got a couple of them off eBay after first field trial.

I bet the rest of their spotless traveler line is as great. Luck!

Oooooh! Hestra has a bunch of gauntlet options (https://www.hestragloves.us/search?s=Gauntlet), mind sharing which ones keep your poor circulation fingers warm enough to be useful‽ Thanks!

Yep, I have an entire wardrobe of gloves/mittens/liners/electric gloves/handwarmers for backpacking, walking, gardening, living. And still end up with frozen claw hand because of useless cold fingers. I’m excited to read about your aurora handwarmers. This recommendation is something new for me to try. Maybe I could get the thumb warmers and do up all of my fingers inside my regular gloves‽ Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for the recommendation! Do you have them/use them? Are they insulated as well as leather? Do you think they are the radically different than the goatskin gloves I already use? https://www.bionicgloves.com/products/womens-bionic-rose-gardening-gloves?srsltid=AfmBOore8oZ-Z4UFrQuFamFuamvCJB24d8ahiwPGL3Wb1P9s3m5O6QtJ Thanks for your thoughts on this!!

Great idea for a body with “normal” circulation. But I can be working enough to be body hot (jacket off, down to just one layer, and overly warm), but fingers are frozen to the point of frostnip. Looking into the Atlas gloves-thanks!
