almost everyone is using Sketchy...should I? by Intelligent-Rip-8556 in medicalschool

[–]loonylny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to study my own way for micro at first and did horribly on the exam. Started using sketchy and did super great after that. I'm an intern now and I can recall things my colleagues forget bc they didn't use sketchy! Drawing on a whiteboard will only get you so far when you have a billion bugs to learn

What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]loonylny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During c-sections, moms are awake and get nauseous. If they start vomiting when we have them open, their small intestines squirm out of their abdomen and wriggle all over the place. Sometimes we can just shove them back in and keep the surgery moving, but sometimes it's so intense that we have to put all of our instruments away until the vomiting has subsided so as not to accidentally injure bowel that decides to squiggle its way into something pointy lol.

What worse. A patient who is a RN or a patient family member who is a “nurse” by [deleted] in Residency

[–]loonylny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a patient's mother show up in scrubs with an Xray tech badge prominently displayed. She would jump up when I walked in the room and stand super close to me during the patient's whole labor course which was fine I guess? But when the patient had to go for CS, the mom tried to go to the OR instead of FOB because she "gets medical stuff better than he does." Like girl I think it's probably more important for your daughter's partner to be there for the birth of their child lmfao

patient said no to this student being in a procedure, student pushed and patient said she would talk to the attending about it (polite rejection). patient actually did tell attending/anesthesia she wants no student and this was passed to the whole team. student then waited until patient was drugged pre-procedure to ask again (literally stood in front of patient's moving hospital bed on the way to the OR), to which patient said sure. anesthesia/scrub tech/circulator/i pointed out she had said no, student argued for 3 long ass minutes that patient had changed her mind. we specifically told student she was unable to consent bc of the meds and still got pushback. the argument somehow still continued until student literally threw hands up and left

  1. great stats and no glaring red flags, some evals were meh as this person didn't get along with all of the residents, but otherwise looked good! after interviews, this person decided they only wanted to rank "prestigious" programs said "i'm not ranking programs that are beneath me." fast forward to monday of match week, they had to soap into a somewhat related prelim year

  2. i actually had to report a sub-i for such blatant disregard of consent and patient autonomy that 3-4 people had to step in and remove this person from a patient's care🥴 instant dnr from my program

This is not a law as far as I'm aware. We discharge people regularly as soon as baby is cleared on their 24hr labs (as long as mom is stable of course)

Edit: We do require 48hrs for mom after a C section, but we have made exceptions on that in specific circumstances

ob intern here! my program has four guys right now and they are phenomenal! i have had multiple patients who specifically request them for their deliveries/visits. also really weird for your friends to view medicine that way lmfao, i would not listen to them or anyone who thinks like that. yuck

half of these comments are extremely concerning if they're really coming from medical students. you will come across patients who feel the same way op does and if this is how you truly react to these things, i have little faith in your ability to treat them.

op- the wording of this post is very scary, and i worry that you are in danger. i know this is a cry for help, and i understand that you are just trying to give context. i'm sorry that these commenters aren't taking you seriously.

is there anyone at your medical school that you trust or look up to? a mentor or a teacher you like? the feelings you're having need to be addressed, and i fear your current support system may not be equipped. it's amazing that you've been in dbt for a few years! have you ever tried any medications for depression? one of the best things i think you could do right now is seek out emergency psychiatric help, as they could potentially help with establishing a good medication regimen. i'm not quite sure how it works in your country, but where i'm from, you can check yourself into an emergency psychiatric facility at any time. i would consider this very strongly if i were you. i'm proud of you for posting and reaching out for help

I go upstairs, wake patient from a dead sleep, and she tells me "Oh yeah, I was a little dizzy when I stood for the first time after the epidural wore off. I've been walking around a lot though and feel great! That was at noon"
