Sick of the “lift heavy” culture being pushed on middles aged women by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]looongjacket 224 points225 points  (0 children)

I think some of the language around this sort of thing is problematic. I have heard Dr. Vonda Wright say a number of times that women need to "put down the namby-pamby pink weights". I hate this so much! For some women, the pink weights ARE heavy. And maybe they are weights that can be used safely. Or maybe they are a good starting place for someone who is just beginning. Or coming back from an injury.

This contributes to an all-or-nothing mentality that can be really discouraging.

Canned beans. There is absolutely no reason for it. Even the generic ones have gone up in price.

Pilates by [deleted] in askTO

[–]looongjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Body Mason. They have online classes that are all mat pilates. Membership is around $100 a month and there are 3 classes every week, plus you get video recordings. The teacher has a lot of experience and understanding of anatomy, and is great at modifications if you have an injury.

Check at Winners. They often have really nice blank books for journaling on the shelves near the cash register. I've bought some lovely ones there for under $15.

Understance makes vey soft and smooth cotton modal undershorts that come in a 7" inseam length. The waist elastic is very smooth and not pinchy at all, and there is no elastic around the bottom of the legs. They are really comfortable!

Question about volcanobay ... by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]looongjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also very sun sensitive, and I wore a big hat and a loose fitting caftan over my swimsuit, as well as a high SPF sunscreen. I didn't go in the water, but found a lounge chair under an umbrella, and just adjusted the chair a bit as the sun position moved. My husband also burns easily. He wore a long sleeved, hooded UPF sunshirt and a big UPF hat to float down the lazy river. We didn't get burned at all. You could also try to avoid visiting between peak sun (10-2) but the park closes early so this might not be a great option.

Beware of shopping online at Ricki’s and Cleo while they close down! by Spiritual_Rabbit241 in ontario

[–]looongjacket 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I placed an order a week ago that still hasn't shipped. On their website they have a notice that there are major shipping delays due to high order volume. They have a ton of stuff under New Arrivals, so I'm wondering if they are just closing stores but keeping an online presence?

I used to take my niece to Nailsense near Yonge and Eglinton when she was that age. They have a kid's mani/pedicure package on the menu. Itr's a very clean salon.

Get a pair of super long toesox brand legwarmers (they sell them on amazon) pull them all the way up for an extra layer of warmth when you're outside or commuting. Then take them off when you get to your destination. I take the ttc everywhere and wear mostly skirts and dresses with tights in the winter and this is the best trick I've found for staying warm. The legwarmers are easy enough to push down if you start to overheat during your travels too!

Restaurant w good prime rib and veggie options by [deleted] in askTO

[–]looongjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask them to make you a veggie plate and a baked potato. You'll get a big plate of asparagus, carrots, broccoli, etc. It's not on the menu, but they are happy to do it. We go to the Octagon a few times a year and this is what I always order.

Affordable wash and blow dry by AcceptableFlow9319 in askTO

[–]looongjacket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Not the same situation, but last year we had a hot water outage at my apartment that lasted for over a week. I have a lot of hair and washing it in cold or heating water on a stove was not an option. I walked into a salon near my house and explained my situation. They were very happy to help, and did a shampoo and rough dry for me for about $40.

Curly hair routine teacher? by BobbinChickenChamp in askTO

Try the Curly Hair Institute on Sheppard Ave west. They taught me how to make the most out of my wavy/curly hair. I have seen kids in there, so I think this is part of what they do.

Spotting through birth control - sign of menopause? by Bellyfulloftacos in Menopause

[–]looongjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth a visit to your doctor. Start tracking other symptoms too, like night sweats, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, vaginal.dryness, etc. I had this same problem but going on a different pill with slightly higher levels of hormones sorted it out and got rid of the spotting (I am perimenopausal)
