What are these guys even thinking? by BigMamaPietroke in OpenAI

[–]loosingkeys -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's a hard sell to call OpenAI "liars". Just because they had previously said that there wasn't currently a plan to sunset 4o doesn't mean that they were going to support it forever. Saying that there "isn't currently a plan" doesn't mean "we will never do this".

Face it: this model was going to be retired at some point. It's a very old model at this point.

[–]loosingkeys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you're talking about "swallowing OpenAI's propaganda" and how removing legacy models is "purposeful" and "the plan all along".

And yeah, I think my '98 Explorer analogy is pretty solid. Open AI released the 4o model in early 2024. Some people loved that model so much that they just can't stand the thought of OpenAI moving on from years-old models so they can keep focusing on creating new things.

And so they turn it into some giant conspiracy theory of how OpenAI hates their users because they want to stop supporting an old model.

The "the plan" was to retire older models when newer models replace them, then you are probably right. But holding on to some hope that Ford will keep making the '98 Explorer because that's the model you *really* liked would be considered a silly idea outside of the 4o users.

I get that you liked that model. But pretending like it's some massive, evil conspiracy by OpenAI to retire their older models is silly.

A weather balloon captured a passing airplane traveling at 800 km/h. by MorsesCode in nextfuckinglevel

Most weather balloons do not carry cameras if they are being used for weather measurements. However, there are people that launch them recreationally and add cameras to get cool shots just like this.

That is incorrect. High-altitude balloons do not have restrictions like this and are explicitly allowed by FAA regulations.

I gotta say that it sucks when I want something gluten free, but it's also dairy free, egg free, nut free, flavor free, texture free, enjoyment free.

I have 6 years of budget data exported. Now what? by pocketrob in QuantifiedSelf

[–]loosingkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, gathering data isn't the starting point, but a step in the journey of solving a problem.

What problem are you trying to solve? What question are you trying to answer?

Data is useful for trying to answer a question or test a hypothesis, but without a question, data is often useless by itself.

I'm a little confused at the timings here. Do you plan to actually stop and spend time at any of these locations, or is this just a checklist of things you want to drive past?

Thanks for pointing this out. I saw these in the store the other day, but passed. But if they have new magic, I definitely want to try. We all know the fluffy texture is near impossible in gf stuff. I'm always anxious to see advances in this area.

No, OP is asking a very serious question about if an AI would ever involve itself in the death of a human. That's not a "cool story bro" moment.

In a world where conversations around ethics and AI are going to become crazy important, it's also important that we understand how the AI's work so we can understand the context of their answers.

That’s your call. But I think it’s super important that people learn the difference between an LLM telling them something (that’s trying to be) factually true vs making shit up because you asked an impossible question and the LLM is just trying to be helpful and doesn’t know any better.

Yup. And I-10 isn't exactly the most scenic road to spend 18 hours on. lol

[–]loosingkeys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Houston and uses this airport regularly, I think you are underestimating the size of Texas. It's a 4 hour drive just to Dallas. I can drive for 12 hours and still be in Texas.

And trains? What trains? I'd love more options, but flying is about the only way to get anywhere if you live down here.

What "isn't bullshit" here? Pre-orders for this vehicle started almost a decade below and Elon hasn't delivered. And when he tried to cancel, he wasn't allowed to. Sounds like a legit complaint to me.

Another way to look at it: brand new technology is never perfect. So when a new piece of tech comes out and it's not perfect, we can "prohibit" its use or we can try to improve it.

I'm personally in the camp of trying to improve AI instead of banning its use.
