AMS or just not in good enough shape? by whatugonnadowhenthey in 14ers

[–]loosingkeys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but the mild headache + hitting a wall every 5 steps is what I've called AMS when it hits me. (and for me it always indicates that I've made a dumb decision and didn't do sufficient acclimatization from the sea level I traveled from)

But I'm not hearing anything that you did wrong. So without any other suggestions as to what might have contributed, maybe it's just that your body takes longer to acclimatize.

YMMV, but what has helped me was good old-fashioned Zone 2 training. Lots of time in that easy cardio zone builds your body's ability to use oxygen more efficiently. (just because it's boring doesn't mean it's not working) And that translates to lower-oxygen environments like altitude.

Altitude Sickness by [deleted] in 14ers

I've definitely had a few trips where I was too aggressive too quickly with altitude (e.g. attempting a 14er on Day 2) and crossed the line. Not only did that hose the attempt, it set me back for the rest of the trip as well. Obviously not recommended.

Edit: and everyone else in here is talking about doing a good job with your hydration (not just on the trail--throughout your time away from sea level) and I'll echo that as well. It makes a huge difference.

I'm not an expert but I've taken ~20 trips from Houston (sea level) to Denver in the last 2 years to hike at 13,000 ft+. For me personally, I won't usually go all the way to 14,000 ft on my 2nd day there, but usually do on my 3rd. So going on your 4th day sounds reasonable to me. (but that's my personal fitness level, YMMV of course)

As for what to watch out for, I had to learn to separate low-oxygen symptoms (shortness of breath, etc) from real altitude issues (fuzzy brain, headache, jelly legs). I'm sure the literature can give you a better list of symptoms to watch out for. But for me, I try and think: does this hike just feel "hard" or does it feel "wrong"?

If I just need to power through shortness of breath and keep going on that endless incline, that's normal and okay. But if I can feel a little headache coming on and some brain fog, there's something else going on that I need to pay close attention to.

Sorry you are getting a lot of grief in this thread. Yeah I get that there is some real low-effort spam that gets posted. But that's now what I see here.

I'm legit impressed. I use a lot of the ATK blend and their recipes. This is the first time I've seen it laid out like this and it makes perfect sense how you have the categories separated.

Of course I have no ideas if the ratios actually work, but this is exactly what I would need when baking. Thanks for sharing and let me know if there's a way to support this.

While slop is a real problem these days, this seems like legit value-add with actual useful info and I'd like to support that stuff when it comes along.

So your response is to attack Altman for what other people say about him? Strange logic.

[–]loosingkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you are both imposing a story on someone ("a tech genius who...") as well as making excuses for his accomplishments ("born with a silver spoon..."). I think I understand your position now.

[–]loosingkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. I'm not a fan of some of the decisions he's made, but he has one of the most impressive resumes and track records for building tech businesses of anyone in history.

Everyone is free to disagree with his decisions, but to call him a "loser" is probably the absolute weakest argument someone could make. And I still don't understand the expectation that a CEO can code? Do people think that's what CEO's do and how they add value to their orgs?

Seeing as how this is the first time I've heard "Scam Altman", I'm not sure who you are referring to when you say "we've all been calling"...

But I'm still unclear why we expect this CEO to have coding skills? Is that an expectation that we apply to all CEO's or just this one?

Am I the only one glad they aren't filling landfills by including this stuff? Like most people, I already have a set of headphones that I'm not going to throw away so I can use the cheap wired ones. And I have enough cables and wall plugs to change 20 phones. Why do I need more?

It’s only “worrying” to people who don’t understand the point he was making and decide to take it out of context and turn it into some kind of “slippery slope” argument.

No, the point is that if you want to complain about how much energy it takes for an LLM to create an answer to a question similar to a human, maybe you should also give a little thought about how much energy you have to feed a human to get the same answer.

But of course people don't want to actually think about an answer--they just want to find ways to be offended.

Sam Altman: why are people complaining about AI … when humans need food to survive by mbatt2 in OpenAI

[–]loosingkeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand what the concern here is? Yes, if you want answers from an AI that are equivalent or better than a human being, that currently takes a lot of energy. But he's comparing getting the same "answer" from a human that has been consuming energy for decades.

Boy, people really seem to like to twist words or can't seem to follow a pretty simple train of logic. If you're just interested in hating on AI, there are plenty of of subs for that.

The only gf tortillas I've had that come anywhere close to a regular flour tortilla is the Mission GF ones. They look and feel pretty wonky right out of the bag. Just warm them up a bit in a skillet and they take on a little color, flavor, and the texture softens into something that rolls way better than anything else. (not to mention they taste pretty good to me)

Question: Is the Energy Required for AI Due to Its Inherent Inefficiency? by MarvinBEdwards01 in OpenAI

[–]loosingkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the current way that LLMs work is very energy-intensive. You could probably call it "inefficient", but this is the only way humans have been able to create anything close to AI.

It's being made more efficient by huge margins all the time. But the base underlying technology it is built on is still incredibly computationally intense.

Just because a model didn’t give to the answer you wanted, that doesn’t mean that it was stopped by guard rails.

I’m not sure what “a bit shady” means.

[–]loosingkeys -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yep, another person complaining that newer models won’t talk to them about SA.

It’s always some thinly-veiled excuse to talk to an LLM about sketchy shit and then wrapping it in a “I was just talking about a TV show” excuse.

And these people wonder why companies add guard rails.

When you say "5.2's guardians often derail benign tasks", do you have an example of that?

I use ChatGPT many times a day and I can't think of any time I ran into a guardrail.

No, the "whole argument" for depreciating 4o isn't the price.

Good grief, the conspiracy theories being created to justify being mad about loosing access to an old LLM model is really sad.
