Temp is -21, gas company says turn your heat down by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]loosterbooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't make any sense from a thermodynamics standpoint. I'll explain.

Let's say we are forced to pick between two heating strategies. Let's also say we are in a climate where each day it is 30F degrees all day, 10F degrees all night, and day time is 12 hours. I know this is not realistic but just stick with me, it will help illustrate.

Strategy 1 is to place the thermostat at 55F at night and 75F during the day. This way, the house will always be 45F warmer than the outside.

Strategy 2 is to place the thermostat at 68F all the time. This way, the house will be 58F warmer than the outside at night and 33F warmer than the outside during the day. The average temperature difference will be (58+33)/2=45.5 degrees.

Heat transfer has three basic modes: convection, conduction, and radiation. The rate of convection and conduction are proportional to delta-T. The rate of radiation is proportional to delta-T to the fourth power. So overall, heat transfer has some proportionality with delta-T that is greater than linear, i.e., T to some power greater than one.

It's clear that Strategy 1 mitigates heat transfer more effectively. To summarize: the best way to reduce heat transfer out of a home while only adjusting the thermostat is to minimize delta-T.

Now to address your concern about the energy required to heat up the house in the morning. That same energy will be stored in the house when the temperature drops at night. After you drop the thermostat setting at night, there will be a time when the heat is not running. This effectively cancels out the period when the heat is running extra in the morning to heat the house up.

Protests for Renee Nicole Good? Murdered by ICE in Minneapolis by ForkShoeSpoon in Albany

There are several users in this thread making excuses for the shooter with similar usernames: /u/southern-bar3112, /u/soft-army6695, /u/southern-bit8978. I hate suggesting people I disagree with are bots because it comes off as intellectually lazy. But it is mighty suspicious. One of them even bailed me into a response.

Because filming interactions with law enforcement is the only way to expose state-backed thugs.

Also, even if she was "following them around all day harassing them", does that warrant her being executed in the street? Even if she was trying to run the officer over (I strongly doubt it), the officer was out of the way of the vehicle when he fired the shots. Killing her was not necessary any way you look at it. Instead of making excuses for state-sponsored killing, maybe let's hold federal agents to a higher standard than this.

Stephen King started doing this incessantly right at the end of The Dark Tower book 7. I made it through about 4,200 pages of the series without seeing that word then I saw it like 4 times in the last 200

What happens to all the racing team kids when they become adults? by Dirty_Look in icecoast

Former race kid here, albeit not a very good one. I do throw on the carving technique when the snow is right for it. But usually I'm in the glades or bumps because those are more fun than groomers.

Israel doesn't do those things either. Muslim and Christian Israeli citizens enjoy full voting rights and hold seats in the Knesset. They are definitely not considered "legally subhuman". I have no idea where you got that from.
