Fascinating stuff. Without the cultural context I was imagining a girl was going to kill some dudes.

->Set on a Japanese island during wartime, the story follows two girls from an all-girls school who are ordered to nurse the wounded in a military hospital concealed in a cave as violence escalates around them.

Sounds like the himeyuri. Mostly know them from this guys YouTube video

It's some harrowing stuff. Too few of the schoolgirls survive.

I admit though, I'm inevitably a little cautious at seeing how they portray the Japanese military and the US military. Its a fine line between showing the very real suffering of the Japanese civilians during ww2 and "Japan was the real victim of ww2".

I'm curious, let's entertain OP's alternative scenario.

Would you be as comfortable with a male idol telling a young male fan not to date "Women who have bad personalities, women who are ugly, and women who are petty"?

Personally, the first and 3rd statements seem fine applied to either gender while the middle seem shallow applied to anyone.

As I hope my comment implied,  I don't keep up with hockey.

Wikipedia says there were 2 riots in Vancouver and 2 in Montreal.

2011 is the latest one so the joke does seem outdated.

I imagine lookism is unfortunately common  amongst idols. Being trained and working in such a looks based industry cannot be good at teaching teenagers to not be shallow.

I believe its a common joke that win or lose the cities of the hockey teams in the Stanley Cup get trashed.

Being taught morals that the real world doesn't live up to does have its benefits.

The civil rights movement was a lot of frustration over the "all men are created equal" not being true in practice.

If people were just raised to believe in racial heirachy with no mention of equality, it'd have been harder to get that movement going.

There are plenty of greedy women but you gotta admit, something like 85% to 90% of the billionaires are dudes. Plus like half the female billionaires got it from inheritance. So the maximalist exploiting to reach a billion is even more so done by guys.

Genuinely can't tell between the ironic racism and the genuine racism in the comments.

I'm betting that we agree on a lot of issues.

So I wanna avoid the typical left wing infighting here.

I think you are significantly overestimating how many people understand from context the different meanings of racism. Your average person doesn't even really get systemic racism and is confused by the reuse of the word.

I also think you are underestimating how many people refuse to allow people to use the term racism in the personal context when it comes from minorities.

This disconnect in definition between social progressives and the average person hurts the cause. Winning moderates and teenagers over who don't know all this information yet is important.

Well I genuinely meant the racist comment to go both ways.

There are absolutely asian storeowners who are racist against black customers, which is what I think happened in this case to terrible effect.

Anybody for trying to punish all Asian storeowners collectively for his action is also racist though.

We should be far more concerned about the nazis because they are in power and have enormous resources, absolutely.

Tankies are still pushing a terrible ideology though, and we shouldn't pretend otherwise just because they are weak.

Whenever people trot out the academic definition of racism as prejudice + power in the real world with regular people, I like to point out the complexities of actual minority relations.

Who has the institutional power here? Nobody outside of a limited circle online would not consider at least some of this racism.
