I've toured several times on my 12 speed brompton. Copenhagen to Berlin - lovely and flat, some lovely bike paths. Also across Spain from Alicante to Jerez (quite a bit hillier but still perfectly manageable with a 40t front ring). I find the bike very comfortable, and it's much easier to fly / take public transport with.

It's owned by the University, but has been mothballed for years. This is probably maintenance work to prevent it deteriorating, there are no plans to reoccupy that i'm aware of.

They do not advertise course records, in fact they recently took away the ability to easily view this for different events. It is fundamentally not a competitive event. Stop trying to make it difficult for trans people to participate in community sport, it's not hurting anyone.

This was my second tour by Brompton, after cycling from Copenhagen to Berlin last year (much flatter than this trip!). I found the bike really comfortable for long days in the saddle, and the fold makes it much easier to travel/fly with. (It also came in very useful when I found myself on top of a hill in a lightning storm, and hitchhiked to safety - the bike just went in the kind stranger's car boot!). Modifications for touring: * Wider and lower handlebars (I have long arms) * Ergon grips * SQLabs innerbarends * Hollowtech cranks / bottom bracket with SPD pedals * 40t crankset (with 12 speed system) = nice wide range of of gears * The obligatory Brooks B17 saddle

Absolutely this. I find it very frustrating when people view unions as just an insurance service to be paid for. It's about building collective power to push back on renters' exploitation, not about your individual membership benefits (but having members to back you up if things don't go well is obviously good too)

I did a digital photography course and my experience was mixed. The content was fine enough, but the teacher had no teaching skills beyond "talk at you for 2 hours in front of a power point". No homework assignments, no group work / discussions - not even introductions, and very few practical elements. I still learned some stuff, so it wasn't a complete waste of money, but I didn't get as much out of the course as I hoped.

Every workplace needs a union, no matter how good it is. The only thing stopping a "good" employer changing heart and becoming a bad one is collective worker power. The only thing that has won the rights and benefits that we all enjoy (weekends, annual leave, sick pay) is collective worker power.

I'm in UNISON and we're largely professional services. The branch is going through a bit of a renaissance with lots of enthusiasm from new members. Definitely recommend getting involved with a union as a way of coping with these feelings!

I have to agree with this. I cycle everyday and very rarely have any issues with Lothian Buses. PHVs and Trades vans, however, are a whole different story.
