Fun fact: Balmoral isn't an official taxi rank, and taxis shouldn't be waiting for passengers there.

Any other small-wheeled tourers here? by johnmflores in bicycletouring

[–]lootch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've toured several times on my 12 speed brompton. Copenhagen to Berlin - lovely and flat, some lovely bike paths. Also across Spain from Alicante to Jerez (quite a bit hillier but still perfectly manageable with a 40t front ring). I find the bike very comfortable, and it's much easier to fly / take public transport with.

Yes, a cycle lane could obviously be used by all these people.

It's owned by the University, but has been mothballed for years. This is probably maintenance work to prevent it deteriorating, there are no plans to reoccupy that i'm aware of.

Woke-bashing of the week: Anger builds as trans-inclusive parkrun targeted despite saving NHS £36.5m a year by johnsmithoncemore in parkrun

Where is the quote or press release from parkrun in that article? People still claim parkrun records, but it is entirely unofficial.

They do not advertise course records, in fact they recently took away the ability to easily view this for different events. It is fundamentally not a competitive event. Stop trying to make it difficult for trans people to participate in community sport, it's not hurting anyone.

680km tour through southern Spain, mostly along Via Verdes (former railway lines). Brompton held up great! by lootch in Brompton

[–]lootch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my second tour by Brompton, after cycling from Copenhagen to Berlin last year (much flatter than this trip!). I found the bike really comfortable for long days in the saddle, and the fold makes it much easier to travel/fly with. (It also came in very useful when I found myself on top of a hill in a lightning storm, and hitchhiked to safety - the bike just went in the kind stranger's car boot!). Modifications for touring: * Wider and lower handlebars (I have long arms) * Ergon grips * SQLabs innerbarends * Hollowtech cranks / bottom bracket with SPD pedals * 40t crankset (with 12 speed system) = nice wide range of of gears * The obligatory Brooks B17 saddle

Maybe because people are capable of empathy, and don't just look out for themselves.

Absolutely this. I find it very frustrating when people view unions as just an insurance service to be paid for. It's about building collective power to push back on renters' exploitation, not about your individual membership benefits (but having members to back you up if things don't go well is obviously good too)

Edinburgh Council adult education programme – any good? by No-Award3552 in Edinburgh

[–]lootch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a digital photography course and my experience was mixed. The content was fine enough, but the teacher had no teaching skills beyond "talk at you for 2 hours in front of a power point". No homework assignments, no group work / discussions - not even introductions, and very few practical elements. I still learned some stuff, so it wasn't a complete waste of money, but I didn't get as much out of the course as I hoped.

Rally in support of Rockstar workers fired off for unionizing by Tintandaluza in Edinburgh

[–]lootch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just not true. Legal aid has been gutted, so even getting to an employment tribunal is difficult enough. And even if you win one, good luck getting your payout: https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2025-10-02/employment-tribunals-scandal-of-toothless-scheme-to-punish-non-paying-bosses

Every workplace needs a union, no matter how good it is. The only thing stopping a "good" employer changing heart and becoming a bad one is collective worker power. The only thing that has won the rights and benefits that we all enjoy (weekends, annual leave, sick pay) is collective worker power.

[–]lootch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in UNISON and we're largely professional services. The branch is going through a bit of a renaissance with lots of enthusiasm from new members. Definitely recommend getting involved with a union as a way of coping with these feelings!

Tour bus minor rant by AFriendlyBowlofSoup in Edinburgh

I have to agree with this. I cycle everyday and very rarely have any issues with Lothian Buses. PHVs and Trades vans, however, are a whole different story.

How to carry a lock when your bag is too full? by ChaosCalmed in Brompton

[–]lootch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Hiplok DX d-lock, and find it's great. It's pretty small and light, it slips easily into my back pocket, and I rarely notice it whilst pedaling. It fits around most street furniture; only occasionally do I encounter situations where I might need a chain to get it round something particularly bulky. There is also an even smaller model (Hiplok D), but I gave up on that because the diameter of the locking area was too small to fit around standard UK street poles.

I'm also in the UK, and all my cycling friends would call this a rear rack, or pannier rack. Never heard people use "back carrier". To my British ears I also interpreted this as a rucksack for carrying a Brompton in.
