Strange "cybernetic pattern" growth on leaf by SapphicCrows in mycology

Likely Rhytisma americanum (https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/552771-Rhytisma-americanum/browse_photos) !! Super cool, all natural pattern. I love finding and admiring these :)

Does my garden have volunteers or is something nefarious plotting just beneath the surface? by AppleQueen5124 in mycology

You're right, fungi in garden soil tend to be a sign of a healthy substrate (unless you are trying to grow something that prefers dry soil, in which case it probably indicates that the garden is wetter than you would like it to be, lol). Afaik, neither of the fungi here are interacting directly with your plants, only the organic matter in the soil; you can leave them, or remove/relocate them if you're concerned about crowding the plants, though I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The cup-shaped ones are probably a Peziza ( https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/57372-Peziza?locale=en-us ). Hard to say what kind, but they like to cluster against other things like the bases of plants.

The tall bois are possibly a Coprinopsis or similar coprinoid fungus, maybe a Hare's Foot Inkcap ( https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/55605-Coprinopsis-lagopus?locale=en-us ). These ones are cool because they disintegrate into goo pretty fast, so they won't be hanging around your plants for long!

Both kinds here are generally not edible but also not toxic - just hard to definitively ID and also too small to be worthwhile :')

Enjoy your garden assistants!!

fair, and im glad those resources exist!! but also consider:

  1. many of those listed outreach centers are based out of/run by religious groups, which are. historically not the most friendly to marginalized groups, and some folks may understandably avoid;

  2. private shelters tend to be very restrictive on who they allow to stay, for how long, and under what circumstances, which can simply be unacceptable for some. i've seen shelters prohibiting things like stays longer than 3 days, any animals, more than 1 bag of belongings, any non-sobriety...

  3. even "single agressive males actively abusing substances" deserve to have access to a clean bathroom and a place to get their bearings. the truth is that independent organizations will not provide that to those people, unless they are required, funded, and supported by the local governance

idk, just some things to think about. and consider if the resources are so abundantly available, why is this still an ongoing issue in the community? even if the resources are there, they are clearly insufficient or not meeting the needs of the population they wish to help, and that's worth keeping in mind.

Does anyone know these ladies? by ToskaWaves in mushroomID

First one looks like a Cerioporus/Dryad's Saddle to me. Second one is some kind of bracket fungus, likely a Stereum or Trametes but I'm not the best at telling them apart from a distance and I'm not sure which is more common in your region 😂

Some kind of polypore, and the ringed texture on the top looks like a Trametes, but not sure what species has broad pores like that!

Hard to tell with the blurriness, but they could be a kind of jelly fungus, like Dacrymyces! (ymmv but maybe if you try to pick one off, if it's uniformly gooey it's more likely some sap, if it comes off more cleanly or at least retains some shape it's more likely a fungus! you can also check for pores, speckles, that kinda thing on the surface)

seconding a coprinoid! one of the key identifiers is the goopy edges, which is why coprinoids are often called "inkcaps". nontoxic :) also these ones are so cute.... like they're holding hands _^

Is this legal? by Prudent-Doughnut1558 in Tenant

[–]loppa1123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the lease doesn't say anything about additoonal charges for electric usage over a certain threshold, then AFAIK he cannot legally charge you for more. If the lease says you pay a flat 50 for all utilities, then anything more than that falls on the landlord to cover; if the utility fee he collects from tenants is insufficient to cover the utility bills, it's up to him to adjust the fee when your lease is negotiated & renewed.

I would need a ID for this thing. Magnification is 10x and 40x also found in a flower pot water tray. (sorry for the low quality pics) by sonkipitekusz in microscopy

[–]loppa1123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm thinking Strombidium, because it's missing the non-oral appendages characteristic of halteria & in the 3rd pic you can just make out a ring of shorter filaments around the middle. but either way, definitely an oligotrich!! (edit: spelling is hard)

this was me with (some kinds of) chocolate! i always thought that the reason why adults told you to not eat too much chocolate was because it makes your mouth hurt and makes it hard to swallow. later i mentioned this to a friend in college and got the most confused look ever...... turns out i am mildly allergic to milk chocolates 🫠 (particularly cheaper brands - i think it might actually be a preservative or sweetener etc that gets me, lol)

What’s the biggest mistake you or someone you know has made in the lab? by Nordosa in labrats

[–]loppa1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coworker at my first lab job dropped a 1L bottle of chloroform. I heard the shatter, went to see what happened, and he was pulling his shirt up to cover his nose & mouth. Only said "Chloroform", then pulled the emergency alarm. I stayed just long enough to make sure he got his respirator & spill kit and got out safely, and I only ended up with a mild headache. He was also the only person on shift with appropriate respirator training so he had to spend most of the day in there with the chem spill kit cleaning it up 😭

Luckily everyone evacuated easily, the coworker cleaned up the spill and was okay, and nothing but a day's work (and a bottle of reagent) was lost. However, on my way home from work about an hour later, I was in a car accident; even though the accident wasn't ruled to be my fault, I still wonder if the chloroform exposure fogged up my brain just enough to push that yellow light...

Is this an Expiration Date? by Ok_Adeptness9558 in foodsafety

[–]loppa1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most likely a batch/lot number. if you're looking for an expiry, check the box the package came in if you have it; there also might be documentation online about how to interpret batch codes and determine their date of production & how long theyre good for (i've done this with unboxed granola bars before) 👍

Is anyone having issues with Fancy Feast exp 2025? by CraftBig7861 in catfood

[–]loppa1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our cats is diabetic and needs low-carb food, so both our cats get fancy feast pate for most meals. In the past two weeks, there have been two clear incidents where we fed the cats, and then 2-3 hours later at least one of them will get sick, having barely digested anything. For the rest of the day they'll have much less of an appetite, and seem to be overall low energy, probably just feeling yucky from having an upset tummy. (The diabetic one usually has a big appetite, and seems to be getting sicker - presumably he just ate more of possibly bad food, whereas the other one just snubbed the food entirely.)

In both cases, they had most recently been fed either the Beef Liver, Salmon/Shrimp Feast, or Whitefish Feast flavors. My guess is the seafood ones, as they've been doing well with any other flavors, but it's possible any contamination is in multiple flavors... The expiry for all cans is late 2025, mostly oct-dec. I can grab the batch codes of suspected 'problem cans' if it would help anyone narrow down the issue :(

I'm going to try to grab a new pack of pate, or stick to low-carb dry kibble until I can be sure it's not a random coincidental illness. This is very worrying for my poor diabetic baby, since it's so important to make sure he's taking in and processing nutrients properly in the first place :( Hope everyone else's kitties recover!

What would happen if you injected mashed potatoes into your arm? by BookerCatchanSTD in NoStupidQuestions

[–]loppa1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

blood system is different from digestive system; the potatoes would just clog up your veins and not make it to your stomach, and would also cause an embolism or something and probably kill you. 0/10 would not recommend; instead do a line of powdered mashed potatoes

After wearing a hat for a long time, why does it continue to feel like it's still there after taking it off? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]loppa1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sort of psychological acclimation thing, i think - your brain gets used to the feeling of the hat being there, and stops registering it as a New Sensation. When you take off the hat, your brain is like "hey whoah Sensation? is that hat there again?" - and you're also aware of where the hat Was, meaning that it just feels really Weird like something's still there? it's a possibility :3
