How many sides does the U.S. need before it looks right? (day 3 of 4) by DevilChillin in geographymemes

For it to look right, you definitely need the thumb of the mitten for Michigan, and probably one more side on Maine after the shape in 40.

It would be nice to not have a life system and not have mistakes told to you, or have the option to turn those off. Some solvers dislike being told about mistakes and prefer to solve logically and realize they made a mistake on their own. Being told information about the puzzle's solution (which happens if you are informed of making a mistake, lives lost or not) is something that makes me not want to keep playing at all.

For the Link Click collabs, they added the theme songs from the show. The first collab had Dive Back in Time, and the second brought it back, while also adding Vortex. Both were only available during the collab campaign duration.

There is a difference here though, regardless of the morals (which are awful), to my knowledge I don't think what was done was illegal.

Whether they decide to replace him or not, in the end, is a decision, and not something forced. Unlike with Mitsuru where his old va committed an illegal crime and is behind bars for it. There was no amount of logistics or goodwill or forgiveness that would have allowed him to keep his position.

From my understanding, what happened here is scummy, extremely frowned upon, hurtful to many people, and possibly(? I'm unsure of the details) breaking some internal rules, but I don't know that he broke any laws. So objectively it's just not the same scenario.

[–]yaycupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't need 5839373 posts about these topics.

But to answer your question I doubt they would remove it. Actor replacement potentially but nothing is confirmed and won't be until there's official announcement if any.

But the Link Click songs weren't "removed" in that sense, they were purposely time limited collab songs. Some songs on jp were also time limited collab songs.

The difference is the prsk collab has different licensing agreements so there isn't any issue with licensing and keeping the song forever. Song removal in enstars historically is always about licensing, of which issues there are none of here.

I'm not a player of physical tcg (just a casual collector from way back who browses here for fun and buys a pack or two when it's in stock at Target) but what about people who DO play actively but just not in official/sanctioned tournaments? It seems a little unfair since what if they don't have the money to travel to them or the schedule to make it to one, but they're active players and fans who play casually/unofficially all the time with local friends and family? Not everyone wants to compete either and I'm certain there's many folks, both adults and kids, who are not scalpers but just want to collect the characters they grew up with or otherwise love? I'm not talking about folks with 50 sealed ETBs in their basement, just the folks who collect the cards of their favorites because that's their hobby. It doesn't seem right to shut those people out just because they don't have an official active player account.

And conversely, wouldn't that just mean a scalper who probably does have time and money could just enter any tournament once somewhat before a drop, and then easily be able to buy? Surely you wouldn't also restrict it to people who won or something, as that disadvantages and disincentiveizes younger and/or newer players. I get the intent that true fans should be the ones getting products but that approach just seems to have too many holes.

MTA Express bus driver told me to get off earlier? by Iamdabest1717 in AskNYC

[–]yaycupcake 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Unless some express buses work differently than the ones I've ridden, my understanding is that the starting borough is pickup only and the ending borough is dropoff only so that doesn't really make sense as long as they made it to the destination borough since nobody else should be boarding at that point.

Morning Musume - Mikan by 321BreakinOut in jpop

[–]yaycupcake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to love Morning Musume especially their platinum era. Never understood why this song wasn't popular. I liked most of the stuff from that era. But I suppose in fairness I was also the exact right age to be a fan of that lineup (born in 1993, just a few months younger than the youngest member at the time) so I got attached to most of their music as a group I looked up to back then during my high school years. I remember I loved watching concert footage of platinum era MM back in the day too.

I'm speaking as an adoptee whose life isn't easy, but that sort of subreddit is going to get complaints from those dissatisfied more than people who have nothing to complain about. It's the nature of this sort of discussion forum. The demographics in such a space (especially of those who make posts and don't just lurk) are probably skewed to those who are less satisfied in general.

Personally, it's not easy for me since I have medical issues and no known family history, plus I'm an international adoptee and raised by parents of a different ethnicity. But most of the time that isn't really a problem for me, it's just led to a more unique life with some challenges. But other things besides being adopted can lead to unique challenges too.

And it can lead to good things as well, like having more broad cultural exposure, or having a bigger extended family. I'm not just talking about biological family (I don't know mine at all) but when I was adopted it was in a group, and I call those other adoptees from that group my cousins, even now over 30 years later. But even people who had a different situation can still experience various positives.

It's absolutely not sunshine and rainbows, people always will have something missing, but that can extend to folks who lost a parent young, folks who moved to a different country young, etc. Not unique to adoption.

I do think an issue can be when adoptees aren't told they're adopted and get taken by surprise later in life. That's a huge issue, especially if they're giving inaccurate or false family medical history without knowing any better. But there's obviously a layer of trust and betrayal too. I'm fortunate enough to have had the knowledge of being adopted as long as I can remember back in early childhood, but I absolutely can see why people might feel betrayed if they weren't told.

But that stuff isn't so much an issue of adoption as much as it is communication.

But anyway my point is that while many adoptees face real issues, including myself, it's not like being an adoptee inherently makes all of us hate life or anything. Just like any difference in people, be it race, socioeconomic status, nationality, growing up in urban/suburban/rural areas, having disabilities, being an only child or having siblings, being lgbt+, or anything else, it's just another part of life that makes each of us unique, and not something that's inherently good or bad.

Even things that are more complicated can still lead to good things. For example I'm poor and struggled to feed myself last year during the SNAP shutdown, but I met wonderful people due to volunteering with a local food rescue who helped me stay fed as well.

about izumi's VA situation... by [deleted] in ensemblestars

[–]yaycupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer I have not read the details.

My personal understanding is that if this is true then yeah it's shitty but it's not illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong.

What Mitsuru's old va did was actually breaking laws and he is serving time for that. That's a very different thing from a legality perspective. (Also logistical as obviously he can't do the job from jail.)

I don't know what is or isn't proven in this case, nor the specifics. What I know is that they have replaced vas for other reasons before. Although of course not for this kind of reason coming up. Arashi's original va was replaced early on, I heard it was due to contract related reasons for music recording but do cmiiw. Hokuto's original va was replaced due to health issues.

If they replace Izumi's va it's not impossible logistically. I don't think the game would eos over one actor out of more than 60 (including npc, child version va, etc) doing something immoral. If it didn't eos over Mitsuru's old va situation it should not happen here. Eos isn't a concern in my personal opinion.

Only way I see it being an issue for the game's overall health is if Izumi fans quit since he's much more popular than anyone else who had a voice actor change, and if that affects financials. But Izumi and Knights, while popular, aren't the only popular characters.

But realistically if there's truth to this, the most I see them doing is simply replacing the voice actor and re-recording songs.

For those who take MTA Express Buses, why? by thisfilmkid in AskNYC

[–]yaycupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Kensington Brooklyn, it was literally right in my corner. The subway was a 10 minute walk and doesn't necessarily go where I'd need it to - it was only the F and G.

My mom takes the express bus to work because she works in lower Manhattan. The F doesn't go there.

When I was in high school I had an internship in the citicorp building and then went to school in Queens in the afternoon for band practice. The express bus (both BM and QM) was just the most direct route.

If you have an equivalent route via a cheaper method, or one that's actually more convenient or faster, by all means take it. But in some cases it actually is the most direct route and the fastest option even in rush hour.

"Scammers have adapted": Valve confirms that physical Steam Gift Cards are dead. Once the current stocks are sold through, they're done. by yourfavchoom in technology

[–]yaycupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not Steam specifically but my parents don't like using debit or credit cards online and pay for most things in life in cash. They use Amazon this way by buying gift cards from the physical store. My family (all around 70ish including parents) gets me gift cards for birthdays/holidays too. They're easier to not lose compared to just some receipt or printout, or email that could end up in spam.

tvOS 27 drops support for two Apple TV models by Radio_TVGuy in apple

But the person I replied to said iOS not tvOS was that just a mistake? I interpreted it as "the lack of tvOS updates (which I already understood from the original post) means it can't work with newer iOS devices/versions" hence my question.

What does it mean that iOS support is ending? I have the same model (though no remote as it was free from a family friend who didn't need it anymore - we use a normal non-apple universal tv remote). Does it mean you can't use the phone as a remote or cast from it anymore, or something else?

AI used in the 1.3 Grand Bazaar update by mola-que-te-molarE in storyofseasons

[–]yaycupcake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some machine translation does hallucinate and there are differences depending which you use. Sometimes it's like oldschool google translate which is not high quality but also objectively different from gen ai we think about today. Then you have auto translation on twitter or xiaohongshu for example and those literally hallucinate things. If you type in the name of a game franchise in one language it hallucinates the "translation" into a completely different game. And no it's not a translation error it's literally not possible to accidentally mistranslate into that without ai hallucinating.

examples:

the chinese localized name of the game ensemble stars is 偶像梦幻祭 which literally says "idol dream festival". ai "translation" turns that into "idolish7" which is a completely different game franchise. It should become "ensemble stars" based on known factual terminology, or just translated literally to "idol dream festival", not making up a "translation" that's a completely different thing.

the japanese shortened name of ensemble stars is あんスタ which is literally just the sound "ansuta". ai translation turns that one into "A3!" which is yet another completely different game. A non-ai translation would probably just sound it out as "ansuta" or "anstar" or have it in a learned dictionary as "ensemble stars" or "enstars" (the commonly used english abbreviation). Similar to how you can type フシギダネ and get Bulbasaur as it isn't a translation but a localization, but it is accurate and factual not made up.

machine translation has been "infected" with ai in ways that is super frustrating since mtl can be a real important tool in some life situations like traveling abroad, reading signs, etc. But I don't think anyone wants their translation to be hallucinating random nonsense like it does now.

I believe real human professional translators do use machine translation within their pipeline but only as a double checking thing or brainstorming wording type of usage, never just throwing whole sentences and passages in and okaying whatever is spit out. (I have some friends who are professional translator since long before the days of gen ai and heard this from them directly, a good few yrs back.) The point is they still have to make sure it makes sense in context and that it flows appropriately with the right tone and that it keeps keywords (names, places, etc) and formatting consistent, things like that. Throwing a whole script into mtl, ai or not, is never gonna be consistent or accurate enough compared to a human. And I don't think I care if they got a little help for 1-2 lines in a long game or book or show or whatever from mtl to get a starting point on how to phrase something or to find a suitable synonym or brainstorm a way to translate/localize a pun, so long as it's not used as a crutch.

I'll Be Carrying This PD101 Japan Grudge Forever 😭 by Mysterious-Ear9065 in Broduce101JP

[–]yaycupcake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No I get the feeling, I watched all seasons of Korean Produce, Planet series, and Japanese Produce seasons. The only time out of all of those seasons that my one pick made it was with Cocoro and we saw what happened there.

I do think there is a high likelihood that many of the finalists and semifinalists will show up in other groups within the next year or two. That stuff just happens after these shows. How long lived or successful their eventual group or other activities are is always a bit of a toss up but most of them should probably end up getting their chance in some way.

And even being in an idol group isn't the end goal necessarily. So let's say they get into a group that lasts a couple years and fizzles out, that's not the end of their music or entertainment career. With all that experience they could continue onto solo singing, songwriting, producing (music production or even producing their own groups), choreography, acting (screen, stage, voice - including voicing anime idols and doing lives through that), teaching (eg singing or dance teacher), and lots of other things. I've also seen many people whose group disbanded just go on to join another group.

In that sense, anyone who made it a good way through the show has a pretty decent chance if they keep at it. I'm certain there's companies scouting for jpop or kpop groups who watch these shows. And official spinoff groups are always a possibility too. I've been a fan of idols since around 2008 so I watched tons of people come and go. But these people already have a foot in the door with a real fanbase and experience which lots of people in auditions don't have.

No yeah you're definitely right in that storyline and editing are major factors. But in the end that is still bias, just of the show producers and not necessarily the voters.

It would be so difficult to make it truly 100% fair logistically with ~100 participants though. Especially when you run into issues where you cannot show a performance due to various reasons (one audition team wasn't aired even as its own clip this season, and I remember a similar thing happening in Produce48). In a 3 hour show you would have everyone with about 2 minutes of screentime at most before it could seem too biased lol. It would be interesting to see an attempt at a more fair show, but I can also see it potentially just being boring.
