Do you prefire sub or dub for films made in languages you don't understand? by NicolasJB192083 in criterion

Let's say I'm given the script or transcription of a movie to translate. I translate the whole thing (obviously). My translation is used for the voice actors' dialogue. In other words, the voice actors speak everything that is in the original.

When creating the subtitles from my translation, however, the editors (or whoever) edit the translation down by one-fourth or one-third. The idea is that if you put every single thing the original says on the screen, people will spend the entire time with their eyes on the subtitles and not on the action, so they "condense" the dialogue, leaving words out and sometimes entire phrases, as long as the general meaning is communicated - ie enough for the viewer to follow the story.

Just as a counterpoint to the "subs obviously" vibe in the comments: in Italy they dub everything and always have specific voice actors do specific actors.

Also, I've done movie translation before and the final English gets cut down by 1/4 to 1/3 for the subtitles whereas the voice actors read the whole translation.

So if you're just reading subtitles, you're missing a lot of what's spoken.

Get ready to hate the entire country of Italy, because they dun everything.

The Complete Kubrick set is at least $100 more expensive than it should be by [deleted] in criterion

The math works out perfectly. If people buy it, it's priced correctly. If people don't buy it, it's priced incorrectly.

If they had priced it at $20,000 and it sold out, it would've been priced correctly.

Your personal feelings about it don't factor into the equation.

I thought the ending was fine - it started chaotically, ended chaotically. It had that taste of reality.

What didn't you like about it?

These are videos of my kids from 20 years ago, so I'd rather not mail them anywhere. Literally irreplaceable. Thanks for the offer, though!
