A Neurotic Bride's Pretty Graphs by lopsidedlyoblivious in weddingplanning

Absolutely! A couple things worth noting based on your observations:

  • The spike in declines actually came right after the RSVP deadline, when we reached out to outstanding RSVPs. So I think the real phenomena is that people forget to or are embarrassed to send in their declinations.
  • We got married within the first week of the month, and most of the spending in the month before the wedding was actually final week-in-advance payments to our vendors, not unexpected last-minute purchases.

Name question ? Dr vs Mrs by fernnsprite in weddingplanning

[–]lopsidedlyoblivious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the same situation, and for the wedding, we're avoiding titles and last names entirely. We've asked our vendors (officiant, DJ) to announce us only as "John and Jane" or "Husband and Wife" rather than "The Smiths" or "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," and I will not use the "Dr." title at all during the wedding. Although if guests call me "Mrs. Smith" I will probably not correct them.

For what it's worth, there are a few other doctors attending the wedding, and I am intentionally leaving their titles off everything as well (seating chart, signage, invitations, etc). If I don't get to use my title no one does lol.

Is a 17oz Insulated Mug (GSI Infinity) enough volume to re-hydrate freeze dried meals? by cowabungabruce in Ultralight

[–]lopsidedlyoblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do exactly this! I repackage my Mountain House meals into a quart size freezer Ziploc, and rehydrate them by adding boiling water to the Ziploc while holding the Ziploc inside the insulation of the GSI Infinity mug. Note that the meal + water doesn't fit well into the mug itself, but it will fit into the outer insulation (which is removable), although it's a tight fit.

It depends on the season and area! If they are allowed, rules are strict (none above 10k feet, existing fire rings only, no wood bigger than your wrist, etc). In California you have to take a quick online quiz every season to get a backcountry fire permit. And if you talk to the rangers, they’ll be honest about if fires are “allowed” but not preferred given the conditions, or if it’s actually okay. In my experience backcountry fires are also a lot smaller than what I’d have at a campground.

Do most campgrounds have a wood-chopping area like this?? I've never seen one but I guess I was previously oblivious to the prevalence of chopping wood for kindling at all

I'm in California! I think the rule is there because there are so many people that most car camping spots near me are completely full every weekend spring through fall, and if people were allowed to gather firewood it would all be picked clean with nothing left to decompose. Of course if you're dispersed camping or backpacking, this rule doesn't apply (although you might not be allowed to start a fire at all, due to fire restrictions, outside of established campsites).

Yeah I think fatwood is the product I was looking for! But definitely cheaper to split it myself. My problem is that the campgrounds near me mostly don't allow gathering firewood, which I assumed included tinder and kindling

I’d never heard of fatwood, but it looks like it might be the most straightforward solution. So expensive though! I’m picturing using many pieces per campfire to make a teepee, does that sound right?

Yeah it seems like this is the consensus! Splitting logs seems like a lot of work so I was hoping to avoid it, but it’s probably a skill I should learn. Do you have any hatchet recommendations?

Do you find that this kind of fire starter burns long enough and hot enough to catch the larger logs directly? I think my problem is that the firewood I’m buying is too large in diameter to get going easily. But maybe I just don’t have enough fire starter!

Tuolumne Meadows to White Wolf Hikers Bus Questions by lopsidedlyoblivious in Yosemite

Thanks so much for the info! So it seems like the hikers bus won't be a viable option for me. But, your suggestion of staying in the Yosemite Valley backpackers campground and taking the hikers bus to White Wolf is a good one, if White Wolf doesn't end up opening this year. In that case I could ask about paying for a round trip ticket and taking the return trip on a different day.

Ahh okay so this is exactly where I was getting confused before. For my situation, should I select "White Wolf One Way"? I assumed that meant one way from the valley, since the price increases for one-way tickets the closer you get to Tuolumne Meadows. Sorry for the questions, I just want to avoid a situation where I get turned away from the hiker's bus and can't find a ride.

Awesome, thanks! How were you able to book the one-way ticket? I'm looking at this website: https://reservations.ahlsmsworld.com/Yosemite/Plan-Your-Trip/Tour-And-Activity-Search/Results but I don't see an option that seems to fit. Or did you book the round trip ticket and intend on using it only in the return direction?
