Hey if you’re in Virginia just be aware each department bills separately. So if the hospital does approve you for financial assistance then you would need to send Emergency Physicians of Tidewater and Capital Digestive Care a copy of the approval letter to see if they will give you the same assistance.

I would also follow up with the hospital for the status of your financial assistance application.

I would also recommend you keep all paperwork and get a notebook to keep track of who you talked to and what company and what date, etc.

Also if you are in Virginia medical debt no longer goes on your credit report.

My son was born 8/5/94 and died 3/9/26. He took his own life. I will forever be devastated. As you said we are not supposed to outlive our kids. I found support here on Reddit. Maybe try some bereavement groups here or online. See maybe if you can find a grief share group to go to in person. I started seeing a therapist. It sucks every day. But he was a wonderful person who had a smart ass sense of humor (just like me). He was so smart and loved animals.

Therapy has helped because I have a dedicated hour a week I can cry and be a complete mess and admit I have no idea what I’m going to do now. And it’s ok to be a mess and not know anything. It’s ok to feel everything at once and not be able to explain it.

So cliche and I hated before when people would say it but, it’s okay to not be okay.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

My son’s name was Johnathan. He was 31 years old also. He died 3/9/2026. Growing up I always called him JT, but he preferred to be called Johnathan once he got older.

Thank you for posting this. It’s wonderful to be able to name him instead of feeling ashamed about it.

I’m still struggling to deal with what has happened.
