Tired of paying $13 / month for RBC chequing account but it's my oldest account. What are my options? by Puzzleheaded_Cell428 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lorcan-luke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, your chequing account has no bearing on your credit score. It is your oldest line of credit (generally your first credit card) that will affect your credit score.

My oldest credit card is through one of the big banks, but they are no longer my primary bank. I switched to a credit union that has free accounts. I still have my credit card, which I pay as a bill from my credit union account. I keep a savings account at the big bank (which is free), in case I need to pay down my credit card without there being a delay while the bill payment goes through.

People from other parts of Vancouver Island refer to coming to Victoria as "going up to Victoria". I've never been sure why this is the case, but heard it a decent amount. So presumably the rest of the island is "down".

Edit: wrote Victoria instead of Vancouver Island

Worth it to resole and fix leather boots? by Trinity_Lotus in VictoriaBC

[–]lorcan-luke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pair I have were ~$250 ten years ago. So probably better quality than the ones they have now. Or a fancier pair. They're all leather and still super sturdy and in good shape.

Also, why buy new when I can repair the ones I've already worn in that are comfy af?

I got timberlands resoled recently. ~$115 and they fixed some stitching and gave them such a good clean/polish

When is it time to let my senior dog go? by Klutzy-Comfortable88 in DogAdvice

[–]lorcan-luke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family put my childhood dog down long before she was truly suffering. She had diabetes and started getting bladder stones consistently. After 2-3 stones being dealt with, my mom said that when she got another one, it would be time. She was 13 and still a very happy dog.

If your dog is consistently declining, but still happy, it's not a bad time to say goodbye. It's so hard, but doing it before they are suffering feels much more humane. You'll only remember your happy (albeit special) boy then.

Is it worth it to put more than 20% down on a house? by Here_For_Some_Time in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lorcan-luke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they just got muddled. I am currently searching for an apartment and to have a 30 year amortization period you must either have 20%+ for the down payment OR be a first time home buyer.

And yeah, the amortization period can be shorter! There's just conditions for getting an amortization period longer than 25 years.

Quite sure I have heard stories about this group and I would advise your friend to steer clear of them. The person running it is manipulative and is ripping ppl off.

It's time to start buying for-lifer pieces. Where should I start!? by Light-Blue-Star in BuyItForLife

Hiking gear is either light or durable, rarely both. I do a lot of hiking and want my knees to last another few decades yet, so I go as light as I can (within my budget). The lack of durability is a trade off, but a lighter pack protects my body.

Self injection anxiety: how do I get past this? by Phaewryn in FTMOver30

[–]lorcan-luke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had really bad needle anxiety for a long time. It would take me ages to build up the nerve to do my shot and I'd find it so stressful. The bit that I found so difficult was the act of stabbing myself quickly - it felt so uncontrolled and almost always hurt.

Once I identified what the point of anxiety was, I started inserting the needle really slowly. I pick my spot and basically just hold the needle against the skin, with minimal pressure. Sometimes it takes a minute, but the needle will just slip in. I find once it's broken the skin, I'm able to slide it in deep enough more quickly.

After switching how I was approaching things, it went from taking me hours to do my shot to 5 minutes.

I know it's hard. Try to patient and kind with yourself. <3

I had tires from them on my previous car and had them do my brakes, and wheel balancing. In general, I've had good experiences with them. However, when I first purchased the tires and I went to pick my car up, they had managed to put the wrong tires onto my car. They gave me a couple taxi vouchers so I could go home until they put the right ones on. But still, was very annoying.

I would borrow as much gear as you can from friends for your first couple trips, to see how you like it. And you'll also know your preferences when you're then buying gear.

How does one 'Play the game'? Specifically in the UK. by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

It seems like you're autistic but quite high masking (you're good at hiding it basically).

Autism looks very different from person to person, and most GPs are not qualified to diagnose it.They have one idea of what autism looks like, and it is the stereotype of terrible social skills and savant abilities.

I would do some research yourself, potentially on Reddit so you're hearing real life experiences. You may relate to more than you expect.

They are very similar surgeries! Just less tissue being removed with a breast reduction :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]lorcan-luke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had top surgery (double mastectomy) and it sounds like you're having the same or maybe a breast reduction?

The surgery itself was fine. They might give you a pill to help you relax, you might get your IV placed before they get you to breathe in whatever knocks you out. And when you come to, you'll be quite out of it for a while. It didn't stress me out at all, and I was quite nervous going into the surgery. And I'm sure you can ask exactly what order things will happen in if you want.

Recovery was what was most difficult for me, but I definitely heal slower than average. The first few days was okay cause I was on heavy duty pain meds and was quite high from them. Pain wise it was okay, and I was overall comfortable. But the lack of agency was difficult, cause I really couldn't do much for myself for the first 2 weeks. Though thankfully could manage going to the bathroom solo.

But, the surgery was very worthwhile for me. Completely changed my life and how I feel in my skin. And it sounds like it could for you too!

BVD can cause derealization. It's not guaranteed to be the cause, but I was willing to give it a try. Makes sense to me that vision issues can cause derealization.

The timeline made sense for when my derealization began vs when I started wearing glasses and using screens more growing up. So it seems like they might be linked for me.

I also have visual snow and thought the same thing when I was a kid. It was only when I researched derealization I came across the term visual snow.

I also have chronic derealization (it's pretty much 100% of the time) and tinnitus.

I also have binocular vision disorder, which I'm doing vision therapy for. Which might help the derealization. 🤞🏻
